This seemed like a nice pickup in funding

Varsity Tutors, a St. Louis-based startup that provides in-home tutoring and test prep, has raised $57 million from a group of investors that includes musician and TV personality Adam Levine.

Varsity Tutors was founded by St. Louis entrepreneur Chuck Cohn in 2007 while he was an undergraduate studying finance and entrepreneurship at Olin Business School at Washington University. Cohn developed technology to expand access to tutoring materials in a variety of subjects.

Tech hub planned for Laclede's Landing
Plans are underway to develop on Laclede's Landing a tech hub in the century-old warehouse that formerly served as the Metro transit agency's headquarters.
Investors led by Spinnaker St. Louis bought the six-story building last month from Metro. Spinnaker's principal, Amos Harris, said Wednesday the building is well suited for small, "eager beaver tech companies" because of the extensive fiber communication network left by Metro.
"That building has more fiber than anybody would ever need," he said.

Gateway Media (the Answers spin-off) and Perficient both are acquiring out-of-state companies. (per BizJournal.) Of course neither of the buyers are in the City.

It would be great if Gateway could leave Clayton to anchor a new building in either CORTEX or downtown - especially downtown as part of the 10,000 jobs initiative being pushed by Gabe Lozano.

I just love this quote:
Prior to moving Taptl to St. Louis, Wolff spent the majority of her time talking about her product to a wide variety of people in a multitude of cities around the world. “Really, before Prosper and Arch Grants, I was having a hard time finding distributors and customers. However, when I moved here, I had so many companies reach out to me in terms of sales and distribution. I can’t tell you how instrumental St. Louis has been, more than any other city, in helping me knock down hurdles.”
Wolff’s passion for transparent LCD technology is matched by her passion for building a business in St. Louis. “Prosper is one of the best things that could have happened to my company,” she says. “And receiving an Arch Grant is the perfect transition for our next growth phase. Being in St. Louis and having the support of Prosper and Arch Grants has allowed my company to reach key milestones in six months. Without being in St. Louis, it would have taken us 10 months or longer to get where we are now. St. Louis is the best location for my growing business. I tell every entrepreneur I meet to move to St. Louis.”

way to go St. Chuck!

"In what may come as a surprise to some, St. Charles County — and not the city of St. Louis or St. Louis County — is the best in the state when it comes to tech job growth.
In fact, it’s one of the best in the nation."

^ I guess somewhat of a surprise but it's been pretty apparent there is some significant tech presence out there.

Meanwhile, Downtown Detroit is landing yet another tech division of a suburban company:

http://www.freep.com/story/money/busine ... /77302714/

“We’re glad to be part of Detroit’s technology revolution,” Ty Beltramo, the company's chief innovation officer, said today. “There’s a critical mass forming around tech in Detroit right now. This move puts us close to our technology partners and the region’s best innovators. Detroit is a great city with an amazing culture. We want to participate in its future.”

About 30 workers moved into the offices last week; the company expects to hire about 20 more by the end of next year....

^ former SE Michigan (and Cleveland) resident; I keep in touch with developments there: I deliberately have scaled back my postings about developments in those two cities recently, but I do think we can learn a lot from what's going on in those two rust belt peers, especially in terms of Greater Downtown growth. Pretty impressive turnarounds that we just can't seem to get any similar traction on.

Great news. I never knew there was that much space to expand into above the Tivoli.

I saw that in the St. Louis business journal this afternoon. Looks like plagiarism to me... Our journalist lifted the original article's prose word for word and put her own name on it.

Two Canadian sports startups move to St. Louis (Post sub article)

Two sports technology firms from Canada are moving their headquarters to St. Louis to be close to Stadia Ventures, an investment and consulting firm....

Chou said each startup will bring three to five jobs to St. Louis this year.

These companies will join Stadia Ventures at T-Rex.... btw, I don't think we have a specific T-Rex thread. Should we?

Nice write up on tech space and real estate. My takeaway is St. Louis glut of cheap space is paying off. Also, reports CORTEX with 4% vacancy. With @ 4260 space pretty spoken for you have to assume CORTEX needs to get Crescent Building rehab underway and or Wexford can break ground to maintain the momentum. I still have to believe a well planned multi use rehab of Railway Exchange building plays right into St. Louis growing tech scene. Now if I had a few million to throw around or won the lotto.

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/blog ... enter.html

Cortex may be the hottest tech space in the region at the moment, having recently landed big names such as Square, TechShop, AAIPharma, Pandora, the Cambridge Innovation Center and Boeing as tenants. Vacancy in the district is about 4 percent, the CBRE report found.

More space is soon coming, with the three-story, $24 million 4260 building at 4260 Forest Park, soon to come online.

Meanwhile, Baltimore developer Wexford Science & Technology is developing three technology-related buildings totaling more than 500,000 square feet on the 7-acre site of the former U.S. Metals and Supply building.

This has been happening in cities like Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver - essentially boomtowns - for decades.

They overbuild, glut out, then get expanding companies and businesses who take advantage of cheap new office space or warehouse space. Jobs are created.

"The problem", if you will, in St. Louis is that it doesn't overbuild. A lot of its office space is old. Even "Class A" space for rent is old (or is aging) or rehabbed because nothing new has been built.

Anyway.......Houston is beginning to see a lot of layoffs because the energy sector - across all sectors - is sucking right now. All of the sparkly new towers with million-upon-millions of square feet could be sitting empty (or nearly) soon - as energy workers keep getting laid off. Many towers are still under construction.

I am willing to bet, however, Houston's economy won't take that much of a hit (or slump) for long because the office market in Houston could become "renters market", which would help fill up space.

Even the industrial warehouses/distribution centers are thriving in Houston........ AMAZINGLY thriving. Lots of speculation. The few little warehouses/DCs under construction in metro St. Louis (or even in KC) pale in comparison - by far. But when the glut happens........Houston likely will be a big first choice for firms looking for cheap space along the Gulf Coast.
