I found the PD story they wrote after the judges voted on it. It chronicled how the judges voted.mjbais1489 wrote:quincunx wrote:Before the Nov election I looked up who voted for/against the gun docket and voted accordingly.
Where'd you find this info? I spent maybe 10 minutes googling things, got frustrated and just voted to retain everyone because Im an idiot and the status quo seems pretty easy.
I think faster response and better medical care have played a role in lower homicide rates all over. Same for car crash deathsroger wyoming II wrote:While it may not cut down on shootings, proposals like this for a 10 bed hospital w emergency care and triage services on N. Newstead can be helpful in cutting down on homicides. I believe Boston cites its improvements in emergency care as a significant reason for its homicide reduction. (same number of shootings but fewer deaths).

Ever since watching the documentary The Interruptors, I really feel like St. Louis should give this kind of crime-fighting a chance.

I firmly believe adding hundreds more police officers will not solve our problems. Adding programs that stop violence at the source will. The program uses trusted people in the community to reach out to people they know are looking for revenge or are part of gangs looking to kill certain people. Dialogue can go a long way.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis’ Bosnian community is reeling after the indictment of six Bosnian immigrants, three of them from the city, for allegedly sending money and military supplies to fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, including one from St. Louis.

My friends were just talking about how scary it is that this guy is part of the community building a mosque nearby. A mosque!shimmy wrote:I guess this goes here.

NYT takes a good look at our stubbornly high homicide rate:

A) This is a GREAT article. The reporting is in-depth, fair, well-researched, and balanced. It addresses our challenges from all angles. I encourage everyone on this forum to read it.roger wyoming II wrote:NYT takes a good look at our stubbornly high homicide rate:

B) It pisses me off that it takes the New York Times to come in and write something like this. I like the Post but they should have handled this story long ago. It also brings to the surface what lazy journalism our local news stations are practicing. Their crime reporting is solely based on sensationalism, spinning stats to breed fear, and pandering to the lowest common denominator. I would lay some serious cash down that the majority of reporters working at KMOV don't even know where Wells-Goodfellow is. They will sell-out the city in a second for a point in the ratings.
C) for all the things we believe we can do to help this city to progress, a call to James Clark at Better Family Life to offer our services may be the most effective.
Yes they do. It's "just outside of downtown" or maybe "near (someplace suburban white people frequent)"robertn42 wrote: I would lay some serious cash down that the majority of reporters working at KMOV don't even know where Wells-Goodfellow is.

^^ I kind of get the sense that KMOV especially is freaking out with the rather quiet period we've experienced these last few weeks with homicides. Here is a pretty good Post-Dispatch story btw on homicides and the Ville.

The whole thing kills me. KMOV's Doug Vaughn (who I love) went on a 10min radio rant yesterday morning about how backwards preservationists are. "Always stopping progress in this city". Specifically citing the Cupples Station Complex and how they should have tore it down in the 90's for an A-B built arena. He said all those buildings sit empty today. Then he corrected himself saying that one may have been renovated into a hotel.
What? He's worked 2 blocks away for the last 25 years and covers games at Busch. How can people be this obtuse? Especially sad when it is someone with microphone.
Sigh. Ignorance is bliss in the Stl.

I think Doug Vaugh is great too but his perception of the city, from his house in Sunset Hills, is just ridiculous. I have to chance the station when him, Jim Hays, and Tim starting talking about the city.

The old "See, crime happens in St. Charles too" defense just isn't what it used to be (it never made any sense to point a few County crimes here and there to explain a REAL crime epidemic in the City but whatever). Things are changing - and fast.
Just another small example, one of many over the last two years:
http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crim ... b1119.html
There are hundreds if not thousands of horrendous, cheap apartment complexes all over the West County, South County and St. Charles County that are destined to become perfect shitholes. The owners will flip them to welfare apartments in a heartbeat. It's a disaster waiting to happen all over again.
I love the City and it's only going to get better and better because of this.

Brennan Center study on crime declines; summary is fascinating. Basically it argues that crime dropped since 1990 due to use of CompStat-style data tracking, much higher incarceration during the 1990s, more police in the 1990s, lower unemployment/higher income, and lower alcohol consumption.
I had never considered that part of the overall crime problem in the region might have to do with alcohol abuse. Obviously the drug trade, but alcohol was interesting.

St. Louis. Toughest city in the country when it comes to sentencing and at the same time provide the most resources to people that want to help themselves. Also, I'm all for having cameras all over this city. Ones that take pictures of license plates as cars cruise through downtown as well. Perhaps criminals might think twice about bringing their bs through the heart of the city.
I don't think it will make the City better, but just hurt the region more... And what hurts the region, hurts the City. One of the biggest problems we have is population and economic growth. The county declining is going to make us even less attractive to outsiders.leeharveyawesome wrote:There are hundreds if not thousands of horrendous, cheap apartment complexes all over the West County, South County and St. Charles County that are destined to become perfect shitholes. Right. We need to be competing with the Portlands, Austins and Denvers of the world. Not with each other.terence d wrote:I don't think it will make the City better, but just hurt the region more... ^ I'm still optimistic about our recent period of relative calm. We had a sad domestic incident this morning, but the crazy run of near daily shooting deaths has clearly taken at least a break. I think we've had only two or three non-domestic homicides the past few weeks.
