Scheduling Escape From New York for a movie night tells us that at least someone in their promotions dep't has a sense of humor.

The midway area will be completely renovated starting this month (April) and will be under construction for one year. It will develope new sleeping rooms in an expanded Marriott hotel, a new restaurant and nightclub for the hotel and new shops.

The midway will now be part of the hotel area and the shopping concourse with foodcourt will remain on the southside of the staton to the lakeside area.

This coming from the Marriott hotel at Union Station General Manager - they are a vender of mine. I just received a general email from the hotel yesterday on this subject.

Any word on new tenants?

Oh God I REALLY hope they said "enveiled".

Sept 4th: Standing In The Shadows Of Motown is not to be missed by any fan of music.

The Natural is a wonderful film.

Rocky Horror? It's time to move on.

:) Good! Atleast they are doing something to improve the situation. By the midway area are they referring to the east/west middle wing of the mall? So is the area where the Fudgery, Bud Store (lower), and Hooters, Old Beatles store, Food court (upper) excluded from the construction?

I went to Union Station with a few friends last Saturday after we went to the City Museum. We walked in the west entrance and man, that whole wing is empty. It's depressing.

Went to US at lunch today to stop by the Cardinals Club House. Incidentally, that may be the only legitimate store still there.

Lots of cheesy gold chain shops and of course, a gun/samurai sword shop.

There were lots of tourists there - the Cards are in town, so I guess people were looking for something to do - and I felt embarrassed for them, like I did when I would see people walking into St. Louis Centre.

Despite the fact that there was a decent number of people at US, Houlihan's and Beechwood Grill were almost totally dead. I may have to go to Beechwood to support the Sage guys sometime soon - at least I probably won't have to wait for a table.

I just came back from watching Escape from New York. It pulled quite a large crowd! They need to do more of these!

Anyway, this was the first time I walked around US. I saw no new construction like an earlier post mentioned. The west wing is completely dead. There wasn't a store in sight.

If they do revamp this place, which I hope they do, please get new flooring. Anyone else agree? The floor they have in there now is all brown and ugly looking.

I believe the West wing is going to be added to the Marriott hotel.

Maybe a new 22nd Street interchange and additional development there will help US. It just can't stand alone and be successful.

Supposedly, they are going to move the check-in for the hotel down to the west wing, and use the entrance across from Maggie O'Brien's as the main entrance. We were told that last Feb, and I cannot picture it at all.

IKEA? I think maybe. Read the article.

How about the "Post-Dispatch" since you're quoting it, linking to it, and stealing image bandwidth from it?

That rendering is pretty early 80s looking. I thought they had pulled a picture from some previous remodeling.

Hey, it's sending more traffic to the P-D. Call it what you want.

Glad Marriot taking some risk on their end by taking on more space. I think Marriot is betting on the need for their rooms/meeting space with Checketts opening up the opera house on one side and the possibility of a rebuilt 22nd street interchange on the other side. Who knows, maybe their is an outside chance for NBA at Scottrade when the region balks at building Rams a new stadium. Any of these developments bodes well for hotel/meeting space/restaraunts.

As far as retail, other then an Ikea, I would rather see it built up around the Loft District along Washington where their is a residential base to make it sustainable as well as a community presence.

Too late

Sometimes I wish the Post Dispatch commenters would just grow a pair and wear white hoods when they go out in public.

Not all of them of course, but there is a definite contingency of that crew that either really feels that way or just likes to their name in print saying some pretty outrageous stuff.

Couldn't help reading them either.

However, I do think their is a valid point being brought up in PD Comments in why main stream retail has a tough go at Union Station. Why go downtown and pay for parking when every shopping destination in the county has free parking or even box stores for that matter. However, event parking is different and the hotel/restaraunts should validate parking.

Forgot about the movie theater being there at one point. Once again, City Centre seems like a more sustainable location.

Like this person, for example:

Make it a "whites only" facility and business will increase instantly.

Ugh.

Some commenters suggested moving the Museum of Transportation to US. I like the idea. It would be nice to be able to go to a transportation museum via more than one mode of transportation. I still haven't been there largely because of its inaccessibility.

While an interesting idea, the Museum of Transportation is a St. Louis County Park.

Might be a good way for the County to cut costs - unload it on Union Station.
