Is it his practice to frisk all of his customers?

Yeah, as long as you haven't lost complete faith in the police.jcity wrote:Can someone please explain why there are/were protests in shaw again? Man shot at cop, cop fires back and kills criminal. Perfectly legal. End of story. I wouldn't care if the criminal was, white, Asian, black etc. don't shoot at police. Pretty basic.

The lawyers met with the police department’s medical examiner Dr. Michael Graham, who said Myers’ DNA does not appear on the gun that he was allegedly carrying.
“If he had been carrying the gun, it would have had his DNA,” Wooten said.

The line where he states he doesn't think Meyers had a gun is sure to inspire some hateful comments from the usual STL Today trolls, but people should keep in mind if this guy knew Meyers and had a good shopkeeper/customer relationship with him it's probably hard for him to hear what actually happened.
I used to live two blocks from here. I remember stopping in there in a pinch to get hot dog buns for a BBQ. It still looked pretty ghetto from the outside but they were really nice. Glad to see they have made some improvements and are reaching out to the neighborhood.
I may have to have some of that Wed. night Eritrean food. It sounds amazing!

I see where there were riots, looting and two people shot and one stabbed in San Francisco overnight after the Giants won the World Series.
Somehow disturbances like this And the pumpkin festival riot in New Hampshire are just shrugged off as "boys will be boys".
But unrest over more serious issues is seen as complete lawlessness.

^ its more about who is doing it and if its perceived as being a threat to the current power structure.

We're also talking about one night of lawlessness versus twelve weeks of protests. Yes, some nights have been calmer than others, but there have been many restless nights in this region since August 9.southsidepride wrote:I see where there were riots, looting and two people shot and one stabbed in San Francisco overnight after the Giants won the World Series.

As I said before, I am quite concerned about the issues of racial profiling, police brutality, and whether the Balkanized government structure in North County does its residents more harm than good. However, I also believe in due process, the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and I think the ongoing unrest simply divides the community further.
I'm not excusing the 'celebration' in San Francisco by any means, but why do I get the feeling if the Cardinals would have won the World Series this year, the celebrations wouldn't have been nearly as peaceful as they were in the past?
Seems like the announcement is going down soon. Apparently many places sending out emails about safety procedures (including WUSTL, see here), and maybe most tellingly, cold front's bringing temps in 30s/lower pretty much all next week. Plus with all the leaks in the last couple weeks...

Acrtually, if you follow #ferguson on twitter its going down in a few hours. Reports of national guard copters, and pictures of police begining to assemble in parking lots etc. Even reports of a large corp sending people home now. Could all be false but twitter is waking up this afternoon so who knows
Wouldn't surprise me. It's obviously imminent. Would make more sense to me to do it when the temp plunges, though.
edit--but also after looking, a lot of that sh*t flying around on Twitter right now seems like typical baseless rumors.

Walking past the big police lot across from the new city police HQ this afternoon, it sure seems like there's more activity than normal. More police pretty much everywhere in the vicinity. But it could be nothing.

I saw with my own eyes groups of four AH-64s flying northeast over Parkway South High this afternoon. Could be for the veterans parade, could be something else.

Well, if what I heard on KSDK this morning is correct, McCulloch's office confirmed that the grand jury is still hearing evidence and that a decision won't be revealed until next week at the earliest.
Oh, goody. I am ready to get this over with once and for all, the sooner the better in my opinion. Three months of 'Hands up, don't shoot!' have gotten this city nowhere fast. It's time to flush out the troublemakers. As for the peaceful protesters, I daresay it's time for them to get out of the streets once and for all and look for ways to make constructive progress toward the legitimate issues (racial profiling, police/community relations, and the patchwork of fiefdoms that exist solely because of traffic ticket revenue) that were raised in the aftermath of recent officer-related shootings.

A long but good read on the role housing policies played in shaping our region. For a book about all this read Mapping Decline by Colin Gordon.

Am I the only one that thinks the reaction to the Grand Jury announcement is going to be far less of a big deal than is currently being predicted?
It just seems everyone is just so freakin certain it's gonna be Armageddon that even positing the idea that we may not have massive riots is akin to saying the world is flat.

No, I absolutely agree. I'm sure there'll be some kind of unrest but I doubt it'll match the hype and hysteria that's been generated in the past few weeks. I think it ties into this innate human desire to see the sh*t hit the fan in a spectacular way. To say you were there or watched on TV when it happened and all that...
It reminds me of when people thought places would explode in violence after the Trayvon Martin verdict and nothing happened. Or when people thought that "Do the Right Thing" would cause rioting and nothing happened. Obviously this is a bigger deal than a movie and is more charged than the Martin case due to the underlying issues of the region/the cop aspect, but still...
I'm expecting something, but nothing apocalyptic.

Yeah I think you might be right.
I think there's a minority that really want the worst to happen to justify their bigotry, but most aren't really hoping to see complete mayhem.
Then you have the right wing bloggers and talkradio hosts who may not want riots to occur, but since gun shops and other related businesses are sponsors, make money from the fear that it could.
And of course, local TV news which will make any skirmishes look bigger than they are for ratings

Won't be as bad as the 10'days after when it comes to violence and looting. Also this time law enforcement is better prepared
I hope they release the news on Saturday or Sunday when the highs are 35 and 40, respectively. 23/21 is the low with possible snow Saturday. Way too cold for looters and people to cause mayhem. Like 314 said, I'd like to see the protesters direct their anger into meaningful change:
-consolidation of any police departments with city populations below 15,000 people
-only a certain maximum revenue from traffic tickets per city
-reduced fees or offer other payment plans for people that can't pay tickets.
-mandatory cameras on police and their cars
Let's work towards goals like this. Protesting and possibly rioting in clayton and ferguson after they layout reasons for Wilson to defend himself from a more than likely criminal attack doesn't win the minds of 90% of the region. Let's actually do things to make lives better for most African Americans in St. Louis. Let's actually change things for the better.

These are excellent goals. I hope Stenger and others are working toward doing them. Also, since Eric Holder and the Justice department are monitoring the Grand Jury proceedings, he should tell us up front if the process was fair or not, rather than stay silent.jcity wrote:I hope they release the news on Saturday or Sunday when the highs are 35 and 40, respectively. 23/21 is the low with possible snow Saturday. I'm kinda dubious that any thing of substance will come of this which really sucks...I DON'T think there will be mass hysteria, because to be honest Black people expected this result from the beginning. I talked to Tef Poe like the week it happened and he predicted exactly what's happened. They'll wait and drop the verdict when it gets cold and some tempers will have calmed.
I think what we'll have left is things going back to how they were/have been for the past 50 years or so...just an uneasy "truce" between the races to be honest. While I don't think anything bad will come of this, well more than what we've already gotten to be honest. The city has taken a BEATING in terms of PR, we look BAD nationally...but I don't see anything good happening either. I just don't have any faith in the political leadership of the region...and I don't have any faith in the protestors because to be honest, outside of a Darren Wilson conviction (which they were never going to get under any circumstances) I don't even know what it is exactly that they want.
