Bingo. =D>

The way things are now, a drug offender in Moberly or Sikeston stands a much better chance of "doing time" than someone guilty of burglary and/or a weapons violation in the City of St. Louis. What's wrong with this picture?

Judges need to be held accountable, but in addition, statutes that make these loopholes possible need to be changed if we're ever going to get truly serious about fighting violent crime in St. Louis.

Latest email from the Clayton-Tamm Neighbor association-crime alert

Subject: FW: Crime prevention alert

Ladies and Gentlemen: The weather is starting to cool off and before you know it winter will be upon us. Last year we had a rash of stolen cars in our district due to people warming their cars and leaving them unattended with the engine running and the keys still in the ignition. Please remember not to leave your vehicle unattended while warming it up or leaving the engine running while getting gas, turn the engine off and take the keys with you. Burglaries in our district continue to be a problem however we have had a slight decrease. This decrease is not enough; we still need your help with looking out for your neighbors when they are at work and calling 911 for suspicious people in your neighborhood.

The last three weeks we have interrupted several burglaries in which a stolen dodge caravan was used along with a black Grand AM, and a Black Monte Carlo being driven by Three to four black males one being heavy-set and one with shoulder length dread locks. The other two have short afros. The ages range from 19 to early twenties. If you see anyone in your neighborhood matching these descriptions and acting suspiciously don’t hesitate to call 911. They are knocking on front and rear doors and if no one answers they kick in the door and grab the items of choice they want. We have not been able to get their vehicles stopped due to them driving dangerously during their escape. Again due not hesitate to call 911, if we can catch these individuals before they get to their cars, it would increase our chances of being successful.

Respectfully,

Captain Ronnie Robinson

Commander Dist. 2

I've often thought having a VW with a manual transmission was a good theft deterrent.

It's like the clipless pedals on my road bike. I feel safer knowing many criminals will look at it and say, "What the hell do I do with that?"

A man was stabbed six times outside US Bank @ Tucker & Olive this afternoon. I was driving by, saw the blood, police tape, and listened to a policeman describe the situation while I was waiting at the stoplight.

A bunch of us saw a woman beaten with a 2x4 by a man on the steps of Christ Church across from the library. She didn't want to press charges or talk to the police.

As cynical and jaded as this sounds, it is nice to hear about a non-gun related crime for once. Odd actually!

Is it funny, wierd, sad...not sure how to feel...that the stabbing is a block from where I live, yet I still feel sorta safe and unfortunately feel ambivalent knowing, or probably even more...hoping this is just another incident of bad people doing bad things to other bad people? (I drove by right around the same time and saw two...again..unfortunaltey and presumably homeless sitting on the curb about a block away, looking like they were in some sort of trouble)

Makes sense to me - the likelihood that you will be a victim of crime hasn't changed because of this incident.

Exactly but how did you know I drive a VW?

I will probably always drive a stick- not only are they more fun and you can coast when you are almost out of gas but I figure the kids out stealing cars are probably the type who were never taught to drive a stick.

Ah... so that explains the cop cars I saw when I actually tried to walk outside last night with my kid.

Oh, and I heard about an assault last night on 13th around 10pm between Wash and St. Charles...

PostOct 21, 2009#993

2 women mugged / assaulted on Wash ave. and a resident attacked, mugged, and robbed behind Fashion square this morning.

Put that with the stabbing, the murder, and the other assault this week, sounds pretty busy for our police force. Maybe that's why a lot of people in the dog park are telling me that they can't wait to move out of the city?

How about another "peace rally" Kacie?

^ Wow, What.

Was this in the paper?

What happened to my super security camera system suggestion?

I am going to be packing my taser for now on. Plus since it is cold out... it is easier to carry.

I'm assuming these people you spoke with in the dog park were downtown residents, right? Given the level of investment in the city along with rising population numbers, I was hopeful that the days of "I can't wait to move out of the city!" were long gone, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Yeah, I get the impression that some of our elected officials don't get it. I'm reminded of comments Alderwoman Phyllis Young made in a Post-Dispatch article about the murder of Gina Stallis in the LaSalle Park neighborhood earlier this month. She defended her neighborhood, which is good since LaSalle Park is generally a safe area, but in the process I thought she blithely dismissed the random and brutal murder of Ms. Stallis, which is what got people talking about the area in the first place.

I get frustrated with my neighborhood at times, but I still love city living, and I remain a staunch advocate of city living. Still, like politics, I am getting tired of the fringes on both ends of the argument. You have too many people out there giving the impression that the entire city is a dangerous place, but then, you also have those that are far too willing to sugarcoat the problem and make excuses in an effort to preserve the city's image. I'd prefer to boost the city's image by getting tougher on criminals, but like I said earlier in this thread with my comments about our woefully dysfunctional justice system, that's far easier said than done.

This should probably be a new thread... but I dont have enough time. (Ok, I do, but I am too lazy)

Here are the results of the downtown survey.

Cool stuff.

Of course, one of the most blatant stats were the majority of the respondents were worried about crime.

I wouldn't mock the idea of peace rallies. Building neighborhood "social capital" is important, especially in diverse neighborhoods.

Beyond that...think of why many crimes occur. The perpetrator can expect there to be few eyes on the street in all but a select few locations in the entire city. One thing nearly everyone who visits St. Louis (or sees pictures of it on Skyscraper Page, Skyscraper City, etc.) notes is: where are all the pedestrians?

Because St. Louis's neighborhoods are not quite as dense as they used to be, and beyond that, have no where near as many walkable services, we as a city do need these "programmed" events that get neighbors walking and talking.

It's literally dangerous to mock these efforts.

I don't know whether to be encouraged or discouraged. It looks like a majority of residents rent and don't plan to buy, and a majority who live there now are unsure or do not plan to remain there for 5 years, or as a whole do not plan on living in the city. That whole "you can't live in the city if you have kids" thing is pretty annoying.

Good points Matt. My guess is any criminal would prefer to commit a crime when there are no witnesses.

If there are more organized events: block parties, neighborhood walks, etc. you foster a climate where folks don't barricade themselves in their homes.

I'm all for tougher penalties for those who commit crimes, and I also believe in the 2nd Amendment for responsible gun owners.

But if you think that's all there is to preventing crime and making neighborhoods safe you are really being short sighted in your attempt to play internet tough guy.

^ And that's often the problem - creating a safe neighborhood requires a community and today, seemingly more than ever, a community is difficult to create and maintain. I believe that's why people use the police as scapegoats, as if their job was, is and will always be to prevent all crime. A variation of this attitude leads people to ask for concrete barricades on their street, etc. People want others to do the work and they hope that one action (installing barricades) will solve the problem.
