Downtown Edwardsville is becoming a cool little urban district - still growing and very healthy

O'Fallon Brewery is announcing that they are renovating a warehouse in Maryland Heights for a new brewery. They have been contracting out production of a lot of their beer in Wisconsin, so it's great to see them investing in producing here in the region.
But more than just giving it increased capacity, the new facility will give O’Fallon Brewery something it has long lacked: a place for customers to come and taste the beer, take tours and connect with brewers.

The new brewery in Maryland Heights will have a 50-barrel brewhouse, kegging and packaging lines, a tasting room and tours for visitors. Also on tap is an outdoor patio where beer and a light food menu will be available.

^ nice article that also recaps other expansions including UBC and the Schlafly's mega-plans.

Query for anyone knowing the business side of all this.... how many beer production jobs do these types of facilities bring? And how well do they pay? As best I can tell, it looks like O'Fallon will have mabe 25-30 total jobs with the 25K barrel facility but not sure how many are actually on the production side. Can anyone feel me in?

That sound you hear is the dollar signs popping up in eyes of Maryland Heights officials.

I'm not for drinking and driving in any way, but I'm just saying you'd better darn well make sure you have a designated driver when visiting this place when it opens.

This could be telling:
The St. Louis Brewery, maker of Schlafly beer and St. Louis’ oldest and largest craft brewer, is searching for 40 acres of land in the region’s urban areas to acquire by the end of the year to start construction on a new brewery.

I dunno if it's that telling. Schlafly has been upfront they want to build their new brewery in the city, but that it depends on finding the right spot. I'm not sure this is much of an update on that.

The size parcel they want could only be assembled in a handful of city locations--Pruitt Igoe and a couple north or south riverfront spots. It's hard to see how any of these locations would be cost effective or a best use. I'd love to have them in the city... just wondering where they could pull it off.

^ I would imagine their is a number of sites along a very industrial North and South Riverfront that have freeway as well as rail access for the size brewery being sought. My first thought that comes to mind is a certain Green Street South Riverfront industrial park that is being redeveloped.

Also, I would be utterly amazed if officials of a County/City are telling Schafly that there isn't many suitable sites in a city known for the Clydesdales after Stan K bought a 60 acres property in the heart of LA. They should be tripping over themselves looking at every parcel of property that can be developed or redeveloped and every imaginable tax credit while they are still available. Then again Stan K is getting richer and the Clydesdales are now owned by the Dutch and Brazilians.

Does anyone know why they need 40 acres? That's a lot of dirt

^ they want to have a strong urban gardening component as part of the project, which also may be a factor in suitable locations.

^^ additionally they've said they want to lock up any land they would need for future expansion. they envision being a national player at the level of New Belgian and don't want to have to move again.

I really think land around the cotton belt to the river would be ideal. It is next to rail, there is high visibility from the new bridge, it could tie into the greenway and rootwad park, some old buildings near the trailhead to restore and make into attractive offices and tasting rooms, and alot of the land there is owned by the city. Only downside, by my estimate, is there is only about 25 acres of likely easily aquirable land instead of the full 40 they had indicated. Then again how hard a number can that really be, gardening could be done at a different location in the future if need be. Also the cities correction facility may need replaced in the future freeing up additional acreage if need be.

Financing and land assemblage is a complicated processs. Some land owner may want to be relocated rather than just purchased at market rate (lumber yard?). There may be other parties who have shown interest (Rams?). They won't talk about it until a firm price is agreed upon because they don't want too hurt their negotiating ability.

Nothing on the table but Kraftig has talked long term about brewing here instead of contracting out.

Siemens has launched a national add campaign featuring Schlafly. When I saw it last night on TV I got a ray of hope that Schlafly may soon expand their distribution to include Hampton Roads. I was on the coast in Delaware over Labor Day weekend and saw that the stores there were selling Schlafly, so I have my fingers crossed that they are planning to come just a little bit more south.
