Surously?! That's awesome. I have been pathetically googling "St Louis Centre theater" everyday hoping to find something out...lol :D

Now to get liftoff on solid retail as well in the immediate area. If the necessity of a mall or Target run were eliminated from living downtown, I bet the residential projections for the area would eventually be beat.

*Please, please, please, please, please let the theater be designed WELL and executed/run even better...

There's an AMC in Chicago near Michigan Ave & Illnois - "RiverNorth" area near Navy Pier. It's in the same physical building (well, structure - entire city block) as an Embassy Suites, 4-level underground parking garage, Dominick's grocery, couple of restaurants (bar types) and a Brunswick Bowling alley. The place is *packed* on weekend nights. Hopefully StL's will be similar!

If an "outta the box" theater experience a la Moolah or Chase Park is created downtown, then it is set up for success, IMO...Between the local buzz of Wash Ave, summer tourism, and conventioneers/business travelers I don't know how a hip movie theater wouldn't work...

The marketing of St. Louis conventions should have just gotten that much easier too...Almost makes you wanna live here......oh, wait...lol

The 500 N. Broadway building was sold next door. Looks like they want to update it. Hopefully they piggy-back off of the St. Louis Centre rehab and add some street-level shops/restaurants etc. to continue the redevelopment down Washington.

No, that won't get easier until we get off the "most dangrous cities" list. Hands down, the biggest obstacle in marketing St. Louis to outsiders and conventions is PERCEPTION.

I whole heartedly agree. Short of making sure CQ Press "goes out of business," actual shots of the Wash Ave streetscape featuring movie goers, bowling, good restaurants, world-class architeture will help shift the perceptions of fair-minded people. You can't airbrush an entire movie theater, with marquee and smiling people, onto websites and flyers.

I have read more than one yelper mention their surprise at what downtown St. Louis has to offer. As the area continues to improve, getting the posititve images and experiences out there should be mission one.

I'm hoping that the movie theater will be upscale and only open to people over the age of 21. Hopefully they have a nice bar, and with reasonably priced drinks.

Todd George bands with Spinnaker on blues museum at Merc Exchange

About six weeks after stepping down as general manager of the Lumiere Place casino complex downtown, Todd George has teamed with Spinnaker Real Estate Partners to bring a National Blues Museum to St. Louis with the help of former Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exec Bob Santelli.
George is part of the team working to open a 25,000-square-foot interactive blues museum in Spinnaker’s $142 million Mercantile Exchange redevelopment, a project that includes a hotel, apartment and retail space in the former Dillard’s building on Washington Avenue.
George moved to St. Louis in 2006 after working in New York, Indiana and Louisiana to head the opening team for Pinnacle Entertainment’s $507 million Lumiere Place. He then was named general manager of River City Casino, which opened in March 2010, before returning to Lumiere Place as general manager and senior vice president at the end of August that year. He left Pinnacle in mid-December.
Although the museum is still in its infancy, George said the project team is looking to fill board positions and finalize a fundraising plan. “We’ve gained quite a bit of traction lately, just heading into some serious fundraising opportunities, and hopefully we can continue with the momentum,” George said. “We’re developing a business plan to make this project self-sustaining.” George declined to comment on fundraising specifics.
The museum, which will occupy a portion of the ground floor in the 11-story Mercantile Exchange at 601 Washington Ave., will include media exhibits that highlight the history of the blues music genre, an education theater, a recording studio and interactive displays where visitors can play a drum set or strum guitars, according to George.

^^That's a premium account article...That knock on your front door should come at about 4 AM...lol...uh...

The most exciting thing about this proposal is the seriousness of the people involved. Mr. George has particular experience in opening significant entertainment venues...That's a plus? And he clearly has some personal ties to St. Louis having successfully operated entertainment operations here...This museum would also be a quality addition, to Downtown in particular, that adds to the City's resume of being a true must-see destination...There is real promise for this end of Wash Ave (I'm thinking as it connects to L Pl) to really grow into a very viable entertaiment district...If we could ever get quality retail going........

I hope they get Kevin Belford's involved, his book Devil at the Confluence is one of the best written about St. Louis pre-war blues.

I think this supports the argument against "entertainment districts" being built around downtown. The east end of Washington is organically turning into what the Bottle District failed to become, all while being more connected to the arch grounds and the rest of the city. Definitely something to be excited about!

The 600 Washington entrance sign is LED (I believe) and it changes colors. This is definitely the most attractive garage downtown.

This doesn't appear to be an April Fools joke...From St. Louis Business Journal...
Development of an upscale movie theater planned for the Mercantile Exchange building downtown is getting a big boost, with an infusion of $10 million in additional financing.

According to Amos Harris, president of Brady Capital and a principal of Spinnaker St. Louis, the funding will pay for the roughly $3 million theater, as well as other tenant improvements and real estate costs associated with developing the old St. Louis Centre building. “It gives us the money we need to get everything built,” he said. Connecticut-based Spinnaker Real Estate Partners is developing the building.
