Construction Cameras for both residence halls. Spring/Laclede looks to be about 75% done from the outside and Grand/Laclede looks like they're still working on the foundation.
^ SLU is starting to get the right idea, at least on the main campus (the Medical Campus remains an embarrassment to civilization beyond anything I've seen anywhere). I think they're still about 10-15 years behind WashU in terms of focusing on increasing transit mode share, burying parking, and overall being a good neighbor.
They need to work more closely with Metro to get more people on trains and buses, and then maybe they can start building similarly on the western end of campus where they have way too many life-sucking parking lots. The U-Pass Pilot is a good start.

It's going to take a while to lose all the Biondi trademarks.Randy wrote:^ SLU is starting to get the right idea, at least on the main campus (the Medical Campus remains an embarrassment to civilization beyond anything I've seen anywhere). Any word on Desloge Tower's fate? Anyone know why Biondi decided to copy its design right on to the rest of the campus? Or did he just rubber stamp it? I wonder if he'da put a Kryptonite pyramid on the top of the Continental Superman bldg. if he'd had enough juice for that? Probably so. Copper is so expensive nowadays.

From I-64 elevated eastbound lanes, the westernmost residence hall really changes the campus skyline. It appears to be near completion. Will the next one closer to Grand be an exact copy? I really, really hope they don't try to close Laclede.
Agreed.Mark Groth wrote:I really, really hope they don't try to close Laclede.
It will be one story shorter and have a slightly more modern, glassy appearance (i.e. no little green faux-copper roofs). Also, based on the construction camera, it looks like it won't be set back quite as far from Grand as this rendering lets on (which I see as a good thing):Mark Groth wrote:Will the next one closer to Grand be an exact copy?

The last time they proposed closing Laclede several urban minded people spoke up/ e-mailed in protest. Will have to keep an eye on board bills.

^ ^ yeah, driving by that thing I was surprised how close it is to Grand.
It's gonna totally change the whole experience of entering Grand Center from the south.
Great to see them making progress. I'd like to see them take a more bold steps in building design. Maybe incorporate the copper roof theme more prominently throughout the building if that is a must have.

Yeah - the new residence halls look alright, and they're really well located. The one fronting Grand is particularly good. Imagine if the parking lots SLU owns along Vandeventer were to be developed.

Anyone know when the Marchetti Towers were built? Did SLU build them? Or buy them and turn them into student housing?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I believe they were apartments that were renovated by SLU when they bought them, but I'm not positive. That was the word on campus when I was in undergrad there not long ago

The first one turned out much better than I expected. It's certainly not going to win any awards, but it's much nicer than the original rendering showed.
The next one is going to completely change the vista on Grand.

That complex was originally independently owned, but mostly populated with students. SLU bought it while I was in college, probably around 1995 or so.billikens&bricks wrote:Anyone know when the Marchetti Towers were built? Did SLU build them? Or buy them and turn them into student housing?

Yeah it's not bad, but I am kinda picking up a bit of a Drury Inn vibe from it.framer wrote:The first one turned out much better than I expected. It's certainly not going to win any awards, but it's much nicer than the original rendering showed.

The SLU blue is lit at the new Spring Ave dorm (which looks like it should just about be ready in time for orientation):

No disrespect to SLU, but my god, that blue light is hard on the eyes. Can somebody convince them to change their colors? How about green? Or orange? Orange is fantastic, I say. Glad to see them building new buildings, but as things stand I hope they never buy another light.
