I'm sure Ronnie's Drive-In still exists in the world of Defiance - where do you think the humans take their aliens on dates?

I'll die if they have the post-apocalyptic survivors continue to use TIF.
There is an article in the NYT online for those who care to look it up.

I was going to hold off 'til the Monday premiere, but I caved. 30 minutes in and it's pretty good.
Based on some reviews/interviews I've read, it looks like "our" St. Louis will play a bigger role in the series than we initially thought. Here's hoping some production is done here down the road...

Awesome show. I've seen pictures from future episodes and it looks like there will be a part (perhaps in episode 2) where they go underground and visit our St. Louis. I'm excited to see the flashbacks to our time about how/why the Votans destroyed St. Louis and the rest of the world...And why Defiance is such an important city on the world stage.
Defiance's population: 6,000
That's a huge city by the standards of the world in 2046!

And I think I saw a sign on one of the makeshift buildings that said, "IKEA Coming Soon".Gateway City wrote:Awesome show. In the previews for when they go underground to our STL, if you look close, you can still see them working on phase I of Ballpark Village.
Well, what'd you all think?
Never thought I'd have to do this on a NextSTL forum, but...

Cheesy at points? Sure. Campy? Of course -- wouldn't be cable sci-if if it wasn't. Overall though, the pilot did a pretty good job of creating a sense of place and some storylines to follow. And the characters, while played with a broad stroke in the first episode, could be fleshed out nicely...especially Nolan's story (again, spoilers).
Geographically, I know we'll recognize some glaring mistakes from "the St. Louis that was," but most viewers won't. And it'll be interesting to see if they're able to pull in much of St. Louis' past as flashbacks and actually, you know, show the City. I really hope our CVC is in contact with SyFy and Trion to encourage further involvement here. How 'bout some shots on location, SyFy?!
[Edit: And if the moderators decide this fits better in the St. Louis Movies/TV/Media thread -- which it probably does, truthfully -- feel free to move it over.]

St. Louis was buried. April 22 will be the premiere of an episode called "Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go." Looks like in a week we will get to see what happened to our city. got this screencap from a video on their Youtube channel.
(Spoilers)
The "reveal" at the end of the pilot is that the protagonist, the Nolan character, is actually an "Old St. Louis" native. I really loved how they introduced that; the sequence at the end of the episode was really awesomely done juxtaposing him looking at the arriving ships about to make first contact as a kid, and then him pondering his future in Defiance, all set to really dramatic-sounding orchestra music. Really well-done, if you can forgive how the windows in the first computer-generated arch are a tad off-center.

^ Ha. Didn't notice the off-kilter windows. Seems like an obvious thing to avoid.
It's that shot though that really frustrates me. Is it really easier/cheaper to create a digital background to superimpose behind live-action in Canada, or contract out a small production/casting team in St. Louis to shoot scenes in the "St. Louis that was" as it exists in 2013 (the year of the Ark event). It would bring an authenticity to the production that the detail-oriented television/movie fans (myself included) would appreciate. And if the former City exists in some form below the new landscape, it seems it'd be easier to shoot a bunch of B-roll and edit/manipulate the scene around it, rather than manufacturing a whole new set of panoramas digitally to drop in.
That ending was great. The music, the narration and the reveal got me excited for the show. Though my girlfriend my have been right when she astutely observed that I wouldn't have enjoyed the show nearly as much if I wasn't obsessed with St. Louis.

Let's be honest, all we really care about are the Nation League Central standings.

If the writers of this show care about appealing to St. Louisans, they will have to introduce a baseball team to the town. Or, if not baseball, some kind of alien sport similar to it. And they would of course have to wear red.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do something like that, but I don't need Cardinals baseball incorporated into the plot to be appeased as a Saint Louisan. Slippery slope of our worldview. Might as have them start asking which high school they went to on Mars, or bring up how the only cheese to survive the apocalypse is provel.Gateway City wrote:If the writers of this show care about appealing to St. Louisans, they will have to introduce a baseball team to the town. Sadly, I'd think so for much of this. Filming in STL would require permits, when superimposing images onto a screen doesn't. Plus, the absence of a film/tv tax credit can make filming cost-prohibitive when compared to "photoshopping" our skyline. Who knows, maybe we'll see shots later this season that were filmed in STL, but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't because doing so wouldn't have made business sense. Plus, I think they'd rather spend money on talent and other CGI before location filming.Kevin B wrote:Is it really easier/cheaper to create a digital background to superimpose behind live-action in Canada, or contract out a small production/casting team in St. Louis to shoot scenes in the "St. Louis that was" as it exists in 2013 (the year of the Ark event)...
Overall, I think this show's pretty cool so far. It has a Western Frontier feel to it, strong tones of self-reliance and independence. Like a mix of Deadwood and Deep Space Nine, but with the Arch and Mia Kershner. Good times.

Just as I thought...They DO go to St. Louis in next week's episode.

I liked seeing all of the container architecture in Defiance.
