Perhaps paying their kids to book the acts isn't working out as expected.

I guess you have to do something to earn your allowence.

I guess this place never plans on booking anything decent?

I'm just amazed by how quickly this place died. Then again after attending the Rob Thomas concert I shouldn't have been suprised. What a disaster.

Plus the Pageant has it down to a science.

PLEASE ROBERTS BROS!!!!!! SELL THE BUILDING TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO RUN A CONCERT VENUE!!!!

Seriously, though, aren't these guys embarrassed to have there name attached to this thing? Their hearts are in the right place, but they're just not qualified for the job. Seeing their development performance in this city so far, I'm shocked that they ever got so rich. Harsh words, but I gotta call it how I see it.

:(

The brothers seem to have a lot of unfinished/unstarted projects. Did they bite off more than they can chew? They seem more used car salesmen than developers. A lot of properties, including the Orpheum, are sitting idle, which makes me wonder if they have deep enough pockets to get the job done?

Roberts Orpheum, Roberts Tower, the project on Euclid/Delmar, have either never been started or have been huge disappointments. I heard that they made all of their money due to political connections and affirmative action/quotas. I don't expect much from them, but I wish that the properties they hold were given to developers who are successful on merit (prove me wrong!).

I thought they made their money by being in the right place at the right time in the telecommunications industry. The real estate development came later.

When it was the American Theatre, I saw the Chemical Brothers there. It was awesome. The place was a dump, but that made it cool. If they book the right kinds of bands, it doesn't matter how nice the venue is, people will come. They need to quit the 'adult contemporary' stuff they're trying to do, and appeal to the people that go out to a lot of concerts. College students, and younger people.

I saw my first show there in my life. The Foo Fighters on their first tour in the sixth grade (March of 1996) with my friend and his dad. Hah. We sat in the balcony and watched the dangerous moshing from above.

Just drove by there last night. What a shame. It was so dark, the marquee lights and display were not on. Looks like they have a couple contemporary gospel acts booked, but other than that, there's nothing. It's hearbreaking. I loved the American Theater; saw some great shows there.

I agree with the earlier poster who mentioned that it doesn't matter what kind of shape the building is, book the right shows and people will come. Booking good shows brings people back to the theater which brings more revenue which could lead to better improvements to the building over time.

I just went back and looked at some of my old ticket stubs from the American Theater. I'm that dork that likes to keep the ticket stub. Here's some of the great shows I have seen there:

Paramount's Original Laser Spectacular featuring the music of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppling - 1/16/1993

Megadeth with special guests Stone Temple Pilots - 2/4/1993

Living Colour with Bad Brains - 4/27/1993 (fantastic show)

Helmet and Rollins Band - 8/10/1994

They Might Be Giants - 11/13/1994 (in their prime - the place was packed - they even had to add a second night!)

Oasis - 2/24/1996

Foo Fighters - 3/26/1996

Ben Folds Five - early 1999 (didn't keep that ticket stub). I think this was the last show I saw there.

Ahh, the memories...

Great show. Living Colour must have been cool.

I'm trying to think of what other acts I've seen there - Wilco (95), Ben Folds Five, Counting Crows (98?), Dave Matthews (95), there are a lot more, but my memory is failing me...

I miss that place - I loved seeing shows there.

My guess from being in the place for a company meeting rental a year ago is that it isn't near up to buidling or fire code. Besides being dirty and cluttered, there was exposed electrical wires, broken plumbing, etc...

Fire exits remained chained and/or broken during our event - which many complained about.

I remember seeing Living Colour in late 88/early 89 at Mississppi nights. Was under 21 and in the front pit when lead singer Corey Glover dove off the stage into the pit. I was one of the few that caught him instead of running away. Both my hands were on his back and he turned to me and said "Throw me back up!" More people showed up and we pitched him back up.

Who on earth would you call? If you call the Roberts brothers to complain about the place being empty, they'll tell you to book an event.

I walked past Dapper Dan's (a bar on Tucker) one night last week. There was no one in the place. Should we also call and complain about that?

I saw Morrissey there in the mid-1990's. He complained about the venue, sang a handful of songs, insulted the audience and left. He got really mad when the crowd asked for Smiths songs. My husband drank too much whiskey and threw up on the St. Charles/Tucker parking lot.

Only if they close everyday for the next six months, open for 1 day, and then close again for another 6 months just like the Orphium does. There has got to be a way to create some bad press about this.

Apply some pressure on them to utilize the Theater for top notch entertainment.
