god, tapatalk is awful. the damn "quote" and "edit" buttons never show up...
anyway, i doubt standalone starbucks are built to withstand more than a strong breeze. good riddance, though. now build the damn mixed use building that should have been built there in the first place. (yeah, i know the starbucks will just be repaired.)A stolen truck crashed against the Starbucks on Sidney and Grand, which is now closed for the time being. Someone on Nextdoor was saying that the building suffered serious structural damage but it doesn't look like it from the outside.
I have this problem constantly too...primarily when I'm on my phone, but sometimes when I'm on my computer as well.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Dec 14, 2020god, tapatalk is awful. the damn "quote" and "edit" buttons never show up...

^ i don't have the problem on my iPhone (an old SE). but it happens on both my iMac and my Linux laptop. not sure if it's browser-related but I use Firefox. oddly, you can sometimes get the buttons to reappear by taking a different link-route to the post that you want to quote or edit (like i did just now).

Usually refreshing the page seems to fix the buttons not appearing for me.

Has anyone see a tally of accidents this year? It seems to me like there were significantly more accidents this year but it could just be my perception.
The article OnTheEdge posted a few up has numbers on deaths. Don't have crash numbers handy.

Someone ran a stop sign a couple of nights ago on Old North, killing two people in the other car. The driver got out of their car and ran away.
While not real noteworthy alone, this knocked-down bollard at the Branch Street entrance to the Riverfront Trail is indicative of the kinds of things you see daily just walking and biking around the city.
You cannot walk a few blocks without seeing some fresh evidence of a runaway car.
Then most of this stuff either never gets fixed or takes a months or years, adding to the feeling that we live in a decaying city.
Like that barrier near the cathedral at the arch that's been demolished and unrepaired for more than six months.

The Year of Driving Less—but More Dangerously
Total traffic deaths fell during pandemic lockdowns. But fatalities per mile traveled rose, due to faster driving, fewer cops, and more drug use.

^Oddly, the single worst offender in my personal circle of acquaintances is a gent of about seventy. Who drives a large truck to carry a camera. (He has other uses for it, but seems to drive the truck to the exclusion of all else.) Dude cannot get off his phone. Reads texts while driving. I've rarely been such a nervous passenger. I like him, but holy crud . . . put the pone down. You'd think folks who grew up with cell phones would be the worst, but nope, it's baby boomers and maybe my own generation.

If I say it once I will say it a million times. We simply have to place an emphasis on actively pulling over unlicensed or expired vehicles and vehicles with expired/stolen/non-existent temp tags. Also seeing ANY sort of traffic enforcement anywhere would be a plus. I legitimately think you have to t-bone a $75K police SUV to get a citation at this point.
When there's quite literally zero chance of enforcement of the most basic of laws, people take that as a green light (har har) to ignore more and more laws. Shocking, I know, that a non-existent feedback loop breeds insane results.

There has been some semblance of stop sign enforcement in my neighborhood, but it is very hit or miss. And likely due to a mass of complaints.
That said, I've seen cops directly behind a car with 2 year old tags sitting at a stoplight for 30 seconds and just switch lanes to hit the interstate. And I was over here sweating over my lack of a front plate.

For what it’s worth, recently I’ve noticed while working (my work takes me all over the metro area) a significant pick up in traffic stops and radar shooting. Granted this is primarily on the interstates (170, 70, 64, 270, and 44 are the ones I’ve been on lately) but within just a few hours of driving around one day last week I saw at least 3 or 4 cops shooting radar and another 5 or 6 people pulled over.
I know traffic stops plummeted during the pandemic...again like any other, my experience is anecdotal...but the pickup recently has been enough for me to notice.
