This city reduced its high murder rate by 66%.
http://m.motherjones.com/politics/2014/ ... -gun-death

Also saw this on Wikipedia::

In 2007, Richmond opened a program to prevent gun violence, the Office of Neighborhood Safety.[41] The program collects information and analyzes public records to determine "the 50 people in Richmond most likely to shoot someone and to be shot themselves." It then offers selected individuals "a spot in a program that includes a stipend to turn their lives around".[42] "Over an 18-month period, if the men demonstrate better behavior, ONS offers them up to $1,000 a month in cash, plus opportunities to travel beyond Richmond."[43]

The decrease in crime can also be attributed to progressive organizations such as Urban Tilth, which gives youth an opportunity to participate in community agriculture.[citation needed]

^Aside from the legal or moral questions raised by the Chicago tactics, do these kinds of things work at reducing crime, or are they just providing the illusion? If the police do most of this behind closed doors, it's not much of an illusion other than for themselves.

It's been pretty quiet over the last month or so, what do you attribute that to? Weather? Although we had a very cold and violent November. Hot Spot Policing? People killing themselves off? Interested to see what if anything caused the downturn and not forgot how violent the 2nd half of last year was.

January average temp was 33, February was 27, March so far is 30 degrees. February had a bit more precip. At least six of January's murders were robberies of some sort, which is unusually high; personal disputes and no known motive filled out the rest. Read into that what you will.

KMOX is reporting that at least 4 and as many as 25 officers are under investigation for protecting drug dealers.... it all started to come to light when one of the officers was off-duty and got shot in a drive-by. He returned gunfire and one of the drive-by suspected shooters was found later that night dead in the trunk of a burning car. That is hard core Hollywood.

Law enforcement in this metro area is going to take a dramatic turn for the better here in the next 18 months...we are going to find out that some of our violent crime was because certain cops looked the other way. And have you noticed that violent crime has decreased since this news has started to leak out?

How did it "all come to light"? So the cop had his drug dealer friends to murder one of the suspected shooters?

As of this evening, having checked local news sources and whatnot, St. Louis has entered its twelfth day without a murder. March 2010 we went 18 days, 2003 had several long stretches, but 12 days is rare.

So there's that.

Again as I asked previously what is contributing to this trend? We don't go from 1-2 murders per night and multiple shootings to a month and a half trend of calm? Can't blame the weather either as in the past 12 days it's been frigid and beautiful. I'd like to hear some thoughts on what's causing the positive numbers. Is it actually hot spot policing?

^ you really don't know? The wonderful law of unintended consequences of rioting and looting has reared its beautiful head. Also, the bad cops have been outed...Combine these two and we have temporary peace.

The cops took wonderful video of the looting and rioting, they also culled together all the video of every business in Ferguson and South Grand. The rioting and looting was like a magnet for all the trouble makers in STL. With this video, facial recognition technology and lisence plate zapping, the miscreants are being rounded up.

Lenient judges are under pressure in the next round of elections so, viola, all the sudden bail is being increased for these preeks.

Smile everyone!

Eh, compared to most other states Missouri's judicial elections are rather tame. It's basically impossible to not be retained.

From my database, I have this as most recent St. Louis city homicide, although I could have missed one. I usually confirm/update when SLMPD release their monthly data.

@alexiszotos: Police say this shooting happened as a family was leaving OFallon Park, another car opened fire. Sections of West Florissant closed for now.

They were having a BBQ at the park. SLMPD confirmed to news the five-year-old child died.

Sigh.
