^ Sure - I can't imagine it taking more than 30 minutes - at least on a regular basis. I'm guessing traffic will be worse once I-64 shuts down. Why not head into work early one day and go through U-City and then do the reverse on the way home?

Yeah, I plan on doing that. If it's going to even slightly-regularly take 30 minutes to get to or from work then it's probably not worth moving over, other than saving actual mileage.

I will most likely do that this week...

once i-64 closes, it will be an advantage to move over from Illinois even if it is a half hour commute from u-city...you don't want to be using an east-west expressway coming from the east to access olive blvd and I-270 if you don't have to...you definitely don't want to be using I-270 or switching on or off I-270 from another expressway...

i think that overall, times of a reverse commute on olive between creve and u-city will be the same as now in the evening after I-64 closes. for the past year or more, construction at I-170 and olive has created around a 15 minute delay, but should be done soon...

i commute from deb place to a mile or so west of I-270 on olive, and it takes me around 30-35 minutes not using an expressway...but there are never any other delays out of the blue (unlike an expressway) than the current construction delay at I-170.

your work times are going to give you a big advantage.

Great news, warwickland, and thanks for the encouragement.

Pretty much the "straw that broke the camel's back" was sitting, stopped, for 45 minutes because of a minor accident on 270 the other day, making my total commute an hour and a half, and making me 45 minutes late for work.

The wife and I both liked U City, and I love the city feel that U. City has...since it's steps to the STL city limits. I want to move there pretty bad, but we're gonna have to wait for a tax return to be able to afford all the first month crap again.

Any more advice/tips/information from anyone is appreciated :)

PostNov 15, 2007#105

So can somebody tell me what STL neighborhood you are in when you first get off of 64 @ the Clayton/Skinker exit?

Also, any neighborhoods where I could get to Olive blvd in 5-10 minutes that are safe?

You're at Demun on the northwest - not sure what the others are called. There are some decent and affordable home behind St. Mary's (the southwest corner). Dogtown is pretty much to the southeast and there's Forest Park.

Thanks Grover. Looks like I'm looking to cross the river asap, but I want to cut my commute to work down to 10-20 minutes, TOTAL to CityPlace.

Always remember that you are reverse-commuting from the city (or inner suburb) to Creve Coeur Juice. Also, I think that having lots of options (highway and non-highway) available for getting to work is the best strategy for cutting commute times. If you live in any inner suburb, or near the city limits close to, or north of 64/40, you are always going to have a wealth of options to get to CC. There are many large e-w arterial roads that basically go right to CC (or require a minimum of extra navigation) to get to the Creve Coeur area. Off the top of my head, you could take Manchester, Ladue, Clayton, Olive, Page, in addition to the highways, to get to the vicinity.Having options and knowing the roads will always reduce your drive time, so find a place that has access to several good roads and buy a map. Bottom line, if you move to U-City from Fairview Heights (right?), there is no way in hell that your commute to Creve Coeur will not diminish significantly.

^^ Yes you are right, Fairview Heights to U City. I will know my way around pretty quick, I hope. The problem with finding a place is a few of the better search sites (rent.com) don't allow you to search by zip code, and U. City apartments always list "St. Louis" as their city, and I don't know the streets well enough to know what is actually in U City.

I hope to find something fairly quickly, if I get a bite on my apartment in Fairview.

^ Basically, you would just take Olive west. Probably 10-15 minutes total, depending where in UCity you were to choose.

That seems about accurate, innov8. I have been taking exit 34B off of 64 and taking Skinker down to Olive to work for the past few days and I am making it in about 15-20 minutes, and that's with driving all the way from 64/Skinker to CityPlace. I think U-City is going to be the best match for us...now just to find a rental we can afford!

If I remember correctly, 64 is shutting down from Brentwood to 270 for the first year? If so, I think I would continue taking that route even after the shutdown. It's worth it to drive 30 miles an hour down Olive as opposed to driving further down 64 then hopping on 270. After taking 255 S to work for a couple of weeks, I was already pulling my hair out.

:(

Well, rough day in U-City. I guess our price range is too low, because we looked at 4 places today (3 with Ramled Enterprises, 1 with Bellington), and all 4 had bathrooms and/or kitchens that were so terribly outdated that they would actually be embarassing to show to anyone. One of them had that vomit-green color for the sink, bathtub, AND floor tile.

It was a pretty upsetting day, really. I wanted to find at least 2 liveable places today, but it didn't happen. I think I might have to expand my search, but I want to be within 10-20 minutes of work (1 CityPlace Drive, Creve Coeur, MO, if you want to Google Map it :)).

Any other areas??? The places I looked at today were on Delmar (2), Amherst (1), and Tulane (1).

Are you checking out craigslist.org? It's a great place to look for apartments.

Everything I've found so far is on Craigslist or from driving through the neighborhoods.

What I've learned from Craigslist;

if you are looking for a new home in south St. Louis, you have hundreds, if not thousands of options.

if that apartment is located in U-City or Clayton, it is $400 more per month

:(

Anyone? Anyone? I'd like to be 10-20 minutes to work @ CityPlace, but I want an urban environment, so STL city, U City, Clayton, Maplewood....?? anyone have any ideas?

PostNov 18, 2007#116

Could someone tell me a little something about this area;

4547A Swan Ave, St. Louis, MO

Is this a good area? Remember I'm leaving a wife and son home all day.

It looks like a nice place and I'm just a few blocks from this adress, but I gotta say that this one of the less desireable parts of Forest Park Southeast. Maybe not the worst, but not nice. Have you looked at the redbrick management website? Or maybe frontdoor stl? You're probably looking at $650+ for a two bedroom.

And another;

"Wise Avenue @ Bellevue" in Richmond Heights.

I have driven most all of these areas, but I don't know what is good and bad. Some areas that look bad to me are probably fine and other areas that look good are probably bad.

Yeah, it's just not easy for me, because I work 9:30-6:30 and I drive almost an hour both ways. The only good day for me is on Saturday, unfortunately.

Ok, I'm putting in an application for an apartment in Maplewood tomorrow (yeaaaaaaaa).

So, can someone give me some insight to the best cable internet and cable TV providers available? Charter Communications need not apply. Their customer service is horrendous...any recommendations?

Charter will be your only choice for cable.

Congratulations- I think you made an excellent choice! Are you locked in a lease in Fairview Heights, or will you be able to move again soon?

I see CS was already the bearer of bad news. Yeah, you're stuck with Charter thanks to the infinite wisdom of most if not all municipalities in the metro area on the Missouri side of the river. I absolutely loathe Charter, but I've heard horror stories about getting a dish as well, so I stick with what I know even if I hate it. For phone and internet service I'd say stick with AT&T...I tried Charter for those services and realized that having my cable service with them was enough misery for me to withstand.
