Does the TiVo® box work with Echostar/Dish Network Receivers?

A TiVo® box is compatible with Dish Network receivers that support IR control (all recent Dish Network receivers so). However, if you have a Dish Network receiver that does not support IR control, such as the EchoStar 4000 or JVC 4500, the TiVo box will not be able to change the channel on your satellite receiver unless you upgrade to a newer receiver.

Thanks, innovation, I had forgotten that I'm not the only one living in the building.

Yes, it's bad to have only one choice now, but seeing as a home-owner's association has not even been formed yet, I think the developers decided to start with one company and leave it to us to expand our options once the Association actually comes into existence. I was contributing my opinion on the two choices that we seem to be starting with, as I think that there are some positive aspects to both.

By the way, my post was directed to the entire forum.

We need to understand we're posting in the same public forum and postings that are directed to the entire forum shouldn't be interpreted by one person as directed towards them because they feel a certain way. :D

Not a future or current resident of Meridian, but I wanted to add this point.

Harvey,

How you feel about Charter, is how I feel about Satellite. I've dealt with both services on multiple times and locations, and I'm much more happy with Charter than I've ever been with a dish. Not only that, but in regards to the internet service (which is much more important to me than tv), Cable internet in the St. Louis area is leagues ahead of DSL.

My post was as well. You stated the Meridian did us a service in not initiating a Charter option and I disagreed. No hard feelings.

Trent and innovation,

I agree on both points. Admittedly, I've also had some rough times with satellite in the past, and the internet is definitely slower with DSL. I think the Association should definitely put "adding more TV/internet options" on the "to do" list, as soon as its formed.

When I think of Charter, I still think of 80% of the city losing cable the night of the NCAA men's basketball championship. I'm still scarred from that evening.

My last post wasn't to disagree with anyone, more to point out some potential positives in what we're currently "stuck" with. We should have options, however. I'm in complete agreement on that point. I

Now that there are people living in the building, I assume that somebody's used the Asko washer/dryer combo. I'm curious to hear how well it works. Does it wash and dry a load in a reasonable amount of time? (2 hours for both cycles, IMHO)

I've read some really bad reviews of the combo machines, so we asked for a separate dryer in addition to the combo unit. Now I'm hearing that ventless dryers don't work very well, so I'm getting a little nervous. I don't want to be running to the laundromat every time I need to wash a load of towels!

Does anyone know if the upgraded stackable washer / dryer has this problem? Vented, ventless, venti... Wait, that's Starbucks! :P

I totally agree - I absolutely love the Tivo functionality! At my previous residence I had Tivo through Direct TV and also had DVR through Comcast. Since then, I have purchased an actual Tivo receiver. IMO, they all seem to work about the same but hope since I'm already paying for the Tivo service that it will work with the Dish Network receiver. We'll see how it works once I get my cable up and running and I'll let you know Central Scruntinizer!

I'm interested to know why we were offered only one choice for Dish (All- Star Satellite Systems) when these satellite providers are independent? Isn't it that we just are able to have Dish or are we required to go through the specified carrier? In the documents from Civitas Development supplied by All-Starregarding cable I did notice that they were offering any specials. Over the past several weeks I have received, via newspaper and even in mailers, offers for the Dish in STL - all having similiar yet different specials (free installation, free DVR upgrade, $100 credit over 1st 10 months, free premium channel for 3 months)). Heck, they even have Dish 'deals' at Costco and it's a takeaway flier that you can call up and request and it has the same offer.

Harvey..., innov8ion, or anyone else that has signed up for cable already - were you offered any discounts or specials on cable?

I got the upgrade stackable, because I heard that the combo ones can take a long time to dry (being 110 vs 220). I assume these are vented, but maybe not? I know the bathroom fans are vented, so why not feed the dryer in there too? What about the stove hoods?

Because there are completely different codes for the two. In fact, there probably isn't a code for venting bathroom air, but imporperly venting dryer exhaust is a major fire hazard.

It's possible the Meridian signed a contract limiting us to that vendor. Maybe it's only feasible for one dish provider in the building. I have no clue...

I haven't signed up for cable because as far as I know, it's not offered. I'm not going to wait at my apartment for a four hour block just to be told it won't work.

I was told that no contract was signed with Dish. As far as special offers from All Star, they are offering 3 months free of 1 premium movie channel, no charge for installation, and there may be a DVR upgrade too - not sure. There should be a red flyer on your door with specials.

I'm pretty sure that the stackable dryer is ventless too. I'm sure that it will work better than the combo, but not sure how much different from a vented dryer.

I will say that Charter has screwed the pooch on their DVR system. My brother is one of those subscribers that Charter loves, has the most premium HD package, all the channels possible...pays out the rear for it (despite my telling him he can get a better deal if he'll just call and ask for it), yet he's been on the 'waiting list' for DVR for over a year. Obnoxious.

DishNetwork just set my place up. Apparently the Meridian is the first building the technicians have ever seen that is completely wired for satellite. Each floor has a room with about 40 switches, and apparently the satellites are already on the roof. It took them about 45 minutes (most of which was setting up my receivers) to hook up two TV's in my place.

I can get all the channels I had with Charter for cheaper.

As for the DVR, two separate set-ups were free with my service. They're in my place now.

Very cool.

Is the DVR TiVo or their own private brand?

I, too, had Dish installed today and echo the Birdman's sentiments! I actually got a dual receiver so two tv's feed off of one box. Perhaps that is what the Birdman has as well? The DVR has 100 hours of record time and it's the Dish's brand - not Tivo. I had pending plans after the installation so I wasn't able to check out all the bells and whistles yet but so far, so good.

Also, since the building has to be Dish, we should coordinate some of the incentives that they pass along for referring a friend. It's mutually beneficial and we may be able to help our neighbor's out. Just a thought.

Just as a data point, Elder Shirt was wired the same way, only for DirecTV. It's worked out pretty well, even if DirecTV's customer service is completely unable to cope with the idea.

Thought you guys might find this interesting.

Court to Dish users: No TiVo for you

The injunction could require EchoStar DVRs to be shut off in users' homes.

noticed they took down all the wood that surrounded the wash ave exterior. Guess that's just a step in teh long process of getting the building open, but it's a good one. Nice to have the sidewalk open and be able to look in the windows...
