St.Charles County has about 1050 employees (according to the STLTODAY salary search and st.charles county 2014 budget) for 380,000 people

^ Not saying there isn't any room for staff reductions, but if we use apples to apples we'd see something a bit different with comparison to local government employment.

its not apples to apples but as someone that spent 18 months at City Hall, i can tell you there is plenty of fat to trim.

^ Probably so. But to compare Saint Louis City employment with Saint Charles County employment is silly.

The gentleman that requested the comparison acknowledged that its a different animal but still wanted to see.. :D

^ But your numbers are completely misleading if you don't acknowledge that you have to add all the local municipal employment in Saint Chas. Co. on top of what you cited to get to any kind of imperfect comparison. I throw a flag on "Abuse of Statistics...." 10 yard penalty!

I'm not sure comparisons to other cities would do any good either, but comparisons of St. Louis to similar-sized cities or even cities with similar challenges (like other Rust Belt cities with huge population losses) might be more helpful than comparisons to a suburban county with a similar number of people but vastly different demographics, geography, etc.

That said, I realize the concept of trimming the fat at City Hall to boost public safety is DOA. Ebsy is right- it would be political suicide for anyone who supports it. We are beholden to the Democratic Machine. I just believe that 'machine' is largely responsible for our city's decades-long freefall in population, the loss of many businesses, and our city's diminished national standing, although I realize there were many external factors (societal, public policy, etc.) that led to the decline as well.

We have a homicide report that usually comes out every Monday but not always.... it also isn't as detailed. btw, if you'll notice, KC & STL City had almost identical homicides for the year to date a year ago... but things have gone dramatically different since then. About a 33% drop in KC and 30% rise in the STL for 2014 ytd. Let's hope the past 15 month spike is temporary and we can start to go down again.

Yesterday afternoon there also was a road rage shooting that started in Olivette and ending in UC at Delmar & 170.

Yes, st Charles and St. Louis city are obviously very different, but clearly some fat can be trimmed. I don't want people to lose their jobs but over 5,000 employees for 318,000 people seems excessive. I know Slay trimmed some departments several years ago, perhaps even longer now. We need more cameras all over downtown, similar to London so we can get these clowns causing problems locked up. Perhaps it would even deter criminals from bringing their drive-bys downtown. And perhaps some money can even go into sprucing up city hall itself. It's pretty rough when you walk in there.

Agreed.

Even if I can admit real reform is probably DOA (Because Democratic Machine!), that doesn't mean it shouldn't happen.

Adkins with @SLMPD says young man who was shot jumped at officer from behind a bush. A struggle ensued, then shots exchanged.

But there is also this...

No kidding. As I watch Dave Letterman in my failing efforts to get to sleep, KMOV breaks in with word that things escalated quickly, shots were fired, and KMOV's crews had to relocate to the intersection of Shaw Boulevard and Tower Grove Avenue.

Indeed...here we go again...

ETA: Police managed to calm the crowd and many people left the area. A press conference is minutes away @ SLMPD HQ.

I live on the other side of the park but took a stroll today thru Shaw.... noticed a small handmade sign in a residential window that read "Pray for Peace in Saint Louis."

Shots fired very close to where I was standing; dove behind tree to take cover; then ran from scene at Klemm&Shaw -- worse than #Ferguson

Im so sick & tired of all these shootings gun violence & all varieties of violence ....

Im so sick of people blaming the police for their problems ... The police job is to protect & serve & if you bolt on a cop or shoot at a cop you are begging to reap what you sow..

Antonio French says these police involved shootings happen to often in our city what he fails to say that parents aren't being held responsible for their irresponsible kids being out in the streets committing crimes..

That most crimes in the city are black on black crimes.
Protest or not i just think the protesting alone has gotten absurd hasn't done anything but spark more anguish among people

These protesters haven't done anything but cause commotion throughout the region...
If you want to protest how about protest for peace & try respecting the police for crying out loud...
These thugs that go around doing there dirty business throughout the city get everything they deserve & i show no remorse in any choice words ...

Im done no more excuse's for these people
