Oh Wendy's, there are literally thousands of fast food joints where I should eat instead, but I am 72 percent sure that I love you.

I didn't like them. I had one shortly before they all closed down. The Wendy's I was at was out of regular frosties so we got vanilla frosties. They were not very good at all.

I walked by the Wendy's today during my lunch hour, and there were a couple construction guys opening the door, and I got a peer in, since the windows are papered up....The entire place is pretty much gutted from what I can see.

Sorry, though, that I didn't get the chance to ask one of the dudes what's going in there.

STL based Hardees will ighlight this space well. They advertise like crazy at Busch and their HQ are downtown.

Good news for this prime visible space on the mall area.

Downtown Wendy's will reopen as a Hardee's/Red Burrito

By Gail Appleson

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

03/06/2007

One of the 51 Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburger restaurants that closed last year in the metropolitan area will reopen next month in downtown St. Louis, but it will be converted to a Hardee's.

The Hardee's-to-be is located at 601 Chestnut Street, near Busch Stadium, and the chain hopes to open it by April 1, the date of the Cardinals' home opener.

The restaurant, with 3,584 square feet, will be dual branded as Hardee's and Red Burrito and will employ 40 to 50 employees. The store tentatively is scheduled to be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

St. Louis-based Hardee's looked at other Wendy's locations, but as of now is interested only in the downtown spot, a spokesman said. The chain is a subsidiary of CKE Restaurants Inc. of Carpinteria, Calif., which also owns Carl's Jr. restaurants.

The Chestnut Street site became available when WenAmerica of Chesterfield, which operated Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburger restaurants in eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois, went bankrupt. Wendy's International of Dublin, Ohio, yanked the franchise agreement and the 51 restaurants were closed, causing almost 1,000 employees to lose their jobs.

It is unclear what caused WenAmerica's financial problems, and the bankruptcy trustee appointed in the case has hired an accountant to investigate its bank records. Assets from the operation are being liquidated, and leased property has been returned to landlords.

Wendy's International did not return calls seeking information about its restaurants in the St. Louis area.

At least it looks like it will get some evening hours and not roll the doors up at 2pm like other downtown fast food. Plus being a combo Hardees/Red Burrito is cool.

Why can't we get a McDonald's instead? We need a drive thru as well. That is what will attract people from the County.

Everyone forgets the one on Tucker. But it's north of the magic line that's Washington Ave so people get skittish.

A McD somewhere in the CBD or south side of downtown would be nice.

On a recent trip to San Francisco, I noticed Carl's Jr./Green Burrito. Hardee's/Red Buritto must be the Midwest/Eastern version? I guess that means they will sell hamburgers and burritos.

There's no web site for Red Burrito, but there is one for Green Burrito - I can't imagine them being that much different:

Every time I am on Tucker I feel I am about to be robbed. How then can I afford my supersized Big Mac? What we need is Ronald McDonald in a police uniform walking the beat. Then people will feel safe. It's all about perception.

When I was a kid, there actually was a McDonald Land cop - Big Mac. He was Mayor McCheese's righthand man and wasn't afraid to crack some skulls when necessary. Never did catch Hamburglar though.

No soft opening this week. First day of business will be Sunday April 1st: same day as the Cardinal home opener.

Looks pretty nice on the inside for a fast food burger place. I'm sure the Monday lunch will be a zoo.

Maybe the SLPD should hire him then. He may not have caught the hamburglar, but at least he stopped him from stealing Ronald McDonald's car from getting jacked.

Looks like they were doing a dry run tonight. Place was full but they had a sign on the door saying "Private Event".

Yeah, but it would be a dead giveaway when him and his cop buddies jack some Cardinals tickets from scalpers.
