It's what happens when it's perfectly legal for criminals to carry a firearm in your state.

Criminals will still carry firearms even when it is illegal to do so.

True but it should be more difficult to obtain one. Its pretty clear that high rates of poverty and easy access to a firearm are disastrous.

I was witness to a Metrolink incident Wednesday, the details of which seem to be hitting social media a bit recently (at least, I've seen pictures reposted on Twitter and Facebook).

Long story short, a guy got mouthy and was knocked out by another passenger. He then lay there unconscious and bleeding from his head, while some of us told the driver to stop and call police and EMS. The driver didn't do anything and actually yelled at us for trying to hold doors open.

Meanwhile, the guy came to and started fighting again, kicking at windows and prying the doors open while we were moving. Several of us held him for several stops until we arrived at the Shrewsbury terminus. At that point, we found out that the driver had not called for police or EMS. (A passenger wound up making the first 9-1-1 call). After over 30 minutes (45 after the whole thing started), the City decided they didn't have any police available, so County police showed up right after EMS. Volunteer passengers had to supplement the lone security guard at the station who was completely outmatched. The Metro operator did absolutely nothing, not even placing a call for assistance.

^ saw that one... I believe Metrolink's story was the supervisor on board was keeping watch and security was waiting at the end of the line. So are you saying that the guy was knocked out and then there were stop(s) and yet the train kept going?

Someone probably should have called to cops right away, but still, this is ridiculous. I hope the train operator is fired.

Yes, the train kept going through several stops. In fact, the doors opened right into the (then) unconscious passenger. I was right there and did not see anything approaching a supervisor. If there was one on the train, s/he should be fired as well.

Several of us helped at the station. The single security guard at Shrewsbury had not been alerted, and we had to call her over as we dragged the man off. But she was unarmed and really not up to the task of dealing with the situation.

It looks like Baltimore, St. Louis' sister city in many respects, is tearing itself apart.

Hopefully things don't get too bad over there, but the cynic in me says better there then here.

Don't buy the doom and gloom. In Baltimore, as in St. Louis, these protests are happening BECAUSE of changing metro economies. In both St. Louis and Baltimore, new investment and new people are pushing poor blacks away from central areas they've dominated for generations. It's the resentment of being pushed and pulled out of these areas that they have always seen as "theirs" that explains all of this, not police brutality on its own.

^ Can you explain how that explains the Michael Brown protests? And from what I understand as well, West Baltimore, where Freddy Gray was arrested, is not seeing a whole lot of gentrification and is more similar to Carr Square or Saint Louis Place than say a McRee Town.

I heard a drive-by for the first time in my life this weekend. Heard a clip emptied into some kid at a playground while visiting friends in east Nashville. Apparently a couple weeks before a grandmother got hit in the arm when some kids shot up some houses down the street. It's crazy to me that kids do this stuff.

DeRay McKesson, on of my favorites, tweeted out that property damage is not violence because no one got hurt. That right there shows you how little disregard they have for private business. So f-ed up.

I think so. Apparently there have been a number of shootings in that area this month.

Because we are not a "big city" STL fortunately was left out of this list of cities with the most homicides last year....

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... pital.html

With 159 homicides last year, we'd be #8 on the list, in between Baltimore and New Orleans. We're what, the 56th largest city or something now?

How does an offender with a firearm get probation? Or "papers." This doesn't even make sense. Once you decide to use a firearm, aren't you effectively saying you're ready to kill someone that interferes with your crime?

Unacceptable. If we should be protesting anything it should be these judges. This is infuriating.
