Sad but not surprising. It's that kind of mentality that separates us from- and puts us behind- other Rust Belt cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and yes, even Detroit in terms of local corporate investment in their respective downtowns.

I can't believe the concerns over parking and traffic when there are times that I could fire a cannon down most downtown streets and not hit a soul, and if we could park all of Lou Fusz's inventory in downtown's parking garages, there'd be thousands of parking spaces to spare. I also can't believe our civic leaders are in such a desperate need of a reality check.

Has there ever been a forum for downtown residents like what Cleveland is holding...

http://www.cleveland.com/hillcrest/inde ... rt_m-rpt-1

But what will keep the single 20-somethings who moved to the city's epicenter craving the nearby nightlife, major league sports and big city-ambiance, once they have families?

NEOMG Vice President of Content Chris Quinn explains: "When the library folks sat down to talk about a forum downtown, we thought the ideal subject would be to build it around who lives downtown. Not much work has been done to identify who lives downtown and why, and even less has been done, it appears, to figure out what might keep them living downtown a decade from now."

The concerns are more about the location of parking vs amount of available parking. Large companies want their parking to be connected to the building. They don't want to have to walk a block or 2 to get to their office building.

Detroit is showing some downtown retail creativity with The Belt:

Bedrock Real Estate Services LLC and Library Street Collective today unveiled The Belt, an art-filled alley between the two wings of The Z parking garage in downtown Detroit. The alley is decorated with the work of world-renowned street artists and will serve as the home to restaurants and pop-up shops.

While still a parking garage, the Z is pretty cool itself... significant retail and fine (street) art space:

Another example of creative downtown rustbelt retail... Cityloft for holiday shopping:

Somerset Collection's CityLoft — an outpost of the upscale Somerset Collection in Troy — will open in downtown Detroit for holiday shopping on Dec. 3.

Nearly 40 stores from the mall are expected to participate, offering samplings of merchandise at CityLoft's new location, a 6,000-square-foot space in the First National Building, 600 Woodward.

I can see something like this in a number of places downtown.... it could be part of the Union Station holiday experience, but it could also work in any number of spots in the CBD. The M/X could be an option, but perhaps the coolest would be re-opening the ground floor of the old Famous-Barr.

From what I saw yesterday, it was actually an AVIS/Budget rental location.

Yeah, you're right. I'm guessing that the enterprise location on Washington influenced avis to open up downtown

Damn. Why does Detroit get all of the cool ideas? The Famous-Barr main level would be the perfect spot for this, and it would provide an opportunity to decorate the windows for the holidays again. (sigh)

you mean like this?

Six alumni of the Hatch Detroit retail contest are getting grants to improve their relatively nascent businesses, the non-profit announced Thursday.

Detroit Institute of Bagels, La Feria, Detroit Vegan Soul, Busted Bra Shop, Alley Wine and Bumbo’s Restaurant and Bar are all receiving a total of $40,000 in grant money, thanks to a gift from the Detroit Lions.

“We believe strongly in all of the businesses who have competed in the Contest,” Vittoria Katanski, executive director of Hatch Detroit, said in a release. “This funding from the Detroit Lions will give them the support they deserve as they work to open their doors or advance their business.”

Great looking program. Seems a bit like a retail-oriented rallystl.

PostNov 19, 2014#462

^ looking at rallystl, these two interesting ideas for retail reached the selected phase but apparently were not funded...

Saint Louis Retailers Ass'n put forward the Outdoor Retail Incubator

STL-STYLE submitted the Pop Up City STL

It would be great to fine-tune these great ideas and move them forward

Gyros are coming to downtown! To the old Hamilton Jewlers Building.... as expected the Arcade-Wright rehab was mentioned as a plus.

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/blog ... louis.html

The only thing we need now is the Chemical and just about everything will be occupied in the OPO block. wait.... also the restaurant space at the OPO Tower.

*Love* me some Gyro company! Hands-down the best Gyro in town IMO, and no I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

I'm thrilled they're doing well enough to expand, and happy to see they chose downtown.

Here is a bit more on the project.... like ours their downtown isn't ready to support major merchandise retailing, but as the saying goes, Detroit Hustles Harder:

Located on the first floor of the 660 Woodward Avenue building, the collection of around 40 vendors will sell everything from Swarovski Crystals to "Made in Detroit" clothing until Dec. 23 as part of the Quicken Loans 2014 Season of Winter Magic that encompasses Campus Martius Park.

Linda McIntosh, marketing director for the Somerset Collection, said this year, Somerset is sticking around downtown for a longer period of time and will offer a wider selection of goods from more vendors than they've hosted in the past.

She said there will be a few vendors rotating through the pop-up style shop.

The layout, though hosting a slew of familiar names like Aveda, Cache, Lego, Lacoste, Pottery Barn, Ralph Lauren and Paradise Pen, is a throwback of sorts.

"It has the feel of an old-fashioned department store," McIntosh said.

Those who planned the store wanted to give shoppers choices, she said, and the CityLoft will allow holiday shoppers to find gifts priced anywhere from $10 to $1000.

The collection of retailers should help turn Detroit into a destination for those who would typically jet out to Troy, Novi or Livonia to to their holiday shopping.

"We want this to help bring people to the city," McIntosh said. "We want to showcase Detroit on a national level."

Especially with The Collective's demise, something like this would be perfect for next year as part of Holdiday Season downtown programming.

It may not be fair to either of them, but I view Danny Meyer similar to Jack Dorsey. I'll brag on them to outsiders, but amongst "friends" (STL people), I express disappointment.

It wouldn't be hard for these successful STL exports to help to throw their home town a bone, but they just don't seem too interested in it. (Yes, maybe they're investing behind the scenes, but their names mean something. Public actions would do more good.)

I don't remember if I commented on it since I was in NYC in September and got to try Shake Shack. I didn't think it was incredible. I can't believe people stand in those lines for it. I did think it was good. Good frozen treats. Good greasy steak burgers. But it's also definitely the product of good branding and hype.

So at the M/X the Collective and Takaya have closed in recent months but on the positive side the med street food place is slated to open in the spring and the physical therapy opened in the back not long ago.

With the Takaya spot opening, I wonder if you could move Trova over to where the Collective was and use the combined space to open a drug store... could be a great spot for one.

I would think with the National Blues Museum going in across the street, there's going to be a good opportunity for a restaurant.
