Examining the candidates for the next round of MLS expansion

http://www.espnfc.com/major-league-socc ... -expansion
St. Louis

Dave Peacock has a lot on his plate these days. His primary task is to keep the NFL's St. Louis Rams in St. Louis. That's no easy feat with Rams owner Stan Kroenke threatening to move the team to Southern California and play in a stadium he plans to build in Inglewood, just 10 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

So Peacock, along with the appropriately named Bob Blitz, has been spending his time trying to put together a plan to build a new downtown stadium on St. Louis' riverfront. Part of the sales pitch is to have it house an MLS team in addition to the Rams.

If that sounds like the MLS team is taking a back seat to the Rams, well, it is, although Peacock is of the belief that an MLS expansion side in St. Louis makes sense regardless of what happens with the city's NFL team.

"I think we're first and foremost Rams," Peacock told ESPN FC via telephone. "We want to retain the team. The project that's enabling us to keep the [Rams] creates an opportunity for MLS. I think if something were to fall through -- and I can't imagine that happening -- I think the region could still support an MLS team."

St. Louis has long been one of the nation's soccer hotbeds. It has provided a pipeline of U.S. internationals, a list that includes Frank Borghi, Harry Keough, Taylor Twellman, Steve Ralston and Tim Ream. In terms of market size, St. Louis ranks 21st according to A.C. Nielsen, ahead of MLS cities such as Portland, Kansas City and Salt Lake City. A new USL side, St. Louis FC, has just come online, and drew more than 5,000 fans to each of its first two games.

An NFL-sized stadium, while not ideal, would certainly bring an MLS expansion team closer to reality. Peacock said the initial design of the venue would allow for a downsized configuration that would seat 25,000 fans. The fact that it would also be downtown would no doubt please MLS.

"I think frankly it's hard to sell an NFL stadium for soccer, but I think the way it's being designed could really work for soccer," Peacock said. "I think the crowds we would have in St. Louis would surprise people in numbers. It's at a price point and there's a passion for the support. That combination along with what I would think would likely be good local ownership, managing the team profitably, I think you would have the right combination for a successful franchise here."

The ownership group remains the big unknown. Peacock's relationship with MLS goes back a ways to when he was an executive at Anheuser-Busch, and the company was a charter sponsor of the league. Peacock worked with MLS commissioner Don Garber as far back as 2007, and discussed bringing MLS to St. Louis.

When asked if he would be part of the ownership group, Peacock said, "Maybe." He confirmed that he had met with MLS leaders back in December, and a source told ESPN FC that Garber and MLS will visit with Peacock at the end of this month.

"What we're trying to do is organize a meeting with local leaders -- and that can be business and civic leaders -- with Don and the league to get to know each other," Peacock said. "There's a lot of people here, who because of where we're located don't have as much awareness of [MLS]. Sporting Kansas City has helped, but I think you've got to first have the dialogue."

An MLS franchise would be ideal co-tenants for this new stadium in St. Louis should the Rams stay.

For now, Peacock remains focused on the stadium project, and is confident of succeeding. He said his group has obtained options for more than 60 percent of the required land. Funding remains a work in progress.

St. Louis County declined to provide any dollars, and the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority recently filed a lawsuit against the city of St. Louis in an effort to have the city contribute public funds without having to obtain voter approval. The thinking is that time is of the essence given Kroenke's maneuverings and there's no time for a long election process. Peacock is of the belief that the city and state will kick in the needed funds. He also expects the stadium to be completed around 2019.

All of this assumes that Kroenke -- not to mention other NFL owners who would have to approve any potential move -- agrees to keep the team in St. Louis. In the meantime, discussions with MLS will continue.

"We have some time," Peacock said. "We don't want to act like [an expansion team] is a burning bridge, but at the same time we want to get the dialogue going now because it's a great opportunity and something really additive to our region."

I found the little blurb thrown into yesterday's article about a soccer hall of fame a little curious. For those with good knowledge of professional soccer in the US:

1. Is this site a good one for hall of fame?
2. Does it strengthen a bid for a team by incorporating this into the stadium plan?
3. Do you think this was totally the brain child of the task force or has MLS had any input?

Any other thoughts would be welcomed.

Worst-kept secret becomes a little more public...

Dave Peacock as Major League Soccer owner? ‘Maybe’
http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news ... l?page=all

Dave Peacock said he would be open to being part of an ownership group that would bring Major League Soccer to St. Louis.
That’s according to ESPN, which published a report outlining five cities that seem poised to be part of MLS’ next round of expansion. Those cities include St. Louis, Austin, San Antonio, Sacramento and Indianapolis.
When asked if he would be part of the ownership group, Peacock told ESPN, “Maybe....”

Peackock's motto must be "Go BIG or Go HOME". Heck, maybe he is thinking is along the lines of screw Stan K because I'm going to build my own sports empire.

I think it also telling that San Antonio and or Austin keeps on coming up on NFL and MSL lists. At some point, I think both NFL and MSL wants teams in that part of a growing Texas to balance out the Houston/Dallas market. I still think Raider's move to TX a few years down the road is a good possibility as 49er's slowly take what is left of the Bay area market and or the second franchise team. St. Louis fitting into the mix seems to make a lot more sense with the progress on the stadium proposal and now a ready made museum/hall of fame added to the mix. I would say Peacock is working as many angles as he can.

I can see Oakland putting together a new Oakland A's stadium on the fast track over Raiders since San Jose took another blow on their attempt to poach the team and for all and intents purposes is going nowhere. The baseball stadium being a smaller footprint, half the cost and offering a larger overall game and crowd count for the private development that will be needed to finance any Oakland stadiums because state won't offer any money and Oakland & the owners themselves have no money. In addition, Oakland actually had a local corporate group wanting to buy out the team and build a new stadium next to Jacks London square. You just don't read about any corporate support for Raiders here.

Will the USL even have 24 teams in 2020...these minor leagues tend to fold fast or lose teams because of $ or promotion to MLS

Looks like MLS in Saint Louis s a longer-term venture than hoped, unfortunately.

^ If the decision that was made on the current 4 expansion teams for 2018 would have been made say next year for 2020 things could have been pretty juicy. For a moment it looked like maybe there was some secret sauce behind the scenes for a bold move here but I guess that wasn't to be.

While I don't blame optimism, any hope that we were getting a team prior to 2020 was pretty much always misguided. The upcoming expansion teams were set and there wasn't any reason to believe those would change.

About two weeks ago there was very little hope of the MLS at all. They seemed satisfied to reach 24 teams. But then Garber announced they absolutely planned to expand beyond that.

And we're on the radar for that expansion. We should be VERY happy about that news, not greedy that it's not coming sooner.

In fact, the best news is that Garber pretty well confirmed they'd be willing to play in a football stadium if everything else was in place. That's huge. HUGE.

As a still growing league, he's making the right call not to do too much expansion too quickly. But it looks like St. Louis is legitimately on the radar for the first time since the MLS has had solid footing. And we appear to have the solid footing to match. Whether it's as part of the NFL stadium or as it's own separate soccer stadium if the football stadium falls through (in Peacock's last public comments he revealed this as an option), then St. Louis should be in good shape.

If you read back through my updates - 2020 has been the earliest possible expansion year after the current round - I thought this visit was very encouraging - In fact I would say we would be front runners with Sacramento -

Love the rendering of the new stadium as a soccer venue. This is the next best thing, after a soccer specific venue. Looks way better than I expected. How this photo translates in real life, remains to be seen.

^ I believe Minneapolis stadium financing is tied in part to a development deal of the surrounding area as well as the fact that the state and city made it clear that MSL was not going to be in the same league as the Vikings, Twins and UofM Gophers with their respective stadium deals/state incentives/supporting tax dollars over the last couple of years.

The Twin Cities/Minnesota/Hennipin County have gone crazy with stadium financing:
-$350 million from Hennepin County to pay for 60% of Target Field for the Twins
-$348 million is coming from the state of Minnesota, $150 million from the city of Minneapolis for US Bank Field for the Vikings
-close to $85 million from the state of Minnesota to pay for about 1/2 of Xcel Energy where the Wild play
-the city of Minneapolis is spending $80 million to renovate the Target Center where the Timberwolves play
-the state of Minnesota paid about $150 million for half of TCF Bank stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.

So the Twin Cities have put by my count $1.2 billion in to sports venues over recent years. And now they're being asked to pop $50 million to pay for part of a soccer stadium?

Perhaps they are having second thoughts since STLFC beat them in the US Cup. :D

If anyone caught the next STLFC cup game against Sporting KC in KC they drew a record crowd (by far) for an early round US Cup game, and surpassed the attendance of the US Cup Championship game held in KC a couple of years ago.

With the passion of soccer fans a STL-KC soccer rivalry would be intense. Perhaps more so the Cards-Royals (although that seems to be heating up).

Its been a good week for the beautiful game here in StL - excellent showing of local fans against Sporting in KC, members of the Cauldron (the name - an unfortunate hold over from the Wiz days) said it was the best showing by a traveling supporters group they ever had.

Also StL had the best TV ratings in the country for Women's World Cup over all 3 group stage games.

This bodes well for us - even if the Rams leave - For expansion - The league likes rivalries and Sporting really does not have one right now, and obviously we are willing to watch on TV.

Yeah, the Republic is doing things right - They look really good for the next round of expansion.

Also interesting is the relatively modest numbers for super hip Austin, whose pundits have expounding on what a great market it is... and they have no competition from hockey or baseball to cut into their numbers
