Yup. I support anyone who proudly uses the word "beer", and doesn't rely on trendy, obfuscating, hipster verbiage.traveler wrote: just checked their website and it isn't the usual hop-fest circa 2000 microbrew menu...or trendy sours...yay, that's exciting!!!

^ They've been leasing/renting it for years, with the idea being they would buy it and build it out as a brewing facility. Obviously that hasn't happened, and I'm starting to doubt that it will.

Baden seems like an odd choice for Griesedieck. Anyone have insight into their choice? If they are only going to brew, not that odd, but if they have a tasting room, etc. that is a long haul for people south. I would have hoped for a more central location, maybe near the Grove or Downtown.

Am I correct in assuming that you mean Griesedieck by that?Alex Ihnen wrote:^ They've been leasing/renting it for years, with the idea being they would buy it and build it out as a brewing facility. Obviously that hasn't happened, and I'm starting to doubt that it will.
I suppose how odd it is (or isn't) depends on what they want to do with it. The RFT article stated they intended to open a brewery next year . . . and a tap room later. Though given the way the fella sounds I wonder if he's secretly from the Hill, 'cause consistently focused on consistency sure sounds like something Bera would have said. "This isn't a revival; it's a continuation[!]" I can easily imagine Bera uttering more or less all of his lines. (And possibly drinking his beer as well.)DogtownBnR wrote:Baden seems like an odd choice for Griesedieck. Anyone have insight into their choice? Anyway . . .
If what they want is an actual industrial brewery Baden is a great spot. They've got good rail access. They'll be right off Broadway, near 70, not terribly far from 270, and quite close to a thousand and one trucking companies and freight houses along Hall Street. They'll be close to docks on the river if they want to bring grain by the bargeload. I'd love to see them in a plant like the old Consumer's Brewery, but asking a small company just getting started to tackled a project like that is a bit much. And Baden certainly has an old brewing connection as I understand it. The city's website places the Gast brewery up there somewhere and I vaguely recall stories of other remnants. (Half remembered and ancient.) So anyway, it seems sensible to me if you're more concerned with making beer than selling burgers.

^ No - the church in the CWE was to be a brewery for Cathedral Square.

Thank you Alex. I think I might have read about that a year or so back, but I completely forgot about it. I think I might have been under the mistaken impression that they were looking at the old Italinate Baptist church on the east side of the street, so the Tuscan Temple reference slipped past me.

^ that's nice to see there... hopefully we'll see a good redevelopment across the street on those empty lots before too long.
I have a feeling this was supposed to be inside Bevo Mill originally.debaliviere wrote:Charleville opening a brewery on Chouteau, next to the Vin De Set/PW Pizza/21st Amendment complex: http://www.feastmagazine.com/the-feed/s ... 5c99c.html

Without Schlafly leading the legal fight to change the local laws and ease the grip of ABI, there would not be the thriving beer scene in St. Louis. Also, Downtown West was dead before they opened the Tap Room. Too bad they chose Maplewood over the Hill for their expansion...so it goes. Best of luck to Mr. Kopman.

If the old guard on the Hill wouldn't have been so stupid and stubborn in their opposition, the Schlafly Bottleworks would have been in the old National building there. Instead, they looked to a rather similar site in Maplewood, and it worked out quite well for both Schlafly and Maplewood.

As we discuss this I tip my bottle of Schlaffly's Zwickelbier to Kopman and the fine folks who have made that endeavor a success. They brew a fine bottle and it's darn good to able to drink a genuinely local beer that does so much to support our town. Here's to Kopman and what he's accomplished, and all the fine folks that helped him along the way.

Oh, man! You have to post that on the Urban Theory or Transportation threads. I brought up something similar a while back, because it's a great example the paradox that "safety features" often enable people to behave more carelessly with greater comfort . . . making things less (or no more) safe. Which fascinates me. (Et al.) Great video!shadrach wrote:^Sweden. Love this channel--

Any word on when the Senn Bierwerks Brewery will break ground in U-City. It has been since last March, since I've heard much of anything. I drive by that site often. It is cleared, utilities marked, but no sign of life and I believe the 'coming soon' sign is gone. Is this dead?
^Senn, as well as U City officials, insist that the project is still a go. They say that there have been issues with existing utilities and infrastructure on the site.
The divisive politics in U City, however, have many people wondering what's really happening.

This was posted by a neighbor on NextDoor on November 28th:
"Project developer Tim O'Donnell (says) that the brewery development is on schedule. They are working out details with City staff and MSD. There are a lot of underground utilities on the lot. They poured test pits a few weeks ago. Building materials have been purchased and are waiting in a warehouse for the prep work to be completed. We should be seeing some visible progress on the lot in the next few months, but a cold, wet winter could delay things a bit. Keep watching folks, it is coming!"
On September 29th, someone on Facebook asked Senn "When are you all breaking ground on Olive?", to which they replied "We hope within the next 8-10 weeks if everything keeps moving forward!"
