Or maybe not. It's possible this is the type of act they are aiming for. In my experience, crappy cover bands out draw "quality acts".

Yeah, that sounds really plausible, CS. The owners went through all of the trouble of saving a collapsing structure and building a historic looking addition just so they can book Jimmy Buffet and Sammy Hagar cover bands every night. That's what they meant when they said they want it to be like a Mississippi Nights meets Annie Gunns. I heard they will take care of the Annie Gunns part by serving White Castle burgers and cheesesteaks.

Helen Fitzgeralds books crappy cover bands, and I know they make a hell of a lot more money than BB's, for example.

Only time will tell.

I have to take issue with this solely on the idea that you would even call the Smash Band crappy. That is a put down to all crappy bands.

Helen's also can hold a lot more people than BB's. BB's is more Jazz and Blues.

Other than the Sessions Big Band, I don't know of any jazz played at BB's.

If people go to Soulard looking for this place they are going to end up confused and lost. I don't think it is in Soulard at all, but rather in LaSalle Park (or what is left of it). However, I hope they try to associate themselves more with Soulard and less with the Stadium, though I think they are probably going to cater primarily to stadium patrons during baseball season. Exhibit A: Smash Band. Once again, I thought there was a city ordinance that prevented them from playing outside of Kiener Plaza? On an interesting side note, The Rock House may be the first bar to open in Lasalle Park in decades. They should be proud of that. Maybe someday we will have an entertainment district stretching up Broadway north from Soulard all the way to the stadium. If they would ever get rid of that f-ing sea of surface parking.

The article a couple of weeks ago in the PD about the local Blues scene was only the tip of the iceberg. It seems that fewer and fewer locals like jazz and the Blues. If I owned the Rock House, I really wouldn't know what type of music to book.

Things are very hectic today as they are doing a soft opening for friends and family starting tonight. But shot a few quick pics of the current progress.

Reminds me of Lucas School House. Very nice blend of modern and historic.

Looks like a nice place. Definitely not a hoosier bar.

Wow, looks like a serious music venue with that sound board. Interior looks great, I agree with the Lucas School House comparison. Very nice.

This place is upscale but not pretentious. I see all walks of life here from the biker crowd to the professionals. You gotta check the place out to see all the extra steps they have done. Definitely a cut above the norm. And free Wi-Fi to boot!

went tuesday night. very cool place. VERY smoky, I hope they get some smokeaters/exhaust systems. This will be a destination, but I wish it was a little closer to the stadium, but definitely still walkable.

I thought this place was non-smoking for some reason. Obviously, I have it mixed up with someplace else.

I remember hearing news of a smoke-free venue opening in Soulard. I always assumed this was it.

Lucas School House is smoke free.

Does this place have a website? [oops, found it earlier in thread]

Looks nice, but I doubt I'd ever go there for the music... Groovethang? Dr. Zhivegas? Madahoochi? 360Smile? Those are bands that I would actually make an effort to avoid...

I'd give them some time to book better acts.

I went there on Friday for a few beers - great place. They have a nice patio overlooking downtown as well.

Was it smokey, as mentioned earlier?

Not when I was there - they had windows and doors open, so there was really good ventilation. If it had been closed up, it might have been different.
