So I can't really enjoy the plaza? Man, you guys make it sound like the Ambassador Building was destroyed simply to create a driveway for the U.S. Bank Building.
How sad both that the tower is being delayed and how foolish it is to fight for another plaza. Alas, I wish I had known about this 6 years ago when I had a chance to talk to Danfoth... oh well. Perhaps the STLUP should make this another one of their projects...
When I think about it, this doesn't even seem like a good spot for a plaza. It would be at one of the ugliest intersections downtown. The views will be:
the back side of the OPO (not its most flattering angle)
the new garage (yech)
the Roberts brothers' lofts (ok I guess)
Renaissance garage (again, yech)
side of the American (a side not intended to be seen anyway)
proposed Roberts bros tower (who knows how that will actually turn out).
So not only are there too many of these pointless spaces downtown to begin with, but now they want to add one in a location lacking in aesthetic beauty, in other words there will be even less of an incentive to linger there. This plaza idea seems, to me, so bad on too many levels.
Unless "they" do something genuinely exceptional here--which I doubt--this plaza will be as successful as the Gateway Mall is at 15th Street.

I don't have a problem with the urban plaza. But if it's holding up construction for the Tower, that's when I have a problem. I realize that people have this obsession with a crappy little park where it's not needed, but you can't drag your feet and hold up progressive projects that will help the health of the city.

I know of Chicagoans who do the same thing. I think this behavior is less place-based and more class-based.

I think your ire is pointed in the wrong direction. Think about this...which would seem more contingent on the other-the designs of a superficial park to complete an underground parking garage, or an underground parking garage dictating the design/construction of a plaza. I think it is the latter rather than the former. The parking garage will dictate the timeline for the plaza, not vice versa.
Bottom line I understand from a friend that higher ups in city government were pretty ticked about this column, as it is the Roberts brothers who are actually holding up the process, but are trying to avoid bad press for their project. What about that empty lot is preventing them from completing soil studies, engineering and architectural processes? Why would the placement of pavers and planters dictate this? It doesn't...they are making excuses for their delayed timeline.

They could also be ticked about the plaza being royally screwed up too and just trying to blame the Robert's. I don't know the real situation, but it could be either way. In fact, it may be both.
Either way, let's get them going.

^ Yes. Whatever the reason for the delay may be, it looks like another job for STL-UP!
There's a new rendering of this project in this mornings PD Downtown Progress report insert (page 22). The Robert's name is gone, and there's more detail than the previous rendering posted on this site. Also says the start date is Fall 2006, opening Spring 2009 - cost is $62M.

Are you in the city? Because this insert isn't in my PD. I subscribe and live in S. County.

Nope... I got it in clayton

It wasn't in my paper from Carondelet, must be in the central corridor papers only.

Looks like they opened up the base area. Good move. Hope this building goes up.
This, in my opinion, is the best-looking building proposed in St. Louis in many, many years! Let's hope it gets built.
For some really, really stupid reason, those of us who actually subscribe to the Post didn't get this insert. It was only available on the street.
But, there was lots of good info, once I found one.

^the designs have been up in the air for so long i think they're still trying to finalize all the details with the city and the plaza in front. it would be foolish to try to sell a project this big without a flashy website like the park pacific.
it is quite a looker though. hopefully something equally flashy might take up some of the other empty lots in the area. hopefully.

A sales center has been opened at the corner of 9 and Locust . In addition I was eating at the Pasta House a couple of days ago. In addition the old chap who use to run a Newstand on the corner of 8 and Locust has closed.
Good signs,
Good signs,
From the Post Today:
Michael and Steven Roberts tapped sustainable-consulting firm Vertegy to assist with the development of two projects in St. Louis. The Roberts Luxury Residences, the first new residential tower in downtown St. Louis in 40 years, and the 26-house Roberts Place subdivision near the Central West End, will be designed with environmental influences that are anticipated to capture top rankings from the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Association of Home Builders.

It's developing a high-rise green building in downtown St. Louis. The 24-story Roberts Luxury Residences at the Mayfair, 411 8th Street, will be built by Alberici Living LLC, a subsidiary of Overland-based Alberici Enterprises.
The Robertses expect to break ground next month, with completion in 2008. Plans calls for 36 condominium units, including four penthouses. The starting price is $750,000. There also will be retail space, including a restaurant, and meeting space.
The condos will be equipped with an internal wireless communication system and a private garage.
