All of these individuals freaking out and stereotyping the entire metro area, over what happened in Ferguson, are not only being dramatic, but are not helping the situation, by saying they want to GTFO. That is just ridiculous. Talk about 'the sky is falling'! If you are dumb enough to think that issues with race relations only exist in St. Louis, you are very naïve. Do we have issues here in STL, yes, but there's are a reason this is a NATIONAL story, not just a local story. This is something that is going on throughout the country. Wake up! Leaving STL is not going to get you anywhere (assuming before this, you were happy here). Why do you think this made the national news and has spurred debate and discussion everywhere. Ferguson was just one of an endless array of powder kegs all over this country. Again, anyone saying they want to GTFO needs a reality check.... Yeah, I said it.....get a clue or go!... You were never a true St. Louisian in the first place, if you bail during hard times. People who really love it here, embrace the City with all of its faults, not just what makes it great. I want to see things get better in every way. I understand that is not easy, but some here just want to walk away. Ridiculous!

The irony is that people of means getting frustrated and fleeing the city's problems are exactly what caused these issues in the first place.

^ Very true. And I don't know where in America people of good will could make more of a difference than in Saint Louis right now.
Point taken. The negativity was getting too much. Every day for several weeks...multiple stories in all the news outlets every day. People have to vent. It really is frustrating...I see the failures of how society, how land, how planning here is organized every single day, and outside a few committed urbanists no one gets it. And it feels so futile to be working against that mass, that inertia. All I want is the city to be a creative class playground. I've lived that and it rules, but Ferguson emphasizes how far down Maslow's hierarchy much of this place is, and how far off the dream of citywide self actualization might be. And I was reading the Big Sort throughout this. Not a good mixture.just sayin'.
i realize that sticking it out in St. Louis isn't for everyone, so by all means if you're unhappy and unwilling to put any effort into fixing things then leave. i'm just sick of hearing about it (lately in particular, and not just from you).

Jon Stewart was back from vacation Tuesday night. He hit the particulars that we're all familiar with, but more focused on Fox News' reaction and the overall question of race in America.
According to O'Rielly, the media coverage is where our outrage should be directed. And I guess Faux News qualifies as "media".

The Stewart bit, apart from him saying Missourah, was brilliant.
While I'm not a fan of Al Sharpton Stewart was spot on in calling out those whose tired refrain is "where is Rev. Al when blacks kill other blacks". Someone finally had to point out that like him or not Sharpton has made statements and marches against violence between African Americans.
Of course FOX News and local Limbaugh wanna bes like the 97.1 FM crew know how to play to their audience, so expecting them to acknowledge truth and risk their listeners finding other ragebots who tell them what they want to hear (that white, Christian, heterosexuals are the REAL victims in this country) is asking a bit much.

Today is the first day that I do not see CNN "covering" or "dramatizing" Ferguson. There is nothing on the front page online - not even trending.
FOX News, MSNBC, CBS and ABC all kind of dropped it a few days ago.

St louis is growing more diverse, due to immigration, but immigrants seem to be avoiding Africa- American, areas, in the region, according to the article,

"This area, St. Louis, has a noticeably disadvantaged situation when it comes to folks who are born poor getting out of poverty over the course of their life. Places like Seattle? You've got a real shot at it. Places like St. Louis? Not so much."

Why would immigrants choose to live in African-American areas on the North Side? I think it has much less to do with "nobody wanting to live around black people" than the fact that those areas are just bad places to live. High crime, rampant decay, far from shopping and job opportunities, etc.i,Iive,to,draw wrote:St louis is growing more diverse, due to immigration, but immigrants seem to be avoiding Africa- American, areas, in the region, according to the article,

We may be a bit more diverse than in the past but we still have such a long way to go..... we remain one of those largely black-white towns that are increasingly rare for larger metros. Pittsburgh, Cincy, Detroit, Baltimore & Atlanta are among our fellow outliers that lack a greater multiculturalism seen in the majority of American cities.i,Iive,to,draw wrote:St louis is growing more diverse, due to immigration, but immigrants seem to be avoiding Africa- American, areas, in the region, according to the article,

...And he should. What would our city/county population declines be without the Bosnian influx during the last two decades?

^ Anyone know to what extent Bosnian immigration my be continuing? My understanding is that things aren't going too well in recent years in B-H so perhaps more are seeking to come to the US.
I believe a lot of the recent Bosnian immigrants have actually been moving here from Louisville and Chicago, as the Bosnian immigrants here did far better than in the other places they settled or lived in before 1995.roger wyoming II wrote:^ Anyone know to what extent Bosnian immigration my be continuing? Do the Bosnians still live in the city or did they mostly move to Affton? I felt like a lot of the kids went to soldan in the 90's/00's but I feel like they mostly left the city for south county. Am I right?
^ Bosnians still own a lot of property in the city and rent it out to newcomers. Its almost a right of passage for many Bosnians to live in south city when they first arrive.
I also wouldnt be surprised if we get another major wave of Bosnians considering whats going down in Eastern Europe. Bosnians have told me that St. Louis actually has name recognition in the country as the American home base for Bosnians.

Definitely good to hear that people's lives are being destroyed by severe flooding, and thus, might move here.jcity wrote:Certainly good to hear. How do we attract more?
This should be required reading for every single elected official and public servant in our metro area... because it has already been read by just about everybody in Washington DC:
How municipalities in St. Louis County, Missouri profit from poverty

There are 90 municipalities in St. Louis County, and more in the surrounding counties. All but a few have their own police force, mayor, city manager, and town council, and 81 have their own municipal court. To put that into perspective, consider Jackson County, Missouri, which surrounds Kansas City. It is geographically larger than St. Louis County and has about two-thirds the population. Yet Jackson County has just 19 municipalities, and just 15 municipal courts — less than a quarter of municipalities and courts in St. Louis County.
Some of the towns in St. Louis County can derive 40 percent or more of their annual revenue from the petty fines and fees collected by their municipal courts.
