Sorry, Matt, but just to clarify for those of us too lazy to look back through this whole thread...

Is 14th going to be re-opened to auto traffic?

The street will once again go through. That is what the current work will do. Once the street and sidewalks are in the project will be completed.

PostMar 29, 2010#329

The first section of concrete will be poured tomorrow morning. RV Wagner has been working really fast Saturday and today. Most of the major demo is completed on the main street area.

What a beautiful block. Everyone involved did an absolutely tremendous job. What's the outlook on tenants?

^There are 4 tenants signed in addition to the ONSLRG office. Interest has been strong, but most have been afraid to sign until the street and sidewalks are in. On the residential side, the units that are accessible from rear doors are occupied, and the remaining front only access units will be available as soon as there is a sidewalk connection.

Matt - can we get a few words on "next steps" - at least in your mind, what do you see happening in ONSL next? New infill? Further rehab spreading out from 14th Street? Mullanphy?

RV Wagner has been making good progress so far. Most of the main sidewalk has been poured. Curb layout and the corner bulbouts will be starting soon. RV Wagner expects to have all of the curb and most of the sidewalk done by the end of the month so that it is mostly completed in time for the annual Old North St. Louis House Tour on May 8. I'll try to get some pics up a little later today.

Kaid Benfield again makes note of the progress on Crown Square and in Old North as a whole.

On a related note, Crown Square was one of the winners of the 2010 Most Enhanced Awards given out by Landmarks Association Friday night. And a small correction to what Kaid Benfield wriote, we actually have five Most Enhanced Award winning projects in the neighborhood, and we are working on a couple more right now.

For the curious, much of the new sidewalk is in place now, and new streetlights will start going in soon. They will not be the standard cobra heads, more of a modern fixture instead. I don't have a pic handy of what they will look like, but I will get one up as soon as the first ones arrive. The first layer of asphalt could be on the street as early as the end of this week, but full completion is not expected until mid-June.

I will try to get some updated pics up here soon if my schedule allows, but if you are really curios to see what is going on, come on by and walk up the east side sidewalk and check out the before and after pictures of all the buildings that are on display in the Old North Gallery that is connected to the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group Office.

High hopes for Crown Square in Old North St. Louis as official opening nears

June 17, 2010 - The ribbon cutting for Crown Square, the $35 million redevelopment of the old pedestrian mall in North St. Louis is scheduled on July 29 2010. Those two blocks of North 14th will be reopened to vehicular traffic for the first time in 33 years. (Laurie Skrivan/P-D)

The regular lunch crowd waiting to enter Crown Candy Kitchen at North 14th Street and St. Louis Avenue may soon find another reason to visit the block.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for July 29 to launch the fully renovated Crown Square, a residential and commercial development in the 2600 and 2700 blocks of North 14th.

I walked through the square last weekend during a bike ride and Crown Candy visit. The storefronts all look nice. The streetlights still aren't here, but the bases are all installed. Some street paving has been done, but it isn't finished.

^I'll be there! Great idea!

PostJul 20, 2010#340

Just a reminder, the Ribbon Cutting ceremony is still scheduled for July 29, at 4:00 pm. The Mayor and other officials will be there to help us celebrate. Trees are in the ground, trash cans or bolted down, and more asphalt will be going down this week. The only flaw in the plans is that the street lights are back ordered, so they may not be installed in time.

As of about Noon today, 14th St. is paved and ready for a party! Unfortunately, the street lights are still in pieces in a factory in North Carolina, but everything else is ready to go. More info and pics of the street can be found on the ONSL Blog here, here, and here. Hope to see lot's of you there. Remember, even if you can't make the formal ribbon cutting, the street party runs until 8:00 pm. There will be some food, snow cones, and even some beer, plus entertainment and the commercial tenants that have leases signed will be present to show off their spaces that will be opening imminently. Be sure to check out the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group Office, which has before and after pictures of every building in the project on display and a small community history museum. Plus, it's just a pretty cool office space.

What kind of lights were selected?

I am totally psyched about the opening of the street! It's been a long wait, but the work to get there has been incredible and paid off entirely. Congrats to all involved and to Old North St. Louis's becoming an even more livable place!

They are almost identical fixtures to the ones around Cupple's Station. They have a different pole though.

Give me a couple days to recover. We have had two ribbon cutting for different projects in only 12 days time. There's a lot going on in Old North.

'twas a very nice event yesterday... i look forward to coming back and seeing the continued progress being made.

One think I think that is unfortunate about 14th St. is that a newer housing development of some sort a few blocks south blocks a straight shot to downtown.... it would be great at some future time to have a streetcar run down 14th from Crown Square straight down to Washington and then east over to the Alex Ihnen Memorial Drive.
