I actually really like G street food. I need to make it a point to go more often. Randomly it came up at work today.

Man, that's a shame about the TGE GSF - was right down the street from my work so it was super convenient for all of us. Least there's no shortage of good places to eat on Grand, though.
Guerilla in Tower Grove was excellent, it will be missed.
They literally just opened the Webster location. Was there a rent situation in TG? Or did they spread themselves too thin?

That seems to be something that is common in STL: restaurants (and other establishments such as breweries) expanding too fast and collapsing under the weight of all that newly acquired debt. It's a shame and makes me a bit nervous every time I hear about expansion of local chains (i.e. Salt and Smoke).

I think what really did them in was that silly food truck park thing they’re doing in south county.
Nobody’s learned the lesson from Flacos Tacos. On a flight and saw a great article about Balkan Treat Box in Southwest Magazine.
New Italian spot coming to the former Scape space in the CWE.

^ i don't recall anybody saying it's dead. i recall some concern over the loss of several businesses for a single monolithic use of a quarter of its premier intersection. nevertheless, that stretch of Maryland between Euclid and Kingshighway does seem to struggle.
^ I don't think I remember anyone on UrbanSTL saying it's dead...maybe some concern but not dead. KSDK leading off the news one night with an alarmist story about a restaurant closing in the CWE does fit in a bit better with what Harv was saying though lol.
Anyway...a solid St. Louis slate for the James Beard Awards this year:

Michael Gallina of Vicia, Lona Luo of Lona’s Lil Eats, Jesse Mendica of Olive + Oak, and Loryn Nalic of Balkan Treat Box are semifinalists for “Best Chef: Midwest.”
Nathaniel Reid of Nathaniel Reid Bakery is a semifinalist for “Outstanding Baker" nationwide, his second time in that category.
Mai Lee is a semifinalist for “Outstanding Restaurant” and Indo for “Best New Restaurant," both national categories.
Plenty of people on this forum have been singing the "downfall" of the CWE. Someone recently tried to imply that there were an abundance of vacant restaurant spaces along the Euclid vicinity. From what I can count, there are 6 over 2/3 of a mile. 3 of which are recent closures and haven't had time to turn over.
Plus the Business Journal absolutely loves to make lists of recent business closures without mentioning new openings or expansions in the same article.
EDIT: sorry about that, I was thinking of Reddit. Which is pretty embarrassing to say.

All via Reddit: Bread Co at Euclid & Forest Park Ave closed on March 3rd.
Most responses to the post were saying/confirming that they're shifting toward locations with drive-thrus.

Panera is awful anyway. it hasn't been good since, like, the mid oughts when it became a fast food chain.

Surprised they didn’t take the downtown Hortons location when they closed down here, it has a drive thru
Really disappointing that Bread Co. has almost entirely pulled out of the denser neighborhoods. The Chippewa/Lansdowne location is really the only urban one left that I know of, and they were going to close it down before they were allowed to install a drive thru. These location were valuable parts of the streetscape in many of the City's densest retail corridors and they haven't really been replaced after closing. It's hard for me to believe that it is impossible for a bakery/cafe to make money in these same locations.
Apparently taqueria Durango was on fire today. With for going thru the roof. I really liked that place so it was sad to hear.
Update. Found this article. Destroyed. Too bad. I hope they rebuild.

Illustrates that chains in general are not tied to local communities (even local chains once they get large enough and sell out to investors)
The Starbucks on Maryland near Euclid might be the only one without a drive through. Wonder how long till someone in Seattle decides to pull the plug on it
Will continue to support small local business as much as I can,

Downtown Clayton, Wydown and Hanley, downtown STL, the loop, one by Cheshire, and I am guessing others. That’s not counting all the ones inside other stores and businesses.
Starbucks doesn’t seem to mind no drive thrus.
There are 4 full service stores downtown without drive-thrus. And that's not counting places like Union Station that have a counter that serves Starbucks. The midtown location has a drive-thru but I think it could easily get by without it.jshank83 wrote: ↑Mar 06, 2020I think there are a fair amount of other Starbucks without drive Thrus.imran wrote: ↑Mar 06, 2020The Starbucks on Maryland near Euclid might be the only one without a drive through.
