^ Me too.

Many of the smaller current occupants of the shopping center (Starbucks, Cold Stone, Verizon, etc.) could have located on the ground floor. It would have been an interesting candidate for re-use. Too bad the city was in such a rush to demolish it.

Neighbors start petition to fill Southtown Centre

By Shawn Clubb

Tuesday, February 6, 2007 5:56 PM CST

People in the neighborhoods surrounding Southtown Centre have started a petition drive asking businesses to locate there.

The center on the northwest corner of Kingshighway Boulevard and Chippewa Street has sported several empty storefronts for years.

A group called the Southtown Business Boosters has put petitions in the hands of local churches and neighborhood groups asking Trader Joe's, Michael's Arts and Crafts Stores, Books-a-Million and Crazy Bowls and Wraps to lease space.

John Asbury, a spokesman for the boosters, said they felt the four businesses would be good for the center. The group is putting together a letter to submit with the petitions.

I signed the petitions at Southwest Bank yesterday. I was wondering what exactly was up. So is this just the neighborhood grasping at straws, or is there some possibility that these retailers are actually interested? (I heard that Hobby Lobby had shown some serious interest some months ago)

Not sure why they'd want "Books-a-Million" over Borders/B&N, unless B-a-M typically operates smaller stores.

Obviously, retooling the F-B building would have been ideal. Short of that long dead pipe dream, how difficult would it have been to locate the smaller retail storefronts curbside with a view to all that glorious parking and the box stores bringing up the rear?

I'm no developer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night?

I think the correct answer is that the neighborhood group is trying to do what the Sansone leasing agents have failed to do so far...create interest in & a reason for retailers to locate at Southtown

As I understood it Buffalo Wild Wings wanted to go into this plaza but they claim the leasing agent played games that resulted in them pulling out.

I was talking with a manager of another BWW one time and he claimed that he was slated to open the Chippewa/KHWay location. If I remember right he said the Southtown Center plaza manager was impossible to get a hold of and was difficult to talk to. Plus he claimed they gave them only two size options: far too small or too big. Lastly he said they jacked the rent up at the last minute of negotiations: that was the final straw and BWW pulled out.

I've heard the same thing. It's unfortunate - I think that restaurant would do well there.

It would be awesome. Right now the one closest to the city is @Olive and 270.

As an aside, I've seen Sansone management in action at the University Club Tower and they really seem to pride themselves on making things difficult.

I think he also said that Sansone wouldn't let them make changes to accomodate exhaust and grease traps. He said what they were going to do are pretty much industry standard.

The only other place I heard that happen was in downtown Clayton when they wouldn't let Krispy Kreme cook donuts there or Bandanas do BBQ. Both places had the food prepared elsewhere and then brought to Clayton. We see how well that worked as both stores have closed.

So I'm guessing they don't want any restaurants that fry or grill food. I'm guessing the only food Sansone wants served there is sushi.

I'm not sure if this was noted elsewhere but there is a new business opening in southtown center. I believe the name of it is UrbanTan, it is going into the location next to the Verizon. More stores to follow I hope.

Good, we need more places to tan. Maybe they'll get us a nice new nail salon too.

^In that case they should tear down the Starbucks to build another Walgreens too. Can never have enough of those.

Urban Tan sounds like some sort of euphemism.

I guess some folks are gonna have to get a payday loan to pay for their new tan, too.

I noticed this morning that "UrbanTan" looks like "UrbanCan"- bad type choice.

Also, there was a meeting in the Stone Cold Creamery- looked like a workers meeting- lots of kids in aprons. I'm thinking the shut down was seasonal?

No the shutdown was because the franchisee was having issues, either with taxes or the like.

^ Last night I went to the Starbucks next door, and it looks like CSC is open for business again.

My wife thought the Urban Tan sign looked like Urban Can. It's certainly a strange font choice.
