I agree. Most of the lost restaurants were pretty weak concepts, or reiterative, or chains. I used to think the CWE closures were from poor performance however this is becoming an alarming trend and am beginning to think otherwise.

I personally think it is just ridiculous that a TV news station (in this case KSDK) first "breaking story" of the evening rush was to cover a restaurant closing in the CWE. It is nothing more that a slap in the face to STL IMO. Why do they do this crap.
First off, Culpeppers was closed because they lost their lease in the buildings sale to the Chess Museum
Second, 1764 closed because (as the owner said) their company was spread too thin on restaurants and monies - but LOVE (not) the fact that he said the 100 Highrise was to blame too - what? He said it had run over their construction deadline... really??? I didn't know that. It also has absolutely no road closures on the block and didn't hinder a thing with his restaurant. Does everyone have to blame something (usually progress) for their demise? Just pitiful and sad.

^I agree, you get 5 news articles on city restaurant closures (and crime occurrences) and they make them sound "earth shattering/breaking news/city is DYING/DANGEROUS." The media in STL is TERRIBLE, ABSOLUTE TRASH. I lived in KC for several years and many restaurants close, still very high crime, and their news outlets did not cover this stuff as seriously as STL does. I lived in DT KC and someone was knifed to death in my parking garage, not much news on that, or when someone slashed 30 cars tires on my street in Midtown.
I had to text my friends and coworkers about the mass shooting in KC that happened last week when the Cheifs won - none of them had heard of it. If that happened in STL, media would be all over it and people would be even more afraid to step in the city. This is my main frustration when talking to other St. Louisans, many do not know about the good and I particularly blame the media front.

I live in the neighborhood and remember walking down to Euclid/Maryland on an august evening a few years ago and the ambience was perfect: soft lighting and all 4 corner patios full of people eating/chatting with the Chase rising in the distance. I remember thinking it was every bit as happening as any square I had been to in Europe.
Here's my sense (cents). CWE is becoming a victim of its own success. Too much emphasis on high-priced products, larger footprints and luxury concepts catering to the 'wealthy' . Once this obsession has run its course, perhaps there will be another correction with the closure of mall-like stores and the return of more small-format local businesses.

I'd have to guess that the rent on that spot was absolutely ridiculous. Before 1764 moved in, that spot was vacant for at least a decade, right? I feel you here. That intersection was PERFECT. Hopefully a small bar concept with a lot of outdoor seating takes over the small space left by Blue Mercury, because the former Cartel Coffee sidewalk is suddenly huge and empty. Hoping the Chess HOF does something with their sidewalk as well. sad to hear about Guerilla. i ate at the Loop location a couple of times. thought it was pretty good but it didn't really compel me to return, either.
as for Steve's, i ordered a veggie dog there once and it was basically a microwave tofu pup with some condiments on it.
