My main problem with the uniforms is that they're so blurry.

I think it's only a controversy if someone disagrees. Those are factually horrible. Seriously, Johnny Mac's could do better.

Is it just a bad photo or soes the blue in the shorts not match the blue in the shirt? And I know sponsors play a big part in keeping the organization solvent - especially as a minor league affiliate - but the team logo is so small as to be indistinguishable at a distance. Which is a problem, as by definition a player out on the pitch is at a distance from pretty much everyone but the other players and refs. I honesty didn't notice the logo at all at first, and I was looking for it.

Love the team. The kits are awful.

EDIT: PS, five models, five different color shoes. As I'm new to the whole soccer thing, are shoes (or at least guidelines for shoe colors) not part of the uniform?

Team logos are never visible in soccer. I dare you to positively identify a Barcelona player when wearing an alternative kit with unfamiliar colors, if you don't know who their sponsor is.

You can wear whatever cleats you want these days. White, black, neon colors, red, brown, etc

Thanks, as I said I'm a soccer neophyte. Unless you count a relatively casual cheering for the old MISL Steamers as a kid. Seems odd as an NHL/MLB/(waning)NFL fan.

I guess it's just preference and this is definitely coming from an outside perspective, but it doesn't seem like much of a uniform if it's not, you know, uniform. But I'm definitely picking at nits and I'll be checking the team out regardless. Have a friend who's a huge soccer fanatic; can't wait to go to a game with him.

I dont understand why US pro leagues are so against jersey sponsorship...its a major money maker.

you have the brand logo on the right and team crest on the left with the sponsor in the middle...this is pretty standard for most euro soccer clubs.

AC Milan

Barcelona FC (few years ago they actually donated .07% of their revenue to UNCIEF and had their logo) see below
Qatar Airways is paying them $39Million a year, and Barca have moved the UNCIEF logo to the back and also donate $2M a year to uncief

Manchester United now has Chevy on its kits
Chevy is paying $560 million over 7 years to Man U

Other teams are cashing in too. Under Armour paid $76 million to help outfit English club Tottenham Hotspur while California chip-maker Intel gave Spanish club Barcelona $25 million to put its name and logo inside the players' uniforms. (The outside was already taken by Qatar Airways and Nike for a combined $89 million a season.)

Dunkin' Donuts and Subway, two iconic U.S. brands, also jumped the pond, signing marketing deal with Liverpool and Boston-based owner John Henry.

For most of them the deals were more about good business than good soccer.

"We did not do it for the free tickets," said Gregory Thumm, president of Bulova, United's "official timekeeping partner."

"We didn't sign up because of the sport. Manchester United's five times bigger than the New York Yankees as far as their global footprint. It's hard to fathom that as an American. But they're hugely popular everywhere.

Lack of familiarity. For popular US sports, only amateur leagues have jersey sponsorship. Pro sports have advertisements.

That's all going to change pretty soon. The NHL will probably be the first team to do it. Other leagues will follow soon after.

As long as it's tasteful, I'm okay with it. And it's also better if the sponsors make some local sense, but that certainly won't always happen.

Just because you plaster a corporate logo on something doesn't mean you sacrifice creativity in the rest of the design.
I would have liked to see something like the AC Milan version with navy and green vertical stripes and the logo crested on the left breast. Or red and blue if getting red in there for Chicago is a must. Then put a yellow and blue fleur de lis on the left breast to complete the flag motif. Could have also done wavy blue stripes on a red background like the flag. Man, so many options better than those duds above.

Ummm we are comparing Our new USLPro team to Billion dollar franchises Barcelona, and ACMilan? I think we might be picking nits. Seriously just go enjoy some soccer. If you don't like the uniform just buy a t-shirt instead.

You know it's bad when the engineer calls you out for picking nits.

If this team is a potential harbinger of higher levels of soccer to come and marketing is apparently a big deal for striking up interest from the casual fan, I would suggest they look the part with a little more flash. The uniform won't stop me from going and enjoying them and success on the field conquers all, it's just a wasted opportunity to wow local soccer fans. Just saying.

Agreed. They were the ones who made the uniforms a big even, not us. If they had just taken the field looking like this, it'd still have been brought up, but probably not harped on.

and the uni'es, pretty uninspired - needs a collar or a stripe or something - The league had a lot of say in them - they kinda look like a place holder... hum...

Is there any particular reason why Saint Louis FC will be out in Soccer Park instead of Midtown? I may be wrong, but it seems to me that playing at Hermann would build up a more rabid base than out in Fenton. Thoughts?

Scott Gallagher who is StL FC parent organisation owns the soccer park - They also put a lot of money into recently - SLU would probably not be crazy about them tearing up Hermann by August and scheduling conflicts in Sept.

its a quick drive off of the highway, close to Kirkwood, Sunset Hills, and Crestwood it will be a good USL venue - also they have the option of expnsion there. Sacramento has already increased the seating of their USL stadium to 10,000 in the second year of existence!

^ ah, makes sense with the ownership interests... I just think having a great in-town experience with bars and marches and metrolink would be cooler.

Something like Detroit City FC located in Midtown would be awesome:

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/2015/ ... /23918189/

They sold out the second half of their 2014 season at Detroit Cass Tech's 3,100-seat stadium and were bursting at the seams with a large standing-room crowd and about 3,400 fans at their final games. Wright expects to sell out all of the team's nine homes game this year, which begin in May. He thinks season-ticket sales will have to end by early March to reserve game-day walk-up tickets...

One of Detroit City's strongest traditions is the raucous quarter-mile walk from Harry's Detroit Bar to Cass Tech.

^ No doubt it is a nice venue and a plus is that it is very convenient to the suburban soccer family demographic, but again I just think a passionate city base would more exciting and allow for some unique community opportunities that I don't think we'll be able to see out at Soccer Park.

Going back to Detroit City FC, I think it shows off what can be done with minor league soccer in an urban environment:

In just a couple years Cass Tech will also be right next to the new Hockey Town and accessbile by street car. However, due to their success. Detroit City FC is looking at possible upgrading and moving to a 7,000 seat stadium in Hamtramck, which could be cool in its own right.

I was watching the Orlando City vs. NYCFC MLS game (battle of the expansion teams) on Sunday. Taylor Twellman and Don Garber were discussing the league in general at halftime. Twellman and Garber mentioned St. Louis at least 3 times. Garber said that STL representatives were at the game. There must be some serious movement on the STL front, with regards to MLS. To be fair, he mentioned Sacramento, San Antonio and Miami. This is encouraging.

^ That was noted in the Twin Cities Biz Journal...

The commissioner of Major League Soccer said he will announce the next expansion team in the next 45 to 60 days. Don Garber was speaking on ESPN Sunday at the MLS season opener in Orlando, where the Orlando City SC became the newest member of the league.

"In the next 45 to 60 days, without a doubt, the next round will be announced," he said. Garber mentioned that people from Sacramento, St. Louis and San Antonio were at the game. He didn't mention Minneapolis, where two groups are vying for a team.

http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/n ... -come.html

Very interesting what may be going on, but with MLS announcing the next expansion team in the next month obviously it will be someone other than Saint Louis.

I would assume that STL will be considered in the round after next, for expansion. Garber did mention the possibility of expansion well beyond the next round.

I wonder if STL FC would be considered as a possibility, to become the STL MLS franchise, assuming they do good this season and beyond. Would Kroenke put his STL Gunners team here, if he is forced to stay here.
