Looks like #2 -- the one at S. Grand & Laclede -- is underway with site work....

Nice step forward for SLU.... once the two are open for fall 2017 the Greisedeck complex will be taken offline for a major renovation and reopening for 2019.

The building looks pretty nice. Hope they don't overdo it with the blue lights. It'll add some nice density by replacing that parking lot even though they're trying to make Grand to look like small rural road.

^ There should be a "Truth In Rendering" law. In this case, TIR would mean depicting colorful Mad Max characters in a chase scene down S. Grand!

Can we get some height in Midtown? This is shorter than original proposal.

I do like the "Gateway" Fleur de lis etched on the glass.

I know Jesuits are modest, but all across the country, urban residential halls are growing a bit taller.

--->Temple's<--- in Philly come to mind.

Nonetheless, these are not bad looking buildingss.

Posted on SLU's Facebook page are new renderings of St. Louis University's Phase II dorm project.

I assume this is why SLU wants to take this part of Laclede?

Not directly but yes. They just want to limit through traffic and only allow access to the garage. That image that looks like a tunnel or skywalk is just a pedestrian path into the courtyard.

This building's much nicer than the one they're building down the street. Should really make a big visual impact driving north on Grand. Nice to see SLU building again, rather than just tearing stuff down. They may finally start to feel like an urban university.

It'd be great if SLU could turn its demolition bloodlust toward, say, the Circle K or the Captain D's rather than historic buildings. All that aside, this is a step in the right direction for them (finally).

^ I wonder if a change in leadership...father Biondi being out...has influenced their decision to go in a more urban direction. It seems like the current president has a more urban focus than the former. I would really like to see SLU transform the industrial valley between Chouteau and I-64. Seems like that area could be a really cool TOD with the right vision.

SLU has the power to buy up large chunks of Midtown, so I'm sure purchasing those two small properties wouldn't be much of an issue.

^ wowza... but that looks to be a private student living tower rather than a campus dorm, right?

For SLU, I think it would have been cool to go with a single higher tower at least matching Griesedeck in height -- but only if it had a really solid design -- rather than two mid-rises.

I wonder how much more they will jack up tuition to pay for these new buildings.

The first one is really going up fast. Definitely makes more of a visual impression than I was expecting.

The one up on Grand is moving crazy fast; we should see structure above ground before too long. Amazing how fast they move when they don't require a deep excavation.

^ Couldn't tell for sure but it looked like from afar they may be erecting the crane already.

PostJan 14, 2016#74

Crane for new dorm is now up! Multiple erections at SLU!
