I saw the sporty black vehicle yesterday pulling into our back alley - it's a black Kia with dark tinted windows. One of the guys looked to be the same guy as before, in the Dodge Caravan.

They didn't see me (this alley only serves 5 homes, we all know each other and the cars that belong to every one).

As the car slowly drove through the alley, they didn't see me. I walked out of my garage, they saw, dropped the car into reverse and quickly took off.

I called the non-emergency police number (231-1212) and they were very helpful. Within minutes police were patrolling the area.

^Did you fire a gun at them! :hell:

Seriously, good job on reporting them. If everyone did that every time they saw something out of ordinary, we'd likely catch these thugs.

No shooting.

But they took off pretty quick. And the police got here quick.

These creeps seem to think that everybody is gone at lunchtime.

When did those 4 guys (mentioned in your post) get arrested?

^8/26/09, mid-day. They were knocking on doors around lunch time. It just so happened that a stay at home mom, answered the door, didn't like the questions, called the police, as suspected, the guys were not legit and got arrested.

^ We've had four different black male teenagers (all of whom we recognize from them hanging out a couple blocks away) knock on our door in the middle of the day, each asking for a different person claiming they were told he/she lived here. My wife called the police this last time and four officers arrived. Two hours later we saw the same person (changing his shirt back to the one he had on when he knocked) hanging out down the street and called the police again. They arrived in no more than two minutes and stopped the kid to talk to him - no word on what transpired then.

Franz Park (Mitchell/Glades intersection) is full of kids and parents after dinner time - 6ish/7ish. The other night 4 kids were under the shelter smoking weed. Unbelievable. If I drove by people smoking on their porch I wouldn't bother, but thats ri-damn-diculous. I called the police and it was probably a 10 minute response time. They were long gone. 2 of them returned but I didn't feel like calling again.

Juice, there are a few on this forum that believe that is perfectly okay. Gives the City that vibe or edge it needs.......see the LK Sullivan party thread....

Hey, don't worry bud, I've already got that covered - the kids were white.

I am sure that the race card will get thrown down at some point too. I am glad that you covered the fact that you were not targeting African American kids.

I think you may have read Jcity's LKS comment wrong. He said that he always kind of appreciated how Saint Louis has a loose New Ortleans vibe...sometimes. Not that he thought drinking and smoking dope in public are good for the city. I thought we were all finished with that thread a long time ago.

^Yes, we did beat that thread to death. I don't think it was just jcity. A few others seemed to defend that action and the gathering. My point was, some probably feel, if that activity is acceptable on LKS, why not Franz Park....I hope that we have come to a consensus, that this behavior is not acceptable in certain places.

By no means do I want to get into this conversation again. However,I had a conversation with another cop friend of mine works secondary at that White Castle on occasion. He said they run the crowds off constantly on LKS. Said there have been shootings, fights, drive-bys, drug dealing, you name it. When the cops tell the crowds to disperse, they have cursed, thrown things and the smart individuals put out there philly blunts. Unfortunately for my friend, the angry crowd takes over the White Castle, where many incidents have occurred. I think the arguements on that subject are over!

Considering that White Castle is literally right next to an outside bar that I love to take out of towners as well as locals, Broadway Oyster Bar, that kind of behavior is TOTALLY unacceptable.

I hope the cops watch that WC like a HAWK!

Oh yeah, I knew exactly what you meant when you said it. I was just saying to you that the kids were white in advance, so nobody will be sticking up for them :)

The Post-Dispatch had a brief story the other day about St. Louis County Police using vacant homes as bait for burglars. I wish that City police would do this - makes sense to me.

I noticed this tidbit burried at the bottom of a murder writeup in the Post today. It seems that there have been 88 murders in the city so far this year, compared to 126 in the same period last year. If accurate, that's a 30% decline. Pretty significant.

^That is especially shocking considering how many more people are unemployed and how bad economy is. Then again, who knows what is going on in the 'gang community' this year versus last. Unfortunately, we still have over 3 months left in the year.

Yes, but those 3 months is when the weather cools off and usually crime decreases.

Does anyone have any good information sources for safety tips, or common sense/street wise behaviors and good practices for city dwellers and especially visitors?

Stuff like, don't leave valuables in a parked car, walk briskly and confidently, carry cash separate from your wallet?

Here's one pretty decent article I could find regarding city safety tips in Milwaukee:

^ Not sure, but you've pretty much hit it. I'd say it's commonsense, but I know for visitors it's not always obvious that they shouldn't leave a backpack on their front seat, etc.

Anyway, I've heard from a few neighborhood associations that crime is generally down, all crimes. This could end up being a very significant story for the city. Of course you'll still have those who just plain think that the city is dangerous and they won't be quiet until there are 0 murders...

Interesting:

Guardian Angels' founder scoping out St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Abdul "Sam" Samara, who runs a grocery in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood, said drive-by shootings and drug activity are rampant in that pocket of north St. Louis. He has been to 15 funerals in seven years.

"That's too many," Samara says. "They're my customers' kids or my customers. One of the boys got raised in this neighborhood, and I'd known him since he was 8 years old. He was killed one block from my store."

With that reality, Samara greets Guardian Angels' founder Curtis Sliwa as the cavalry of sorts. Samara thinks the volunteer crime-prevention group could do wonders if it took root in that St. Louis neighborhood. The Guardian Angels is a New York- based citizens group that seeks to reduce crime by using unarmed residents to patrol their own communities.

"I hear about them and what they did in New York and Chicago," Samara says. "I was waiting for him for years."

I don't know about other neighborhoods, but I know that the increase in crime in the Clayton-Tamm neighborhood has been a big topic at the meetings. In fact we now have a officer on a Vespa patrolling the alleys. He stopped by our business to introduce himself last week. One of our company vans was stolen twice this year. The first time was in May, but was only 3 blocks away, at Turtle Park, it was out of gas almost. They had left a stolen car from the Hill behind where our van was parked next to our building. They then stole another van from Turtle Park. This was all around 7:00 pm, daylight. Then the same van was stolen around Aug. 1, while we were on vacation, that has never been found, and we have since replaced it with a different make. The officers told us Dodge vans are the easiest to steal. This van had vanity plates and our logo on it. Who would of thought! There was an attempted burglary last week on Plateau and they chased them down towards the K-Mart but did not catch them. There have been a lot these burglaries in Dogtown recently. The economy is making people desperate.

Ironically, the guys who have been robbing places in Dogtown had used a Dodge Caravan. We caught them on tape. They tried to hit our alley again in a black Kia.

I saw those pictures on here. It wasn't ours, wrong color, wrong license plates. But the police said they like mini vans due to the room to load people and stuff.. We now have a super deluxe club that they will have to cut the steering wheel in 4 places to remove. then there is not much steering wheel left. As my husband says "life in the city".
