I think he's referring to the Dave Bailey joint. His other establishment in Lafayette Square is called "Bailey's Chocolate Bar."DeBaliviere wrote:lamiaposta wrote:I hear the proposed chocolate cafe will have a complete espresso menu and lots of comfortable seating.
Is the chocolate cafe Cioccolato from Union Station? There was talk of them moving to the OPO neighborhood.
?
Are you saying Dave B. might be opening up another location... 1.5 miles away? Or is this a completly new "Chocolate Bar?"

I wasn't sure if the Bailey place and the chocolate place were the same. I was under the impression that the chocolate place was going in the Syndicate, but I might have just read too much into whatever it was I read.
Here's what we do know:
Dave Bailey, owner of Rooster in downtown St. Louis, plans to open a 6,800 square foot acoustic music venue in the basement level of the Lofts at 315 Building (adjacent to Left Bank Books). More information coming soon.
Heh, Dave Bailey is opening up a new music establishment. I assume there will be food and drink. I think the person who mentioned "chocolate cafe" earlier was presupposing.zink wrote:?

Looks like chocolate cafe in the Syndicate, Bailey's place in Left Bank building across the street.
The retail mix lined up for the Syndicate includes a quick casual restaurant, a sports-themed restaurant and a chocolate cafe, Heller said.
In addition to Left Bank Books, a wine bar and a music venue also are in the works for his building, Heller said.
This is all rather premature as there are no leases signed as of yet. So if you are a customer of left bank books please let them know you live downtown and would shop in their new store. If you've never shopped in their CWE store, make an effort to get in there and tell them you are excited to hear they may be opening another store downtown.

Ok, just to clear this up a little bit. Left Bank is going in the 315 Building, Baily is opening a music venue in the basement and not a chocolate bar, the chocolate lounge/boutique is going in the Syndicate Building and is unrelated to Bailey and not similiar in style to Baileys Chocolate Bar. Chic, itimate and quiet and more on the order of a European Store/cafe that will offer imported chocolates from Europe as well as gelato, retail wine, specialized liqours and desserts for adults. More in the style of Bissingers new place in the CWE but slghtly different.

It's official http://www.publishersweekly.com/article ... 1255425118. They plan to be open downtown in time for the holiday shopping season.

Great news, but this kind of stuff ticks me off:
W T F. Why do we have to pander to tourists and conventioneers, why not a focus on DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS. Come on, people. I'm tired of seeing business with incredibly limited hours and watered down retail selections simply because they're downtown. Get with the program. Go visit a real city and see how they do it.
The store also will be called Left Bank Books and will carry the same selection of books and sidelines as the Central West End store, “with more of a focus on tourists and conventioneers,”

Did you read this part of the article closely?
The store also will be called Left Bank Books and will carry the SAME SELECTION of books and sidelines as the Central West End store, “with more of a focus on tourists and conventioneers,” Kleindienst said. “And we’ll have events there to draw in the growing RESIDENTIAL population downtown we’ll be serving.”
So basically they are continuing their same focus but will be adding a new component to try and tap into the travel and tourism market that does not exist in the CWE. Very smart on their part.

Poor you.
Why don't you move to a "real city?"

This shows that retail downtown is still at a very tenuous position. Thank God that Heller is wiling to carry them for the first 3 years. Why can't the city do a similar deal in some of their parking garages? I would love to see retail incubators placed in street level space to facilitate more independent stores.
That's a really great idea--wonder who you'd have to talk to to make that happen?

Left Bank Books plans new downtown store by Thanksgiving
By Jane Henderson
Post-Dispatch Book Editor
The rumors are true: Left Bank Books will open a new downtown store, hoping to appeal to convention-goers, office workers and loft residents.
It will be at 10th Street and Locust - officially 321 North 10th Street, says one of Left Bank’s owners, Kris Kleindienst. “It was an offer we couldn’t refuse. … Craig Heller asked us to open and run this store; he’s paying us to manage it.”
Heller is a real estate developer (Loftworks, Inc.) who lives downtown and who, Kleindienst says, believes a bookstore will be good “bait” for other store owners. He’s underwriting the store for three years, but Left Bank may agree to buy the space at any time.
As I left my building this morning (the Syndicate), I saw the large signs in the window at 315 Washington that must have just been put up late yesterday -- Left Bank Books is coming! Yipeeee!

I was at the CWE store at lunch, and the person working there said they expect to have the new store open by middle of November. Very exciting!
According to store sources... new downtown store is set on schedule to open prior to Thanksgiving. Just and FYI.

It looks like the space is pretty much ready to go. I can't wait for them to start moving their inventory in so that it looks "official." I'm really excited about this one.

I walked by the other day and didn't get the impression the space is "pretty much ready to go" at all. It didn't look as though much of anything was going on inside. I hope it opens before Thanksgiving but I'm not optimistic.
I went by today, and workers were inside moving tall panels of ... something (drywall?) about. So there's definitely activity.
