The Hamptons (Northampton and Southampton neighborhoods) are very nice. Some of the multi-families are nicer than others, so it would pay to drive by units that interest you first.

When we moved to the city five years ago, we found a unit in a two-family flat in the Holly Hills area just west of Grand and stayed until we bought our house three years ago. If you're open to the idea of living in a two-family unit, I highly recommend Holly Hills. Many great restaurants and stores are nearby, the architecture is great, it's a family atmosphere, and Carondelet Park is nearby!

And, as I said in my most recent PM to you, I'll keep my eyes open for properties that might be of interest to you! 8)

If you're looking at an up-and-down duplex, keep in mind that it's still an apartment, and a lot of noise could come through the floor.

Some side-by-side duplexes are built with a solid, foot-thick masonry common wall. These types are virtually soundproof. But some are basically a single structure with a thin, drywall, common wall. Lots of sound will come through, and even more if the heating/airconditioning ducts are in the common wall. Tap on the walls. Check the basement. If there's a stone foundation wall supporting the central common wall, then you're in good shape. If it's supported by a single I-beam, then forget about it. I lived in a poorly-built side-by-side for a year, and I counted the days until my lease expired.

On my street, 2 bed apts seem to rent between $400-1000/bedroom. One reason the Moorlands is deceptively diverse.

You may have better luck in the next couple months. Fewer people move in the winter so less properties become available. I wouldn't give up on Dogtown, esp. the south side of the neighborhood--streets like Dale, Mitchell. I've seen quite a few houses for rent in that area. If you have questions with an address feel free to PM me.

I just noticed this post. Thank you.

And yep, we were looking around Nov/Dec of 07, and we had our freakin' choice of places.

Does anyone know the nearest Gold's Gym from Dogtown? Typing in

"Gold's Gym, St. Louis, MO" on Google yields a downtown result on 6th street? Is that one still in existence? Otherwise, is there any closer or any close if that one is shut down?

This has got "t-shirt idea" written all over it - something like, "come live in the Hamptons" and then have a picture of Tilles Park.

^ I already used Google, as stated in my post. Did you bother reading it?

I also looked on goldsgym.com, which doesn't list the downtown location.

I guess I will just call the number for the downtown location and see if they are still in existence.

edit; called the number, got a "This call cannot be completed as dialed." So I'm guessing Gold's Gym is no longer downtown.

GoldsGym.com doesn't list it because it is closed. There's an entire thread on it.

Oh, my bad, an entire thread on moving, and I'm looking to move so I thought I would ask a question in regards to it, and how foolish of me, I didn't scour through the UrbanSTL backlog first.

Man, I'm such an idiot. If only I had a shotgun, I could splatter my brains all over the wall right now.

Does anyone know any gyms around The Hill that provide childcare? Appears there aren't any Gold's around there.

I think the new Club Fitness at Hampton Village does, as does the St. Louis Workout at Hampton and Potomac.

There's also the Y on Macklind (near Arsenal) - not sure.

Awesome, thank you.

I checked out the YMCA, which would be 1 mi. from our potential new home, and it does have childcare. Thanks again!

Juice - looking on the Hill are you? Good for you. When you move in, PM me and my wife and I would be more than happy to show you and family around. The Hill is such a great area.

FYI - the Y on SUBLETTE is, in fact, 1 mile from the Hill. It is very kid friendly and has a ton of young parent clientele. I'm at the Y almost everyday and absolutely love it. Bonus: Sublette Park is in betwixt the Y and the Hill and has tennis courts, ball fields, and a small playground.

Well, we found a place in Dogtown to rent, and barring any fires gutting the home or anything (the way things have gone thus far in my search, I wouldn't be shocked)...

So now, a few questions;

Where to get groceries?

Chain or local, I need cheap...like...almost Wal mart cheap...No, not almost, I need Wal Mart cheap.

Any locally-owned restaurants in Dogtown I should know about?

Any locally owned convenience stores I should know about? I'm talking more corner-market-ish than a QT on Hampton.

Well, we didn't end up in the Hill, but I do believe we will be going to the same Y on Sublette.

I just looked at the STLMPD.org crime stats for Dec-Mar. Holy sh*t.

Is Dutchtown really that bad? I mean, we are getting a good deal, but damn...I'm leaving a wife and 10 month old home alone all day.

Yes. Personally, I would not live in Dutchtown.

Where I would rent:

Shaw

Clifton Heights

Southwest Garden

Dogtown

Hill (areas around Shaw/Hereford)

Maplewood is nice. I lived there for a year before I bought my house on the Hill.

Sidebar on the Crime Stats: Thank you for posting this; It's been a while since I've seen this data. Forest Southeast has terrible stats! Look at Academy and Foutain Park. Wow. Textbook example of "Stigmatized Property"

Is the Moorlands Hi-pointe/Skinker/Clayton area? Is the Moorlands within the city limits?

Good Luck, man

Don't knock Dutchtown till you've tried it. Statistics can be deceiving as we all know from living in "the most dangerous city in the US" I just bought a house in Dutchtown a year ago and we along with many other young people in the neighborhood are trying very hard to improve the area. Tower Grove, for example, wasn't the luxurious area it is today 10 years ago -- we all have to start somewhere.

It just sucks when you're working so hard on improving an area and its reputation and you're constantly met with people judging it without really knowing.

Every Sunday there are a ton of families out in Marquette park watching their family members play soccer or rugby. Neighbors, in my experience, watch out for each other. People say hello to you on the street. There's a new cafe/eatery opening just down the street. We have the Iron Barley (featured on Food Network), Ted Drewe's and the Feasting Fox. There is so much potential here and so many cheap houses for sale to be renovated and moved into by other "urban pioneers."

Yes, Dutchtown is rough around the edges, but things happen everywhere! Plus, Dutchtown is one of the largest neighborhoods in the city, which means that many separate little areas are clumped together into one stereotype which may or may not represent the whole area.

Congrats on your house over in Dogtown! My brother and I did some contract work over there in a great little city home. Really is a great neighborhood.

Grocery Stores: You have the luxury of being in between Clayton, Forest Park, and the Hill. So, your options in terms of Grocery Stores are really good. There is Schnucks on Clayton in Clayton, as well as a Schnucks near the Hill at Arsenal and Brannon. Secondly, there is a Save-A-Lot on the Hill at Macklind and Southwest. Of course, I would highly recommend you buy your vegetables, milk, and eggs from Joe Campise's Grocery Store at Wilson and Marconi - in the Heart of the Hill. His prices are cheaper or on par with all of the big name grocers. Sidebar: he would've delivered had you lived on the Hill. He buys from Produce Row on Friday's and Saturdays and usually discounts veggies towards Wednesday and Thursday. There is no Wal-Mart in the city, brother, that's just a fact of city life. Plenty of Save-A-Lots, Saveways, and Dollar Generals.

Restaurants: Seamus MacDaniel's, Jacksons, Felix's, The mexican joint across from Felix's.

Bakery: The Cakery

Why does the one on Telegraph Road have a St. Louis address and zip code?

Juice,

If you're living in Dogtown, I assume you'll likely be shopping at the schnucks on Clayton and the Wal-mart in Maplewood.

Take the fam to turtle park, and a stroll down Demund.

How decent is the area north of Calvary Cemetery and southeast of Riverview Blvd/Dr., North Riverfront Park?

Any good housing in that general area? Safe?

someone will have the technical answer for you, but it's pretty common for residents/ businesses in STL metro municipalites to use "St. Louis" in place of the actual city for their address. You'll have to go by zip code or geography. For Instance, the southern most border of STL city is the mighty River Dez Perez (Des Peres). I believe that particular Wal-Mart is in Mehlville?
