^ no kidding!
jlblues wrote:Drilled pier is technically the correct term, since what Matt described above is the literal definition of the word "caisson". Personally, I would just always call them whatever the locals called them.
If I cared I would have said something already. As long as we know what we are talking about, we could call them anything we want.

I didn't mean to split hairs, just have never seen a water chamber first hand and was curious.

Still away. I will try to get down there when I get back in town and attempt to get a bit of an update. Until then, anyone have any pics or info on the progress with the foundation?
Two drill rigs on site as of today. Not sure how long the second has been there for. Will stop by tommorow for some pics, hopefully.
Meant to post about that. The second one has been there since at least Tuesday, I would assume a bit longer than that.

Went by yesterday and they were drilling the hell outa the place. Both drill-rigs working full blast the entire time I was there (hung around for about a half hour watching). Took pics but unfortunately it was my sister's camera and she can't manage to find the usb cord. Will try out my new one tommorow (supposed to be 1080 hd
). Really cool stuff. Didn't get a chance to talk to anyone about progress. Fencing off the sidewalk between the site and US Bank has really hightened the difficulty of this task.
Photo update (1/6/08)
Rebar Cages and Crane

Drill Bits (About 4' tall and 2' wide)

2 rigs now

Caisson Liners and smaller drilling rig

Completed caissons are buried and awaiting excavation

Nice view!

My wife and I just took advantage of a free night at the Mayfair Hotel and were amazed at the all=around excellent experience. The room was beautifully refurbished. It was classy and interesting in a way that big hotels almost never are. There were lots of great touches, and the service was just fine. I'd recommend the place to anyone.
Roberts Bros. have taken a lot of hits on this discussion site, but right now they're looking like a very class act to me.
We're lucky to have them around.

Were pouring another caisson last night when I drove by around 5. Easily the latest I've seen activity at the site so far.
Looks like we should be coming up on some milestones here relatively soon. Mainly the beggining of excavation and upward progress on the actual tower itself. The original projected timeline for the foundation work was 3 months, from the first day in October. That means we are now slightly passed the projected completion of the foundation. Should start to get real interesting soon!

I'm a St. Louisan, and you can pour all the caissons you want, and it still won't convince me that this building is going up. Even if it does go up I'll still try to find negative aspects to drone on about forever. If I can't find any major negative points I'll still stick to my guns and say that it'll fail to be maintained or something, and no other buildings like it will ever be built downtown. I might even complain about tax credits or something and act like I'm paying to build these damn things. I'll do my best to remain as ignorant as possible about anything East of 270. To spite the few morons I'll hear saying this is a sign of downtown's resurgence, I'll put down the city every time I get a chance at dinner parties, sporting events, and anywhere I think I'll be overheard. I may even try to get a job with my like minded buddies at the PD.
On a more serious note, this tower rocks the house. Hopefully it will go a long way to silence the people I've described above.

Until we have another World's Fair, two Olympic Games and twice the population of Chicago I fear nothing will change (for those you describe).

Do not forget we also would need a Walmart, a winning football team, a crime rate that rivals Fairbanks AK, more surface parking, more vinyl clad housing and a fulltime wrecking ball to knock down the rest of those ugly old brick and stone buildings. We could really do without that unsightly Metrolink too

a winning football team
Is that really asking for so much? We used to have one
Unless of course you count Wash U - but then apparently no one goes to the games. No one has still given me a good reason why people don't. It's the only college football in the area!
^^ just about the only school i know where both women's basketball and women's volleyball are more popular than football.
There's no reason D-III football can't be popular. Over here McKendree is popular and they're NAIA. The play that won the "Pontiac Game Changing Performance" of the year was the D-III game where the team lateralled like 16 times to win a game, and there were people camped out in the endzone on pickups for that one. And then look at powerhouse Mount Union...but that's in an entirely different league than Wash U (no offense).

Agreed. I love this project, but I noticed it doesn't seem to get as much love as Skyhouse. I like this design and location better, but maybe that's just me.
So were the problems ever corrected at the sales office? Has anyone stopped by and checked it out lately?

I agree with Steve and Matt. I'm sure Skyhouse will be great, but like Matt said, Roberts Tower is actually under construction and I prefer its location closer to the heart of downtown (just my $.02).

^^Haven't been by the sales office in a while. The only times I visited it I was pitched lofts in a totally different building
. I'm beggining to wonder if the sales office for the tower wasn't a ploy all along just to get people to hear about the lofts.

Agreed with the above. This is a great design and great location. It may even partially offset the loss of the Century.
