almost every large city in the usa is seeing a homicide spike. Dose any one think crime in American's cities plateaued and crime will stay about the same instead of going down like it been doing for the last 10 years?

I think this is going to be the norm unless gun laws change. I think gun homicides will float around the number we have been at with little dips and surges along the way

Sure it becomes more difficult to continue to drive down homicides as the rates get so low but I also think it is highly misleading to say that almost every large city in the USA has seen a spike in homicides.... for just about every Saint Louis there is a Kansas City and for every Baltimore there is a Boston. Indy, Cincy & Pittsburgh have all seen a drop so far this year (although shootings are up at least in Cincy).

The problem for STL is that we've seen an annual increase in both '13 & '14, which was highly unusual, and it looks like we'll rise again this year. That's very troubling; however, the good news if there is such a thing is that the number of homicides in the city actually were fewer during the past 6 months than they were the prior 6 months and my hope and hunch is that we'll see a further drop for the remainder of the year.

In speaking with a close friend in law enforcement, only a SMALL handful of the murders annually, in St. Louis are random. The overwhelming majority are gang, drug and drug/gang turf related. There have been many drug-runners killed as well. Several of them female. When you encroach on the territory of the other gang, with regards to selling your 'products', you get killed. As we all know, none of this is a shock or anything new. I just wanted to point out the fact that we get a bad wrap, but most of these murders will not involve the average person. These are criminal on criminal homicides, that will only get worse, as the drug trade gets worse. Now, armed robbery, that is a crime that involves many an average citizen, but doesn't typically result in a murder. While crimes stats, especially murder, are up, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the correlation to an uptick in drug and gang activity.

^ I think the ebb and flow of the drug trade definitely has an impact on the homicide rate but I also suspect that there is a rise in homicides just out simply turning to guns to settle petty disputes, such as the guy who shot someone who spilled a beer on him. Just a hunch with everyone having guns these days and more loose tempers.

The other thing I'm curious with gangs/drugs is that there seems to be a much more organized, or at least publicized, gang system in other cities and I often see reports of "Homicide Suspect known member of the xx gang." I don't see gang names mentioned much here; perhaps we have more informal crews rather than old-style gangs but I really don't know.

STL homicide count just dropped by one due to a reclassification to justified homicide.

Crazy story -- robber drops gun which the victim picks up and shoots and kills the robber after the robber shoots with a second gun; accomplice dumps body. Hopefully the biz owner won't be targeted.

The heat index today is about 110 degrees, all sun.

Is that fool up on the billboard still there?

Think I might take a little ride by there on my way home to find out.

PostJul 14, 2015#5508

Okay, so yeah, he's still out there, but not on top of the billboard. He sort of milling around it. And the area looks a mess.

Is it legal to "camp out" on a city lot wherever you feel like it, with or without a permit?

If so, does this offer hope to so many homeless people who'd like to homestead on LRA properties?

^Let me quote you from the thread about Ferguson protesting and what you said when someone disagreed with the way people were protesting. . .

Hypocritical much??

You clearly have some unhealthy obsession with this guy

The four lots on the NE corner of Sarah and Washington are owned by Nathaniel Phillips, not City or LRA.

You're not cataloguing posts, are you?

Creating a mess and camping out wherever you want is fine with you?

For the record, the man on the billboard is occupying the lot on the NE corner.

Comparing protests, the Ferguson protests led to a lot of change. Continuing change. Good change.

The man on the billboard's protest? Not so much.

Oh please. This man's mess is an anthill compared to the mountain of s*** the Ferguson protestors unleashed on unrelated business and property owners. I, for one, am glad someone is upset enough about the daily stream of savage violence in this city to make a statement like this. Take a deep breath. Everything will be fine.

That's the problem. "Making a statement". That's nothing. The man is doing nothing about the problem. He's just making a statement. And a scene. And a mess. It's all about him, right? Attention seeker?

And since the killings in the last 24 hours, his 7 day clock just restarted. How long will this charade continue?

Run, Forest, run!

Forest Gump got a following for his protest. Maybe this chap will too!

Won't include me though.

^ It comes to mind that the sign guys in North City (don't know about this particular one) gladly ran "No Snitches" ads a few years back I think from a criminal defense attorney. I don't know what the ad copy is at this site, but I think I saw a Jesus one on the news; anyway, it would be nice if he put up free messages from groups fighting violence. etc.

Excellent suggestion. Instead the ads on the billboards on that corner are for personal injury attorneys offering inducements to potential customers.

The libertarian in me says that maybe (part of) the answer isn't tighter gun laws but looser drug laws.

CWE "ambush"...

http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crim ... 4204a.html

Is this an attempt to rid the area of cops hurting their illegal activity, a sickening form of protest against the shooting of that teen with a stolen gun or sending a message of another sort to the STLPD??
Either way, these thugs must be apprehended. Lowlifes capable of this, must not be free to roam our streets and murder again.

I can't speak for everyone, but my world-view allows for a reality where police both require reform, and get shot sometimes.

I know, right? What a radical view this is.
