Charter claimed that they didn't get the check that went sent out on November 6th for our service. We didn't want to send another check because we knew they would find the check, then screw our bank account up by cashing them both. We also didn't want to cancel the check because of a $30 fee, so we thoguht we would wait it out. My wife and I called them 11 times, and had an online chat, and they still showed up and took our cable box away. So guess what happened Saturday? The check they never received was cashed by Charter. So, it was their fault...But *shock* they didn't apologize, won't give us a month or even half a month free service (except for the amount of time we had NO service), etc, etc. So I think I will just get basic cable with them then try and get DSL with someone else...Naked DSL I guess. I dunno yet.

Any way, we are able to break our lease as long as we find a new tenant, which we have. We are just waiting on all of her paperwork to make it through and everything. If we pay the sec. deposit on our new home in Maplewood, they will hold it and have an official move in date of January 1st, 1st month free, so first rent payment is Feb 1st. Pretty freakin' awesome. My wife is getting her wish of not moving before the holidays, so we're happy about that, too.

Not to go on a Charter rant, but they seem to be getting (slightly) better. We had them come out a few weeks ago for a repair, and they actually gave us a two-hour window. Then, the other day, they sent us a card apologizing for the service outage. I realize that these are relatively minor things, but it at least shows that someone there gives a crap, which is certainly something that could not be said before. They still have their issues, and need to improve in order to compete effectively with satellite providers, but maybe this is a step in the right direction.

I got one of those cards too. As long as they have a need for a pre-printed apology card, they still have a customer service problem.

There's satellite too, if the owner allows it. Also, AT&T's U-Verse (IP-based tv) is supposed to roll out in St. Louis at some point.

Central West End is by far the best place to live in STL. Convenient to Clayton, Downtown, North/South City. Tons of restaurants/shops, convenient metrolink, and a wide variety of condos, apartments, and townhomes

Just a question...If you find a house in STL city limits, that is 3 br, 1.5 ba, 1500 sq. ft, and its under $100,000 (like around 75-90), should any assumptions be made? Like, the house is terribly outdated, neighborhood is bad, anything? I believe the zip codes I searched were all south St Louis.

I would guess that a house of that size that is less than 100k is either needing a lot of work or is in a bad neighborhood or both.

However, it could be the deal of a lifetime, too.

So what's the average for, oh...say...

2 or 3 br, 1 or 1.5-2 bath, 1000-1200 sq ft. in the city?

Our Maplewood apt. fell through and we are still in Fairview Hts. We might end up just staying here, but if we can sell our house back home (Benton), we might look in to buying again. But if we are buying and making that kind of investment, I want it to be in the city.

150-175...except that you could probably get substantially more sq. footage. These old brick mamas can be 1600-2500 sq. ft for under 200k in some places.

Honestly, just take a lunch drive if you've got a bead on a house, its the best way to get a feel for an area.

Seriously, look around. $150-175K may be average, I don't know. But I'm looking for the same kind of place, and I'm finding plenty of options for around $120K.

Also, remember how desperate people are to sell right now - prices may be more negotiable than usual.

If you can do a condo the West End has a bevy of affordable options. And he's right, people are clamoring to sell.

Anything around 100k that is somewhere you and a family would want to live is a gut rehab.

How is the neighborhood around the Turtle Playground/Park?

I think it would be awesome to be a stones throw to Forest Park. Unsure of the neighborhood. And what street is Turtle Playground on (64/40 and....).

That's Oakland and Tamm. It's Dogtown. Great place to live!

^ Thanks for the response!

Since, from my understanding, "Dogtown" is an unofficial neighborhood name, what is the official neighborhood name?

Clayton-Tamm, Hi Pointe and Franz Park are the official names of what's more commonly known as Dogtown.

I've always considered Dogtown to be between McCausland and Macklind, Oakland and Manchester, as this article mentions:

And this site, by the fellow interviewed in the article, is replete with information:

Awesome. Thanks guys. I hope to be narrowing a search down in the next 3-4 months, depending on what another job tells me :( (a job where I don't want to live).

PostApr 04, 2008#145

Okay, can someone tell me what they think of these general areas? I know the whole "just drive around" "walk around" stuff, but that's not what I'm looking for. I could see 4 Crips doing a C-Walk down the street and I wouldn't think anything about it.

So...Would you leave your attractive wife and 10 month old child at home alone in these neighborhoods?

366X Montana at South Grand, St. Louis

4434 tholozan at Kingshighway, St. Louis(?)

PostApr 04, 2008#146

^ I looked up the address on the Montana @ Grand property and it would save me 6 miles on the drive to work, which isn't enough. I'm driving about 35 right now, from Fairview Heights to Olive in Creve Coeur (CityPlace).

Are there any neighborhoods that are close to 70 or 44 that are nice neighborhoods that would provide for a 10-20 mile drive (20-40 minutes)? The main concern is gas consumption. It's getting more and more expensive every day and right now I'm spending probably $150 a month on gas.

Not sure about Montana, but I've known many who've lived on Tholozan (and around there) and loved it. Plus, you could walk to La Tropicana, which is Muy Delicioso!

Montana: No.

Tholozan: Yes.

I actually used to live on Tholozan, but on the other side of Kingshighway. Sounds like the address you listed is in Tower Grove South.

the Hill. there is one house for sale on my street right now. I feel completely comfortable leaving my wife at home when I travel for work. Of course, you would have to be alright with potential shot-gun style home.

Question: are you looking for a home to move right into? Or, are you comfortable being in a place that needs some work.

^ Unfortunately, I am having to rent. So wherever I end up, I will be renting. We want something nice, but it doesn't have to be extraordinary or anything, especially for our price range. We would like to get a house to rent, or at most, a duplex. We have pets which makes it a bit tougher. We've been doing the apartment thing for a bit and we've had our share of it.
