O/T...So if this untested location can attract unique and successful businesses (including quickly filling spots that had previously failed) why can't other vacant locations downtown be as quick to lease? Are the rents lower, is the location better? Perhaps the city should hire this building leasing coordinator as their new retail guru.
Or maybe it has something to do with organic rather than central-planning-authority growth. Plus SLU has been an untapped source of demand for decades.
That strip and now the LBD have evolved over the past decade or so. I don't quite remember when Eric bought the building on the north side of Olive, but that was a major driver for the immediate area -- that and getting Norty and Moosylvania to take up the remaining space and populate the area with young, hip professionals for about 16 hours a day.
The shift in the center of balance of SLU's campus further east didn't hurt, nor did Harris-Stowe's expansion. And face it, there weren't a whole lot of food places for the AGED crowd either.
Couple that with the inability of Grand Center to grow organically (and to overcome its institutions' parking-lot obsessions) and you've got a nice bootstraps success story.

I work in Grand Center, and I've always been amazed how few restaurants there are in the general Midtown area. Glad to see we're finally getting a few more options. As Bonwich points out, SLU has been underserved for years, so it was only a matter of time.
Steve Raichlen was spotted knockin' back some "Q" at Pappy's before heading out to a book signing and a radio interview.

You don't say. Who was the chubby Polack with him?
P.S. He's always "Steven," never "Steve."

Not sure, amiable fellow and definitely not bashful around a plate of bbq.

I'm really happy to see this place doing so well. The worst meal I've ever had there was still equal to the best meal I've had at other local BBQ joints.
Just went for lunch with some co-workers I can say that the BBQ is fantastic. The place was busy and Mike Emerson was very friendly and chatted with us for many minutes.
FYI, next Thursday the Travel channel will be at Pappy's airing a segment on Man vs. food. Mike didn't mention what time they will be there however. He's said that word has spread far and he has a lot of people in from NYC all the time.

Pappy's is closed for a few days for "remodeling." Anyone know when they'll be back up and running...
Where'd you get "remodeling"?
From the Pappy's website:
"To allow our team at Pappy's a chance to enjoy the Holiday Season with their families, Pappy's will be closed from 4pm Dec. 24th until 11am Jan. 2nd."

Host of Mizzou game party tonight tried to get them to cater. he told me "remodeling interior." I don't like the word "remodeling." Nice to hear they're letting them off, very nice. Having some Hodaks instead.

They are actually doing both. They are giving the staff a vacation and doing a bunch of work that they can't get done when they are open.

We were going to take my mother to Pappy's while she was in town for the holidays, so I'm glad I checked the website to get their phone number so I found out they were closed before I drove there.
It also makes sense to shut down for the holidays when there isn't as much traffic from SLU or lunchtime traffic since so many people take vacation during this stretch anyway. But now I'm craving the stuff, so I'll have to drop in some time next week!

Saw this on the Huffington Post...
Zagat's #1 BBQ Joint in the US. Also getting respect of the readers, #2 in reader voting out of the top 10.

Oops.
Exhibit A as to why "aggregator" sites like HuffPost can be really dangerous. (And another example of why 9 out of 10 "top ten" lists are very silly.)

I was a little skeptical. Not that I don't think Pappy's is good, but Arthur Bryant's is insane crazy sweet.
This place is really building a national reputation. We recently took a vacation for our 10th anniversary, and along the way I ran into a Barbadian gentleman who's currently living in New York. When I mentioned I was from Saint Louis, his eyes got big and he said 'I *will* be going to Saint Louis soon, because I've got to try that Pappy's Smokehouse'.

Looks like the restaurant is going up for sale.
Super Smokers collapsed after a private dispute between the owners, right?
Looks like similar issues have carried over to Pappy's. What a shame.

Hopefully they can negotiate a resolution as opposed to putting it on the auction block.
Little birdies in my ear tell me of a new restaurant from one of the owners of Pappy's near Watson and Southwest. I would assume the impetus for that is connected to the current problems. More details soon.
I'd prefer Pappy's at Watson and Southwest. Walking distance from my house.
That said, sad if they fail due to silliness with partners. Ugh.

Sounds more like a potential relocation than anything. When I think of Pappies I don't really think of Midtown Alley developer, Mark Wegmann. I think of the bbq dudes! Wonder what the problem was?jmstokes wrote:I'd prefer Pappy's at Watson and Southwest. Walking distance from my house.
