I like the angled parking also. However, the 4-5 times I've tried to park there the spots are always filled up. Each time I've had to drive around the block to find a space or to turn around and park on the south side of the street. I have a feeling all the employees are parking all day in those spots and not leaving them for the customers. I also see contractors trucks always park there ( maybe they have to...I'm not sure ). Maybe I just have bad timing... :?

It sounded like some work was going on in the retail bay next to Wicked Fresh Subs. Anyone know about any new tenants?

It's the aforementioned Comedy Club. They leased 4 connected bays.

I really should have just gone back in the thread - totally forgot about the comedy club. Thanks!

Looks like they've opened and scrapped the comedy club concept.

One of the newest businesses to pop up in the increasingly busy Tudor Building downtown is the City, a lounge that’s looking to make its mark on the nightclub scene.

“My goal was to create the hottest lounge in the city,” owner Jason Spain says. “I’m trying to create an environment that’s everything to everybody, without being specific to age or race. I want it to be the kind of spot that can turn from a neighborhood hangout to an upscale lounge, where you can feel safe and bring the party.”

Spain is trying to position the City as an out-of-St. Louis experience within St. Louis.

“I want the City to feel like you’re wrapping yourself up in a different world. I wish it could have its own ZIP code. It’s a place of its own,” he says, sounding every bit the promotions director he once was at a couple of St. Louis radio stations.

The City, with room for 300 spread throughout 3,600 square feet, boasts Top 40 music, hip-hop, reggae, jazz, blues and spoken word. Live music is coming.

The promoter sounds like he knows what he's doing, but I'm not so sure that it can be successfully run as "everything to everyone." It seems like he's trying to capture too many segments without putting enough focus on any of them. Unless it's not really "everything to everyone", which is more likely the case.

The Tudor has filled up nicely. I believe there is now just one bay unoccupied.

More on the Tudor

It is nice to see that Dwtn West is developing nicely in a recession. So I noticed that the building across from the Tudor building is almost vacant. Are there plans to renovate that building also? They are finishing the building north of the vacant building. What are the plans for that building besides apartments? I hope a new full service restaurant is in the works. :D

It's my understanding that Bob Wood - who renovated the Tudor and is renovating the building catty-corner from it - also owns the building across from the Tudor and that it will be the next to be rehabbed.

I had lunch at Everest Cafe in the Grove and was looking at their brag wall with all the reviews. (They were all from the old location on Washington Ave back in 2004.) Every single review talked about how they were located in a run down and desolate end of downtown. One review even mentioned how people made reservations but then cancelled after they saw the area.

It will be interesting to see how things will have changed in 6 years if all three buildings are renovated and doing good business.

If they think the Grove is a slum, I'm guessing they will never venture up to Crown Candy.

They didn't think the Grove was a slum. They thought Downtown West, the original location, was a scary area. Reading comprehension

If anyone thought they needed to make a reservation when Everest was on Washington...they apparently weren't familiar with their surroundings. Everest was my all time favorite restaurant in Downtown...west, east, south north. I miss them.

Alright, so our apartment search is down to The Tudor Building and Paul Brown Lofts. Anyone have any feedback about this place? As of today, this is what we are leaning toward. I would love to know if anyone lives there, or has friends who do so. This is a little off the main strip, so does anyone know of security issues? Thanks!

PostJun 10, 2010#244

I didn't know where else to post this, but I now live in the Tudor Building. I really like it a lot, but I thought that the cleaning up of the building on the opposite side of Washington needed to be noted. Our apartment manager said that Rwood wants nothing more than to get started on its rehab, and that as soon as financing goes through it will be underway. That was about two weeks ago, but this whole week there has been a small crew cleaning the place up. The old awning for Everest Cafe was removed, and they have started cleaning the molding among other things. Does anyone know a name for this project or additional info? It would be awesome to have neighbors across the street!

Initial word is that the planned re-development for this building may still be able to move forward. A set back but not a death knell.
