Oo oo - another BIG announcement? Maybe a Whole Foods - what about Trader Joes? j/k

US does have a well-travelled hotel and some of the restaurants seem to do well. I think it would be a fantastic place to have meat/produce market. It's kind of close to the Soulard Market, but I think there's enough demand to make it work. Others have mentioned this before, but the foodcourt could be more uique, grab a deli sandwich kind of place. Whether it's at US or not, our downtown is missing one of these:

Cleveland:

I think that was before the bank took it over...

our downtown used to have one of "those" It was Union Market, which is now the Drury hotel next to Edward Jones Dome.

New Municipal Union Market, St. Louis, Mo. Fred Arvey Postcard. "Union Market, an entire block bounded by Broadway, Morgan, Sixth and Lucas Streets. It is the second largest enclosed market in the world. Its first floor is devoted to the sale of food stuffs, while the upper three stories are used by the city as a public garage." Divided back, estimated post 1916.

and here was the one before the newer market replaced it in 1916:

Re: Union Market - there use to be lots of empty space on the first floor. I'll have to walk over there later today and see if it's still there.

The eastern portion is the lobby of the Drury, but the windows on the western side are all covered up (on the inside), and it seems like there is still a lot of vacant space that could be used for office/retail.

I always wished something like 'Chevy's' would go in there.

You know, a familiar place for Home Show/Car Show/Rams fans to go and feel like there's something for them downtown.

So why not do this at Union Station?

I ate at Union Station yesterday before the Gateway Mall. First, the entire place looks simply tired. Paint is chipping, the ventilation area around the food court is duct taped, there is dirt and what looks like soda spilled on the side of the escalators. Moreover, the selection of shops and also food is simply nothing interesting. I wouldn't come down here from the suburbs for the selection. The place needs to at least be cleaned and a new set of paint. The metal the door handles is simply distressed. The food court tables could use an upgrade. Yet, all of this requires money. I am not sure whomever owns the place would spend the money. I wouldn't because the existing selection of stores are not in demand. They exist elsewhere. Yet, in order to attract new selections, the place will need renovation.

Hopefully it happens. I did enjoy the visit. Shopping here is extremely unique given it is a train station. It simply needs a renovation and some unique shops.

Residential on the Gateway Mall would create more traffic too, thus a demand for unique shops.

If the Bluspace condos/buildings fill up quite a few middle-ish class shoppers would be added. A couple other projects are very near as well. There's a ton of room for residential within a block of the shed. I say put in a meat/cheese/pastry market as shown in pics above, throw in an Apple store, put the bowling hall of fame here with a few lanes and voila!

Residential not on the Gateway Mall would do the same thing.

Exactly. Why don't people see that there's already LOTS of land available? Forget about building on the Gateway Mall. It's not going to happen.

Let's try to keep this more about Union Station. I see where these posts are relevant, but we already have a thread going about the Gateway Mall.

YOU HAVE GOT TO GIVE IT TO STL UNION STATION MANAGEMENT FOR GETTING SOME GREAT EVENTS GOING AT THE STATION DURING THE SUMMER ... INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING.

I understand this event was a great success

You'd think if US management could line up all these special events, they could also offer a wider array of shopping choices and validated parking.

Oh well...

^^I don't see a single event there that interests me (or anyone I know) enough to make it worth the minimal effort/expense required to get to Union Station.

not that anyone asked but here is my opinion on these events...

The aquatic show sounds cool but I definately wouldn't make a special trip to see Missouri fish.

Clay Walker to me sounds about as fun as aids, but i'm sure some folks around here like that sound.

Dr. Zhivegas is actually really good ( for a cover band) and can be seen every weekend at Harry's. (Oh the memories, so many fun times at Harry's)

I think the movie deal can be a pretty good gig. RHPS and YDD might not be my favorite movies, but I could see this catching on.

Yeah, none of those events interest me either. I might take my son to see the aquarium if we're really bored one day, but that's it.

I just don't understand why they'd go to the trouble of planning special events without making some effort to actually improve the destination in the first place.

The old Casa Gallardo/Kriegers/KC Masterpiece spot looks to be slated with a new tennant. The have signs saying "Coming Soon: The Shed".

They're having a hiring fair this Wednesday and will be accepting applications at the Hyatt hotel after that. The email address for the manager is "somebody@hyatt.com". So it sounds like the hotel is trying to prop the station retail up.

They're slated for a July open; so my guess is they're just going to slap some new paint on the place. Heck, it took them a good 3 or 4 months to redo the Einstein Bros Bagels slot.

I'm hoping that's not a literal advertisement.

Is this the space on the East side of the doors (Houlihan's being on the West side)? If so, it's been probably 10 different things in the last 20 years.

I'll give this new place a year, two tops.

Nice to have another non-smoking restaurant. I hope they can make it work, but it could be a challenge. The crowds should return to the Blues games, if they can make it until Oct.
