As someone who cares about sports (a lot), did anyone else get their season tickets for 2023 yesterday?
I thought they're going in waves and yesterday was just the first?Black02AltimaSE wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021As someone who cares about sports (a lot), did anyone else get their season tickets for 2023 yesterday?
Count out Centene as a stadium naming sponsor

Just the Supporter Section for now. So if you placed your deposit for General Reserve or Premium, those won't happen for a while.
I doubt they do both but it isn’t like they couldn’t afford a stadium and jerseyNHampton wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021Count out Centene as a stadium naming sponsor

I guess they didn't get the memo the incoming Charlotte MLS team will be playing in the Carolina Panthers football stadium.jshank83 wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021I doubt they do both but it isn’t like they couldn’t afford a stadium and jerseyNHampton wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021Count out Centene as a stadium naming sponsor

They got the memo, that’s why it will just be called “Centene Field at the Bank of America Stadium” during soccer games and BOA stadium for all other events. This is primarily a kit sponsorship.
Are you joking or serious?dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021They got the memo, that’s why it will just be called “Centene Field at the Bank of America Stadium” during soccer games and BOA stadium for all other events. This is primarily a kit sponsorship.
I noticed the Panthers went back to turf. Is that connected to the soccer coming in?

It's also possible that WellCare had promised to sponsor at some level before being acquired by Centene. So Centene just decided to follow through using the main corporate name.
And yes, Dennis' response is serious and accurate.

Serious. Id copy and paste the article but that’s the jest of it

As for the field turf, yes, they decided to make the switch to have a more consistent playing surface since MLS could another 30+ games a year.
I was curious and found the following:
-New England, Atlanta and Vancouver and Seattle all play on some sort of plastic because they're in football stadium
-Toronto and Cincinnati's teams plays on hybrid grass: whatever that is.
-Portland plays on plastic: not sure why.

Portland has been talking about switching back to natural grass - I believe there were talks back in 2020 about it. Not sure if it's still in the works or not.
Is it a weather/growing season thing?Laife Fulk wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021Portland has been talking about switching back to natural grass - I believe there were talks back in 2020 about it. Not sure if it's still in the works or not.
They also sponsor the "Centene Court at Chaifetz Arena". I guess they like that move.dweebe wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021Are you joking or serious?dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021They got the memo, that’s why it will just be called “Centene Field at the Bank of America Stadium” during soccer games and BOA stadium for all other events. Not 100% positive, but I believe when they installed the field turf back in 2011, it was because the field was a potential site for college football + the WPS season + MLS + lower tier soccer teams, etc etc. So just a wear and tear concern.

I'm GA (6 tickets), so waiting for my turn next year... patiently.Black02AltimaSE wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021As someone who cares about sports (a lot), did anyone else get their season tickets for 2023 yesterday?
Maybe its the last few years I've spent living outside the states but man, this is exactly what I thought. All these drone shots are depressing as hell. Missed opportunities, wasted tax money, blocks of emptiness, a Ferris Wheel overlooking nothing.......and I've been a huge proponent of MLS to STL for about 15 years......you can check my post history, I remember the magic of lighting flares at AC STL games as a 17 year old.....but now at 30, I see the enigma of an empty Dome, an underdelivered ballpark village, and now a soccer park that's attracting the same-old-same-old of demolition crews and parking garages.....and I can't but help feel extremely disillusioned. Will Saint Louis/Downtown ever learn to get the little things right?urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Oct 20, 2021i wish people cared about important stuff as much as they care about sports.

These boards confuse me sometimes.
Poster 1: "Downtown sure is dead."
Poster 2: "It was great last weekend when the Cards and Blues had home games and there was the NCAA sporty thing at the Dome. People were everywhere and the hotels were full."
Poster 3: "I wish people didn't care about sports."

I think it definitely comes off that way sometimes...
This board is very much a "critique forum" (that's the design profession as a whole) and that often lands as pessimism, but I think all of us recognize that the city is moving quickly in a positive direction.
The demos on the 1900 block of Olive were really, really unnecessary, nearsighted and generally disillusioning. But hopefully, looking back in 3-5 years, the energy on game days, increased foot traffic, new small businesses, historic redevelopments, etc... will make the project as a whole seem worthwhile. Simply replacing a giant land-wasting highway on-ramp and giving Market a road diet is a good start.RuskiSTL wrote: ↑Oct 22, 2021Maybe its the last few years I've spent living outside the states but man, this is exactly what I thought. Walked around the project yesterday - this is starting to feel really good - I have only been to 2 MLS stadiums so I cannot speak with too much authority but this project might become the gauge which by all others are measured
I don't know what's so confusing about posts 1 and 2. That was pretty much the downtown I knew when living there from 2008 to 2015. You would have some weekends when nothing was going on and it'd be totally dead. Like that episode from the 1960's Twilight Zone where the dude wakes up from a coma and finds he's the only remaining human on earth, he walks around his town with eerily empty streets. No exaggeration here, it was frequently like that. Then, you'll have other times when there's multiple events happening and it'll be swarmed with people.Black02AltimaSE wrote: ↑Oct 22, 2021These boards confuse me sometimes.

"I wish people didn't care about sports" is a misquote. His comment was actually "i wish people cared about important stuff as much as they care about sports". I interpreted that as with all the real issues we have (crime, social division, apathy about the built environment, mass marginalization of large segments of society, a pandemic, climate change, etc, etc, etc) wouldn't it be great if people put some of the energy, enthusiasm and resources people put into sports into things that might have more positive impacts in the world they live in. I love a good football game, but I'm totally onboard with that sentiment.
Agree, pointing things out that you feel need attention can sound pessimistic (especially depending on how you read it), but I think generally most people here have a love for the city and want to see it succeed.pattimagee wrote: ↑Oct 22, 2021I think it definitely comes off that way sometimes...This board is very much a "critique forum" (that's the design profession as a whole) and that often lands as pessimism
Well, I think it's more somewhere between moving one step forward or one step back with it being highly debatable where it actually is in that spectrum. Just my opinion. Again, want to see it succeed, but also want to be realistic.pattimagee wrote:but I think all of us recognize that the city is moving quickly in a positive direction.

Agreed... I guess I'm looking from the lens that I joined this forum in 2015, and started following NextSTL in... (smh I'm getting old...) 2012. And momentum back then compared to now... and from an investment perspective... things are much more active.OnTheEdge wrote: ↑Oct 22, 2021Agree, pointing things out that you feel need attention can sound pessimistic (especially depending on how you read it), but I think generally most people here have a love for the city and want to see it succeed.pattimagee wrote: ↑Oct 22, 2021I think it definitely comes off that way sometimes...This board is very much a "critique forum" (that's the design profession as a whole) and that often lands as pessimism
