It may take up to a year to rebuild the tornado-damaged C Concourse at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport

Southwest's website now lists two STL-MKE round trips per day starting on September 7th. They'll be flown on 737s, a HUGE improvement over the regional jets that currently fly the route with Airtran.

Also just want to point out that I totally called this a few months ago XD

Have to agree. Its interesting to note that Congress is at an impasse over a FAA bill as the latest Continuing resolution runs out tomorrow. Not good news for Ohara's modernization program as any FAA shutdown will mean airport construction will most likely come to a screeching halt without FAA oversigt. Planes keeping flying as Air traffic controllers are deemed essential.

On a different note. A bit of good news. Still believe a shuffle of the old Airtran Network by Southwest could boost their presence in St. Louis

Lambert airport traffic up 1.2 percent this year

I read about the Essential Air Service subsidies awhile back. I thought maybe Columbia was one of the cities, but it looks like Cape Girardeau, Kirksville, Ft. Leonard Wood and Joplin are the MO cities. There are more cities with subsidies than I remembered. Anyway, I thought it was interesting Delta is using Memphis over Atlanta because Memphis has better turboprop facilities. Of course this does nothing to explain why Delta flies their regional jets from Columbia to Memphis. I know Memphis serves a lot of destinations, but it hasn't worked out for me in the past.

They say to expect "higher ceilings" when the construction is complete. Huh? I think the area that needs the higher ceilings is the baggage claim, but does anyone know what ceilings she means will be higher?

Rhonda is pretty tall so I can understand her interest in higher ceilings!

I believe they are referring to the corridor connecting Concourse A with Concourse C & D behind the baggage claim.

Little bit of good news, even though I'm not sure if this just replaces some airtran flights being folded into Southwest.

On a side thought, would like to believe that Southwest and Delta taking a serious look at how their cargo operations could or could not benefit from having China Eastern landing at Lambert. I still believe that Southwest might find some benefit by shifting some previous airtran routes to St. Louis from Atlanta (Southeast bound traveller outside of Atlanta headed to Midwest/West Coast). Plus, China Eastern and associated feight carriers need a network. Southwest is the biggest domestic carrier and has its share of freight/parcels offices.

At the Atlanta airport heading back to St Louis after a reunion down here...The new rental car center here is slick...A train takes all customers to complex away from the terminals where everything is either indoors or in a garage...Beats the heck outta facing the elements on and off shuttles and what not...seems like Lambert could do something more than what weve got with the current setup.

What if all rental car agencies were located at the North Hanley MetroLink station?

Definitely plenty of space on the west side of the parking lot for another garage. You would also need a few extra trains to run Lambert Airport - North Hanley to ensure adequate frequencies as MetroLink runs as little as every 20-30 minutes at night. Lastly, while the Main Terminal station has a tiny indoor waiting area, access to the Terminal 2 station is less than ideal.

Overall, though, I like the way you think.

I have advocated a consolidated rental car facility / short term parking garage in place of Concourse D for a long time. Then you could walk to your rental car from either terminal on moving sidewalks. But now that the Airport thinks they need to keep Terminal D active in case the airport is hit by another tornado, it will probably never happen.

Lambert St. Louis International Aiport traffic soars
KSDK-TV

St. Louis (KSDK) -- Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has seen a continued increase in the number of passengers who use the airport.

In August, 542,000 travelers departed on flights from Lambert, which is a 3.1 percent increase compared to the same month in 2010, according to airport spokesman Jeff Lea.

Landed weight, a key barometer of airport activity, increased 7.2 percent in August versus a year ago. For 2011, landed weight is running 5.9 percent over the first eight months of 2010.

Air Cargo activity spiked again in positive territory for a 10.3 percent increase in August and a year to date increase of 4.2 percent.

In thinking about putting a rental car facility near the North Hanley Metrolink station, I'm wondering if it may be too far from the airport for drivers to find...It may sound lazy and crazy, but when returning a car to the airport, the rental car facility needs to be REALLY easy for an out-of-towner to find...Anything that strays too far off of driving to the big airport with all it's signage may be too frustrating...Though it would a great use of an existing rail line...Obviously more frequency would be needed between the airport and the rental car facility...And a significant upgrade to the pedestrian connections between the airport and Metrolink would need to happen (which should be quite doable)...

1) Someone at KSDK was overeager to use the term "soars" on an airport story.
2) How do these numbers compare to national rates?

They wanted to say "takes-off", but it is way overused for airport stories.
