Add Ozzie's which mysteriously opened about a mile away from the ballpark, despite the best efforts of the Partnership to get them to reconsider.

A couple of years back I was on a retail advisory committee with the Partnership (store managers, developers, business owners, commercial real estate people). It was a good group, but it hasn't been called to meet probably in two years, so I guess it was disbanded.

The Partnership should be tracking these openings and closings (for good or bad). It is not hard, but I haven't seen it.

Interesting. I never knew this. Has anyone taken the inititive to start meeting again on a regular basis? What caused the group to stop meeting.

Interesting indeed. It's not that I think the Partnership doesn't care. In fact, I believe the opposite is true. The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be much forward momentum or collaboration between it, other agencies, and the city government.

These are just my anecdotal, personal observations. If anyone knows more about what's going on there these days, I'd love to learn more about it. Because when I see these lists of closures, I just feel like we're treading water at best.

Geleteria spot leased in less than 30 days. A lot of competition for the spot. Will be a Mediterranean restaurant.

Two Mediterranean restaurants within 8 blocks from each other?

Who's going into the Gelateria spot?

A fast casual Mediterranean restaurant. Still looking for a storefront for the Gelateria.

Not sure I'm following... So I know about the Mediterranean place going to MX. Initially you stated the Gelateria spot has been leased, is that not the case?

very cool and its great to see the Monkey Building filled up. I see this reality firm is the one that opened up on the second floor of the Hamilton Jewler's building... hopefully something will go into the first floor soon. Still think the rooftop could be a cool bar/venue space but oh well!

Anyone know if anything is in the works for the restaurant spot at Tower @ OPOP? I believe they were hoping to announce something not too long after opening.

Too bad we don't have some of the creativity downtown like some other cities have...
Cleveland already has its small retailer storefront program and now this Small Box project, which is sort of a pop up retail place made of shipping containers that are sited on part of a Warehouse District surface lot.

I doubt the Downtown Partnership has any idea about stuff like this going on in other downtowns.

^ probably so.... this actually may be something good for a rallystl type of project. Looks like Cleveland may be trying to get a couple more to the two that are opening and it looks like from the examples of other cities these types of places are a pretty cool hang-out spot to boot with café seating.

This seems exactly like the type of relatively small thing that could enliven a stretch of Wash Ave.

It's painfully obvious that they have no clue about best practices elsewhere.

What is the partnership even doing? Why don't they host a neighborhood meeting to put together an action plan with decision makers and residents? Are they just a jobs program? I want to see some results.

^ The problem is that the "partnership" is not a true neighborhood association. They are really just a corporate mouthpiece organization. In fact, I have heard rumors that many of the corporate leaders do not want downtown to be a "neighborhood" over concerns over parking and traffic. You would be surprised many of our corporate leaders like the "small, slow, dead town feel".

Is the Partnership trying to be a "true neighborhood association"? I always thought they were just a "corporate mouthpiece organization".

No. DNA is the neighborhood association.

The Partnership for Downtown St. Louis is a planning entity funded by the Community Improvement District (CID). They pretty much payed out Downtown Now! which had many successes.

Notable current PfDTSTL projects: Downtown Trolley; T-Rex ...

The neighborhood org is fairly new and is called St. Louis Downtown Neighborhood Association Inc (DNA). They meet tonight at 7 at Central Library.

DNA's bylaws were somewhat modeled after more advanced neighborhoods across the nation, so they allow for residents, business owners, employees, students & property owners to join.

The idea is, together, we can get things accomplished. We should be able to add police, take on a park project ... get aldermanic support. There are DNA committees that spearhead different ideas brought by the DNA general membership. It's free to join if you qualify (downtown resident, worker, student, business owner, property owner): www.saintlouisDNA.com
