Hmmm, investing minimal amounts of cash into guys that will be equal of Jason Marquis, Ted Lilly, Rich Hill and Mark Prior. Lilly for $10 million? Or Reyes for $350K? Jason Marquis for $8 million? Or Kip Wells for $4 million? Rich Hill or Adam Wainwright? Mark Prior could be one of the great pitchers in baseball, but his head (or mouth), and body don't seem to cooperate.

While I don't love what the Cards did this offseason...I would rather do what they did and not pay average pitchers oodles of cash, instead giving opportunities to younger guys. If Wainwright is able to start the entire season (c'mon, Izzy...stay healthy), then he'll be a viable #2. And I think Kip Wells is gonna be pretty freakin' good this year.

well, since we're talking about the birds this season. There are still rumbl'ings about the birds landing another starter via trade b4 the season begins.

Also, keep in mind that Mulder did win more games than any other pitcher the last 4 or so years. So IF he returns to his previous form, having a dominant lefty to back up Carp doesn't look too bad. Our lineup should be improved over last year as well.

I hear you on giving the younger guys a shot, but lets all look at the economics of the game:

The price of pitching will never decrease. It is a scarce resource and will always be contested.

The term "inflated market" created by walt and others is an awesome PR/marketing tool for all of us to chew on..."Yeah, he's not worth it, he's a .500 middle starter..."

There is only one market, it's the one that exists, and it isn't trending down.

In the meantime I like the use of young cheap guys and rehabs (St. Louis LOVES rehabs) like Kip Wells. But eventually, despite the coup of the century, aka Chris Carpenter's contract, we will eventually have to play the free agent market.

I don't think that's necessarily true. The year after ARod signed his deal (and I think Manny signed his), the market rebounded significantly.

The next year Pujols signed for just 15-16 million, when he was worth much more under the ARod/Manny pricing scheme. Ridiculous pricing on players who don't perform make GM's unhappy. I'm not saying it will happen this year, but it certainly has in the past.

bpe's comment wasn't an anti-gay reference. It was called a joke and I can't see how it could offend anyone. Not sure about the earlier comments; I think they were meant to be posted in another thread.

I said PITCHING was a scarce commodity, not overpaid 3-4 tool players.

If you build sufficiently through the draft, and create a farm system that can produce quality players...you don't need to play the market. Look at what Oakland has done over the years.

When you don't have the players in the minors, then you have to play the market. But Reyes and Wainwright are guys that we have worked to filter into the starting rotation for the last 3 years or so. We've got 2-3 legit pitching prospects down in A and AA.

I don't get overpaying for somebody like Weaver or another similar player, when you can give Reyes the chance he deserves. All signs point to Reyes being a better pitcher in the long run than Weaver, who's always been sort of hot and cold, and teases you with his abilities on to throw it away because of what is in between his ears.

The Cardinals were smart to save their money, and hold out for the guy they want later. So they can take on payroll should the right trade arise to make the team better for the stretch run.

Does anyone know where this is going? I just drove through the area and I have an idea. It could possible be the building just west of the packard lofts. 1227 locust (I think) A 2 story building that was for sale last month but no longer has a for sale sign on it. It is a really cool builidng... anyway it is just my guess.

It's going in just South East of Panama Reds on Locust, i.e. 3/4 of a block East of Pepper Lounge.

The Business Journal reports that "Fifteen on Locust" will be an upscale steak house, lounge and banquet facility set to open this summer with 16,000 sf at 1900 Locust. The development will include 2,300 sf of office space.

Cool!

Speaking of Steakhouses, is the St. Louis Steakhouse (former Ruth's Chris) closed? It's always dark.

With the rumored Shula's going in, with all these steakhouses, we'll be the next Omaha!

I can't picture the specific building right now, but it looks like Edmonds picked a fine location for his new establishment.

What about the nightclub "1227" which basicly started the whole rebirth of Washington Ave?

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of too...

It's a nice play on the fact that his jersey number is 15.

Maybe it's too clever for some???
