Stole this from Alderman French's facebook wall; for all of you who want to see a TV show set in your very own STL, but are not so much a fan of sitcoms like the new one with Cedric the Entertainer, looks like a new show's coming out that's gonna be on Syfy, and it's set thirty-five years into the future in post-apocalyptic St. Louis after some hard-fought war with Alien visitors. There's also going to be an online game running parallel, set in San Francisco. After watching the making-of video, can't wait to nerd out to this one!

P.S. Cue all the snide "Oh look, St. Louis looks even better in the future!" jokes.

Pretty amazing stuff. Why do they always think of us when they want post-apocolyptic? I guess being in the same category as SF isn't so bad. I always wonerded by more disater movies didn't include the Arch -- probably because those Hollywood types only see it from 32,000 feet and dont' know that most of the country actually drives through here eventually.

Maybe we can market our city as being post-apocolyptic now -- before it became really cool.

If you think about it, St. Louis is the PERFECT post-apocalyptic destination.

Global warming melts the bergs and submerges the coasts? You're heading to St. Louis. Nuclear fallout in major American cities? Head for the center of the country and -- hey, look at all these bluffs/caves we can live in! You've got fresh water from the Mississippi (after cleaning out the zombie remains, of course) and a natural barricade against encroaching bands of mutated nomads from the East. And summer vacations at the Lake!

Other cities have cool secondary names. The Big Apple. Big Easy. Motown.

99% of the country probably won't watch the show or know anything about what it is, but they will likely hear that Defiance is a new name for St. Louis in the series. I like it. Edgy. We should promote it.

If we promote our city as Defiance, sort of like we do with The Lou, publications may come to interview people like Alex about this city, which provides an opportunity to talk about the expanding tech, bio, restaurants, wine, parks, and trails things going on here. We can point out that there is a town in wine country near Daniel Boone's house in the metro area named Defiance, which was clearly the spark for the name here whether they admit it or not. The Arch could be a curiosity again, and we could promote the planned changes. And what better place to show that a semi-post-apocalypse could be fun and worth visiting than taking them the Cassilly City Museum.

So I am cautiously hoping that in many years after the show is off the air, I can tell people I live in Defiance, and they will know that means St. Louis.

I'll definitely be tuning in to the first few episodes. With the part-TV/part-online game combination, I don't expect it'll be a long-running series.

I do think though that the St. Louis CVC should reach out to Syfy about a series debut event here in the City. Maybe bring some of the sets/costumes/characters, roll out the red carpet, etc.

And hey -- maybe they could have it at the Cotton Belt!

By the way, it looks like nothing survived the apocalypse in downtown St. Louis except the Arch in the background and the John A. Young Federal building foreground right. Those bollards really worked!

I am just FLOORED by the fact that they haven't had any events in St. Louis yet. ComicCon would be a perfect time for them to do it, too.

Last day of voting -- or tomorrow is (it just says the competition ends April 4th) -- for the Defiance premiere event. St. Louis is currently holding down 3rd place with Atlanta nipping closely at our heels.

We already saw Atlanta mount an overnight comeback of around 50 people one night, so we need a lot of votes in these final 12-36 hours in order to solidify the position.

I really hope this show does well...very cool to see "St. Louis" featured regularly on a national program. Hopefully the CVC is in full-promotion mode and will use this as another way to draw visitors.

I was at the gym and, in quick succession, ads for DEFIANCE with the Arch showed up on two of the four TVs at the front of the room at about 5:45 PM. One TV was on CNBC and the other was on the Golf Channel. Good to see Syfy pushing this show on multiple cable outlets.

I have seen ads for this series on various networks. Syfy is promoting this hard.

Does anyone know what the numbers were looking like before the competition closed?

I seem to remember St. Louis being up roughly 35-40 or so votes this afternoon. I think we got it.

Unless Atlanta mounted a last-second push for about 45 votes, then we got it.

Now we just wait to see when it will be screened. The show premieres the 15th, so it has to be sometime within the next week and a half. I hope they pick a good theatre for it.
