There is more to his presence than hitting. He might be worn down, but I think that the Mets will still fear his bat in the lineup because there's always the chance his bat will find its spark (don't forget the 2004 NLCS). This means that they have to pitch to Albert more than they would if Spiezio or another bench player filled in. It gives us the Pujols-Edmonds-Rolen 3-4-5 and strikes more fear into the pitchers than a Pujols-Encarnacion-Spiezio lineup. The latter playing arguably better than the former, but there is always the chance that the former will do more damage.

There is also the issue of defense. Spiezio doesn't have the range or the arm that Rolen has. The Met's have a fast offense and we're going to need every second to keep them off of the basepaths. Having Rolen's arm out there will probably be the difference between an out and an infield basehit when batters like Reyes hit the ball into the infield.

Speizio has played great, but if we're going to get beat, let them beat us with our best. Speizio will be great for the late inning matchups, etc.

He didnt strike any fear in the Padres. They went after him every game because they knew it was there only easy out other than the pitcher. If he bats 5th and the Mets do there homework they will walk Albert to pitch to Scotty every chance they get. Thats why the need to move him down in the order until he gets a few hits.

If he bats fifth then Pulols is a non-factor, Rolen goes hitless like the 04 WS, and we are bounced in 4 games.

I sit here wondering which Weaver will show up tonight?

PostOct 13, 2006#54

Wow, Weaver pitched a fine game (with the exception of that Beltran blast- which seems to be a recurring theme with that guy and the cards.)

Feel pretty good about that loss, as losses go. Went up against their best pitcher and really didn't get pummeled. Should be a boost of confidence having Carp on the hill for game 2.

He does have like 5 screws in his shoulder or something. Horrible at the plate right now. If Rolen is hurt, he shouldn't be playing. Anyone off the bench has to be a better bat than what he's contributing right now.

Agreed. With Carpenter going I always like our chances. Hopefully a few of those line drives can find their way into the outfield and/or gaps instead of right at everybody. Couple of hard-luck innings. Tough to start rallies when singles come with 1 and 2 outs, though. Coming out of NY with a split would be great (remember we handled the Astros in lasts year's game one, an we all know how that turned out).

Like I said before game 1. If Rolen does play he cannot bat 5th. They must drop him to 6th or 7th.

K, I'm a Cub's fan but would like to see the Cards do well because it's good for the city... What about this Spiezio guy? He's definitely a character with the red splotch on his chin and is soooo clutch! Taguchi's good, Pujols is a star, but Spiezio -- are fans starting to flock to him more and more? Is there room in the lineup for him if Rolen gets healthy and is back at 3B? I may not follow the Cards that closely, but would you rather see Rolen out and Spiezio in? And what if both players were healthy? It seems Rolen won't be near full-strength for the rest of the season. I think it'll be far easier for Larussa to find room for Spiezio now eh? Ok, I'm rambling but whatev..

Rolen won't be healthy again this year. If both players are 100%, you play Rolen. It's not even close. But for now, I would stick with Spezio, I think.

PostOct 16, 2006#66

Could the Cardinals please, please, please do something about those stupid Spezio paste on "goatees" that the rubes are wearing? It's embarassing. The white towels are bad enough, but the "fans" in other cities are waving them too, so it doesn't stick out as much.

St Louis fans are usually too boring. I like the Spezio facial hair. Who cares about what other cities are doing. I love the unique aspects of St Louis baseball

Except cubs fans did the exact same thing with Clement using black tape. We're not nearly as inventive as you would think.

Spezio should shave it off. It looks like a badly kept strip of vaginal pubic hair.

And for the love of GOD - can LaRussa PLEASE tell his pitchers to throw at Delgado and Beltran's head!!!??? These guys HAVE to be broken out of their comfort zone. It's obnoxious. And yes, I'm advocating for the high fast one. I'd expect someone to do it to pujols if HE HAD 10 HOME RUNS AND 10000000 RBI IN THE SERIES!!!!!

I want to know why we let Thompson and Hancock blow the game. These guys have been shaky at best lately. Flores should have come in first or Reyes should have kept going. Inexcusable to let Beltran and Delgato keep doing this. I know they are the better team, but you can't keep pitching Beltran low and inside and expect not to get burned.

^ Oh I don't know. Pulling Reyes was the right move. The middle of the Mets lineup was coming and it seemed clear to me that they had a good handel on what he was going to throw.

Following that with Thomspon, while questionable wasn't horrible either. I mean Thompson did get the groundballs he needed from LoDuca and Beltran, however neither became outs.

After that, I have no idea what LaRussa was thinking. Thomson struck out Wright and the bases were empty, why pull Thompson for Flores here? Why not use Flores the following inning rather than Hancock? Makes no sense.

You want to pitch to Beltran and Delgado, then fine. But why do it with righties?

Fox 2 reported the other night that every playoff game has an economic impact of $3 million for the city - just another reason to hope for a World Series appearance.
