As a former resident, you know how Chicago deals with it, or I should say how they used to deal with it.

And finally as a downtown resident who is on the downtown streets at all times of day and night, I don’t know what you want me to say but the reality is that it’s safe here.   Idiots getting into an argument and settling it with guns isn’t a downtown issue, it happens everywhere and it happens much less frequently in downtown but of course all the news stations do a big circle jerk around it.    Downtown had about 340 crimes against a person in 2019 or less then one each day and each day for 150,000-175,000 people pass through downtown between residents, workers, tourists, conventions, ballgames, concerts ect, so you have a 1 in 175,000 chance of being a victim of a crime against a person, covid has killed 1 of every 500 Americans.
Whether or not it is actually safe, if you have big employers looking to leave downtown because they think it is unsafe then that is a problem.

As you know I travel a lot and I was just in a downtown that’s seen $1.3b in development since 2016 (compared to $760m from 2010-2015) and let me tell you more about it…..this downtown that in the last few years had 3 empty buildings turned into hotels (& 2 more on way) another brand new hotel constructed, new office building, new 29 story residential tower, another new residential building about to start construction, 1000 fed gov jobs moved there, 800 tech company jobs moved into a $75m renovated building, an old mall turned into a national attraction, a 700,000 sq building is getting turned into apartment thats next to a building that was empty and now 160 apartments with a grocery store that’s next to 2 buildings that were empty and now have 100 apartments between them, a neighborhood adjacent to this downtown has opened an apartment building with 3 more on the way and they’re also getting a $400,000,000 soccer stadium….I wish this was downtown St.Louis

When you have had multiple large office buildings and hotels hit by gunfire over the past 13 months they are going to get out. Period. And not to mention the countless residential units that had bullets pierce through their windows. You have to recognize there is a problem before you can begin to fix it and grow.

Call your state legislature and tell them to take off the hand cuffs off police officers. They’ve made Missouri a Wild West and now SLMPD can’t even work in federal units or risk a $50,000 fine and a lawsuit by the offender.

The other part of the problem is - it doesn’t help the situation when the city doesn’t enforce the law and it’s own ordinances. They allow the cruisers, fast buck nightclub owners, and problem properties get away with whatever they want. Disorder and chaos become the dominate theme because either it’s not in the leaders best interest politically or the problem is too complex for them to fix and people run for the hills.

Does Clayton have 25% poverty with a stable of drug dealers who can walk around with guns and not be stopped by police?     How are you going to blame a nightclub over for anything, aren’t you right wingers all about personal responsibility, nightclubs owners don’t make other people shoot people

The DOJ, the police chief, the police officers (the 25% that still give a damn, rest of the clowns should all be fired including all the worthless detectives) all say Missouri’s new law banning enforcement of federal gun laws is causing them issues, a criminal has already used a law to sue to get off

All this said, sad to hear Coatar doesn't give a sh*t about Downtown.  I agree that Downtown/Downtown West needs to be under one unified ward.  It's stupid.

Thanks man! Can’t believe this… I’m from Chicago and Humboldt Park for that matter! But you don’t hear this in Chicago believe it or not… There’s a shooting in a business and next day is closed!

Not sure they can be held liable for what people do in a parking lot that’s not theirs.  Nobody can bring a gun inside the restaurant.  What happens outside of it isn’t their issue.   Closest thing I can think of is when a bar servers someone already drunk and they get in a fatal accident that kills someone and the family sues the bar for serving the drunk but reign isn’t handing out guns to people on the way out

Oh man, I'm listening to the July 2021 Town Hall right now (link here).  I'm 35 minutes in and this is troubling.  I mean, I knew DT had challenges, but yikes....  Specifically Brad Waldrop's comments starting around the 30 minute mark.  I don't know Brad personally, but I'm vaguely aware of his longtime residency and work in downtown, and put stock in what he's saying.  With the issues he's speaking of, I don't know how you can expect any reputable Wash Ave business owner to put up with this.

He lives in Clayton, his manages his parents parking lots in downtown. He’s parking lots are part of the problem. He refuses to staff them because “it would ruin is business”.

IANAL, but if a confrontation or fight begins inside an establishment and extends outside of the establishment, is there not some liability towards where the fight started? Of course there would have to be a point at which liability would end. That might be a slippery slope though.

Has there been an instance where patrons have gone to “get their guns” and attempt murder after a confrontation around wheelhouse? Much less twice in a week?
