Based on a small sample size- 1 visit- I am a fan of Pappy's and will go back frequently, esp since it's so close.

But why in all this discussion of BBQ in STL there continues to be no mention of Smoki O's on Broadway I don't understand.

Ate here on saturday for lunch. I loved the meat, but was not at all a fan of the sweet potato fries or the potato salad. I had the brisket sandwich and sampled several ribs and the pulled pork sandwich. All very good.

Nice article in RFT this week.

Had the pulled chicken late last week and was wonderful. Pulled pork is next on the list.

All of you sweet potato fries haters are insane. They're like candy! Although, Lester's fries might be better. But pappy's meat is way better than Lester's, so they win.

Edit: fries, not fires.

No one in my group cared for the P. salad or the fries one bit. To each his own I suppose. Meat was terrific.

I didn't get a chance to try the sweet potato fries yet but I know they are hard to pull off well. Usually end up greasy and limp.

The beans were good not great and I loved the slaw. Pulled pork was good and brisket was very good, though not quite Smoki O's good.

Glad to have 'em in the 'hood.

P. salad:

I have to say Pappy's is good, but then again I think Schnucks has the best P salad in town by far. don't even try to bring up Straub's or Gourmet to Go, etc. save it... i'm all about schnucks p salad.

back to pappy's, i need to try the ribs and pulled chicken.

Nice, what was Anna Nicole Smith's interior designer doing there? BTW, I visited a few days back. The meat was terrific. The texas toast should be toasted and not raw IMHO. I'd prefer if the sweet potato fries were more like home fries instead of shoestrings, but too many places serve them raw so no big complaints there. Overall, great stuff.

Went there the other night. Had the pulled pork...outstanding! Smoky, moist, flavorful. The baked beans were great too. I'll be back soon.

I found the baked beans and the slaw to be average, at best. But I thought it was a minor quibble, since that is not what you are really there for.

Very, very, very few places can make memorable baked beans or slaw.

CS .. I find baked beans very memorable for at least a few days

Regarding who has better beans .. seems to be a matter of opinion and as noted, IT'S NOT the main reason you're there.

I think it's fair to say Pappy's is pretty freakin good stuff!

Man, I'd go back just for the fries, but everything else we tried was great too.

We were there yesterday - the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, during a thunderstorm, in a relatively unknown part of town and the place was packed. That's gotta be a good sign for Pappy's. This place seems like the kind of joint that could become an institution.

I like their baked beans so much I order a pulled-pork platter with TWO sides of beans. I skip the 'tater salad and slaw and go straight for a double dose of dem beans. I've never tried the sweet potato fries 'cause I hate sweet potatoes. Sure wish they had straight-up Idaho fries...I might give-up a side of beans for those.

Interesting. I enjoyed the sweet potato fries even they were shoestrings. Crispy, not mushy as the thicker cut ones can be. The cole slaw was well above average too. Now you have me curious about the baked beans. Maybe I'll just get a gallon of baked beans to go? ;) Of course, the bbq'd meat is superb. I felt a little bad for drowning the meat in the usual sauces.... It's kinda like ordering up a fine bourbon and drowning it in ice. Tsk tsk. Except most places don't make spicy ice.
