Lambert- St. Louis International Airport traffic up in 2011
Lambert- Louis International Aiport reported a 2.5 percent increase in passenger traffic in 2011. 12.5 million passengers arriving and departing from STL in 2011, saw the largest growth since 2006.
The growth is good news for Lambert and more flights are on the way in 2012.
Article:

footnote: Cincy, Pittsburgh, Memphis and Cleveland - all powerhouse hubs that have lost hubs or have been scaled down in the past years (like STL) all recorded negative or small growth in 2011. STL now has more overall passengers in 2011 than those four airports.

For comparison Amtrak had 310,859 last year. How many did Union Station have way back when?
Southwest has been a big plus and has become a convenient mini-hub for them. Where as Cincy, Pittsburgh, Memphis, and Cleveland wont't see that opportunity after their downsizing.matguy70 wrote:Lambert- St. Louis International Airport traffic up in 2011

My hope for STL, Southwest finds St. Louis a better alternative for some airtran flights after they get their hands around Atlanta/AirTran merger. Can't really see Southwest keeping Airtran's true hub network in place. Second, Southwest convinces powers to be that their is better use for the space taken up by Terminal D - better international gates, more short term parking or even a consolidated rental counter.
That would be 3 days worth of traffic compared to the 1940s.quincunx wrote:For comparison Amtrak had 310,859 last year. How many did Union Station have way back when?
Southwest has already announced they will dismatle the Airtran hub in Atlanta. Can't really see Southwest keeping Airtran's true hub network in place

This may be good news again for STL. Southwest has their own terminal (new) here and is one of SWA largest connection cities (directly in the center of the country).
Another reason SWA has added nonstop flights to San Antonio from STL is for nonstop connections for STL and connecting passengers through STL to San Antonio which is now SWA new international (Mexico and Carribbean) connection point. San Antonio is where Airtran has route schedules to/from international flights - and SWA has acquired those flights into their system.
This was good news for our metro.
Concourse C is set to reopen April 2nd. Concourses B and D are closing the night before. More info on flystl.com.

Must have missed this somehow. Cool. I hope they have some limited time rotating taps like at the Bottleworks and Tap Room.Local brewer Schlafly will debut a new Beer Bar and Grill at C1.
Edit- Okay, so I guess the Schalfly bar is just moving from Concourse B. I hope it lives up to the Schlafly name, I heard the one in B wasn't so good.
I don't know if it wasn't good. But tt was just in Concourse B which only has Frontier and maybe two gates in use at a time. No one is there. That's a limited number of people that can go to the restaurant.Must have missed this somehow. Cool. I hope they have some limited time rotating taps like at the Bottleworks and Tap Room.

The "Tap Room" is in concourse D. I was there on Friday.
What do you guys think of the newly remodeled areas of airport? I think it's looks great considering the canvas they had to work with. I'm excited to see the new C.
EDIT - there is a Tap Room in both B&C

Just got back from miami on US Airways yesterday. Gotta say the airport looks a million times better than coming back from new york in august. The lcd screens with the concourse maps finally make lambert seem like st. louis has entered the 21st century. wish i would've grabbed a picture.
side note. connecting through charlotte i noticed that they also had rocking chairs throughout the airport but they were plain, lambert's has blue logos. The logos really make the chairs look a lot better. I think it would be smart to use the logo more throughout the airport, really brand the place. I dunno, might end up looking cluttered but think it would be good to investigate the idea.

As a brief aside, can Lambert possibly have a worse site? It is an embarrassment. I went there this morning to read the news about all the changes to C concourse and the news is wedged into a little box and you have to scroll back and forth on every line to read it. The entire site looks very 1996.
I had an opportunity to attend the opening of the renovated C Concourse at Lambert, so here it is:

Not only is Concourse C looking fantastic as well as the entire Terminal 1 - today more good news at Lambert International:
Southwest Airlines adds more flights to/from STL:
Boston (one additional Flight per day nonstop)
Panama City Beach, FL (one nonstop to/from - New destination service)
San Diego (service will resume for seasonal flights June 3)

Now if they would just tear down D and build that consolidated retnal car facility
They could even completely finance it off the backs of out of town renters. It works for everywhere else. DFW charges me ~50% in taxes in fees for every rental. It's robbery that I've no choice in.dredger wrote:Now if they would just tear down D and build that consolidated retnal car facility

So St. Louisans who go there pay for their facility. Should we not get them to pay for ours?jmstokes wrote:They could even completely finance it off the backs of out of town renters. Just an FYI,
Charlotte plans to invest $1-billion dollars over seven years into its airport. Upgrades include:
1. A new free-standing international terminal.
2. A fifth runway.
3. An eight-lane entrance road.
4. An expanded main terminal.
5. Possible connector tram
6. $160-million parking deck
Here's where the comparison to St. Louis comes.
Apparently, officials aren't intimidated by the status of U.S. Air's possible merger with American Airlines, but at least one industry expert calls Charlotte's investments "risky" at this time. U.S. Air claims that they are committed to Charlotte as a hub in the event of a merger. Haven't we heard that before?
Charlotte officials say, however, they will perform "stress tests" before embarking on projects. Charlotte officials hope for Douglas to be bigger than Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson someday.
The article is a great read with financing figures, plus it talks about how Chiquita moved its headquarters to Charlotte from Cincinnati because of the number of international and direct flights from Charlotte.

Read more here.“You either grow, or risk withering away,” said Jerry Orr, the airport’s aviation director since 1989. He said he believes Charlotte’s airport could one day be bigger than Atlanta’s.
Fueling the airport’s rapid growth in recent years has been a rise in traffic from US Airways, which has increased flights at Charlotte Douglas 22 percent since 2006.
While airport officials and business leaders expect that growth to continue, the expansion plans come amid questions about what Tempe, Ariz.-based US Airways will look like going forward: Will it merge with bankrupt American Airlines? And if it does, will Charlotte Douglas remain a major hub?
Arch City, my take is Charlette is feeling a lot more comfortable once Pittsburgh was dehubbed and Philly took a hit on the regional connections I believe, maybe mistaken.
Another interesting story was in this weeks Businessweek magazine, don't have link, is on Jetblue and its limitations (no meaningful code share and limited business routes) as well as potential suiters down the road, including American and USAirways. The prize with JetBlue is their JFK hub/New York presence.

^I guess the difference between the two airport hubs would then be a matter of good vs. bad timing.
It'll be great when St. Louis finally gets Jet Blue, but with Southwest's dominance at Lambert, I wonder what the chances are?

AA - US Airways combo, good, bad or indifferent for St. Louis? I'm on the opinion of indifference as they don't have any overlapping cities going out of St. Louis and didn't see AA making anymore cuts after dehubbing of Lambert.
The plus side, getting Delta some more breathing space in Concourse A which will also even out the security line between A & C. Still of the believe that Concourse D needs to have a bulldozer taken to it.
