(Ha!! I could not type that with a straight face.)
I know, I know, but the XFL just seems so different. Every city has an MLS team haha. But the MLS team is a way bigger deal

I wouldn’t call the MLS or XFL “major league” at this point. MLS is a step below the big boys (including NHL) and this iteration of the XFL has yet to play a single game.

^^^^ You're going to want to be at the MLS one, that's the historic one.  No one knows whether or not Vince McMahon's latest gimmick is going to succeed.

Just because I was curious, this is what FIFA says about stadium pitch orientation:
Page 35 - Playing field orientation Great care must be taken regarding the angle of the playing field in relation to the sun and the prevailing weather conditions. Match participants, spectators and media representatives must be protected as much as possible from the glare of the sun. However, the effect of a stadium’s roof on the playing field must also be considered. When there is a natural grass pitch, it is critical that there is enough light and air movement to sustain the healthy growth of grass. All sides of the playing field must receive a reasonable amount of direct sunlight. A north-south field orientation is often considered ideal but more sophisticated analysis has led stadium designers to choose an angle equal to the average direction of the sun at half time in an afternoon game.
FIFA - Football Stadiums Technical recommendations and requirements (pdf)

If I'm reading their little diagram correctly, that angle would be around 10 to 15 degrees for 38 degree N latitude, so the ideal orientation in St. Louis would be 10 to 15 degrees west of due north, i.e. goals at North and South ends, with the pitch rotated counter-clockwise a bit.

BenFred: MLS is coming, but what will the St. Louis team be called?

Ben Frederickson is a sports columnist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. You can follow him on Twitter (Ben_Fred), Instagram (benfredpd) and

You share your suggestion, hoping the faces around you light up.
"That's it!" you want to hear.
Instead you usually get something along the lines of, "OK, but what about this one?"

The soccer name game is all the rage. It's dominating sports radio discussion. It's bubbling at the work water cooler. It's no different here at the newspaper. "The T-Ravs. The Real Provels. The Arch Supporters," read an email I received from the P-D features department.
I figured food writer Dan Neman was behind the movement, but it was columnist Aisha Sultan who came to the defense of the list that may or may not have had something to do with the nearing lunch hour.

A team name, I countered, should inspire fear in opponents, not hunger pains.
"Names are to draw audiences ready to pay for overpriced food!" Sultan responded.
She was mostly kidding.

I do think some would celebrate a name that honored toasted ravs, though. And I'm all for a nod to the Arch. What do I know?
Just that Tuesday's announcement of St. Louis landing an MLS expansion team is not expected to include a reveal of a team name. MLS commissioner Don Garber will be there, the league confirmed Monday. A team name will not be there.

Now, does that mean that the name is still being decided, or does it mean the decided name is simply being kept secret?
We'll know more about that Tuesday, when the league plants its expansion flag. Until the ownership group plants a flag in a team name, we will debate.

OK, but what about this one?
Here's my working list so far:
St. Louis City: MLS was determined to be downtown. The new stadium is part of a continued effort to revitalize the area. Just ignore the fact that Orlando is named Orlando City FC. And drop the FC altogether. On the other hand, the county crowd might bristle at the name.

St. Louis United: I like this one a lot, but would not bet the mortgage on it. The league already has three teams named United.
St. Louis Flood: A bit grim, considering it's a real threat around here, but it's regionally relevant. Hey, it worked for the San Jose Earthquake.
St. Louis Kings: Also regionally relevant. The city was named after King Louis IX. His statue at Art Hill has been an iconic image of the city since 1906. One concern: The trend of dismantling statues and shedding a brighter light on history might not be so kind to this name. Kings were not known for their tolerance, King Louis IX included.
St. Louis Archers: The Arch only offends people who are afraid of heights. I like Arch City FC more, but you have to have St. Louis in the name, right?
St. Louis Stengers: It's current. It's a layup for a mascot (hornet) and color (bright orange).
St. Louis FC: If it ain't broke ...

I'm assuming you meant Stingers and not Stengers.  The mascot for the former could be a hornet, the latter could be a corrupt politician who curses like a sailor and hangs out in his office and plays video games.

Copied/pasted article, I double-checked "Stengers" is in the article.

I would love to be at both but now I'm going to have to choose which teams history I want to be a part of, and I can't make up my mind. If we want to be a productive region, and something as important as two major league sports teams announcing their teams in STL in the SAME year is happening, we have to coordinate better
Both organizations are getting a fair amount of pushback about this.

I think I'd love to see 'Saint Louis City Soccer Club.' It's Major League Soccer, not Major League Football, and I want the "City" part thrown in.

I will be disappointed if the team goes with a traditional American sports name, like Flood or Kings or Archers.

River City SC, Brick City SC, Arch City SC, or an FC variation of all of the above would work for me, too.

I'm coming around to St. Louis City SC or FC.  Kind of like Manchester City.  Nickname could be Lou City

I’ve heard St. Louis Legends tossed around. I’d expound on that and call them the St. Louis Legacy.

Just go full heel and pick the St. Louis Rams.  Yeah, you'd get sued immediately by Kroenke, but what better way to drive an initial marketing campaign.

Regardless of the name, I have always liked the St. Louis United/SLSG logo with the St. Louis (Art Hill) statue in it. That is an awesome logo and should be used. The Fleur De Lis could also be incorporated in a more prominent manner in the new logo. I am very much against any name without St. Louis. I am more for an FC, AC, SC or United name, versus Brick City, Legacy or anything such as that. I think the “Legacy” is sort of arrogant and too much in line with the ‘Best Fans in Baseball”  thing. While I get it, not a fan. Bringing back AC St. Louis would be cool, but for some reason, STL United sticks for me, with the SLSG logo. I would be OK with the Steamers, but I think that takes away from the MISL legacy and history. Steamboats might be OK. I also like a name that recognizes our history in the aviation industry, such as Jets, Sprits or something like that. I like the St. Louis City FC name, but you know some County-Folk will be offended.

Spirits isn't bad, Winnipeg may have something to say about the Jets though.

I also like St. Louis City FC.  Screw the County folks, the stadium and team is in the City.

Since they say we can't use my favorite name for the MLS team - Olympique - already used by several French teams, my next 4 choices stolen from current French teams are:

1) Racing de Saint Louis, or Racing Club St. Louis
2) Club Sportive St. Louis
3) Entente St. Louis
4) Sports Réunis Saint Louis

I had to look up Entente and Réunis -- they both essentially are another way to say United as I understand.

If they are going to name the team after a regional disaster, they should call it the St. Louis Blight.  This would be doubly apropos, as the stadium will be sited within an officially-designated blighted area.  Or another regional disaster, but one which also ties into the United and Stenger themes...the St. Louis Better Together!

I am kind of partial to the St. Louis Stags though...
