A year after opening its Chesterfield venue, Topgolf Entertainment Group this week confirmed it is considering a second location the region, and real estate sources indicate this time the company is focusing on sites in the city of St. Louis. A spokeswoman for the Dallas-based company said Topgolf is interested in expanding in the region but declined to provide any details on a potential locations. Yet several commercial real estate sources said the company has shown interest in Midtown, particularly around Compton and Chouteau avenues, and has considered land north of Chouteau that's occupied by Saint Louis University athletic fields and a pallet company, according to real estate sources. SLU acquired the property occupied by the pallet company in August for $5 million, data from real estate research firm Reonomy shows. The land sits just outside the boundaries of Midtown Redevelopment Corp., a joint effort between SLU and SSM Health that has master developer rights. A spokesperson for the university would only say it doesn't "have any information to provide at this time."
Topgolf also has scouted downtown, possibly near Chouteau's Landing, the area just south of the Gateway Arch, a source said. But Topgolf is reportedly looking for 15 acres and it's not clear whether there would be enough land around Chouteau's Landing to accommodate its needs. Topgolf facilities are commonly located in suburban locations, largely because of the space requirements. The Chesterfield location, about 25 miles west of downtown at 16851 N. Outer 40 Road, features more than 100 climate-controlled hitting bays overlooking a large outdoor field facing east, away from the afternoon sun. The entertainment complex also includes lounges, bars, private event and meeting spaces and a full-service restaurant. It's not unusual for Topgolf — with 53 locations in the U.S. and several overseas — to operate more than one facility in a metro area, though St. Louis would likely be the smallest market with multiple venues. Metro areas with multiple Topgolfs include Chicago, Denver, Houston and Phoenix.
