I thought it was ridiculous that all the networks had wall to wall coverage of Robin Williams' suicide, but only dedicated 5 minutes to an actual protest/riot in the United States. The national media seems to use the deaths of celebrities like Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman to fill up time so they don't have to do actual reporting.

Powerful comments from Rev. Sharpton and Michael, Sr.
I agree. I did not notice any "race baiting." Though I suspect some people would see anything he said at all as race baiting.roger wyoming II wrote:Powerful comments from Rev. Sharpton and Michael, Sr.

what was Shane Cohn and Lewis Reed doing on the steps with Al?
side note, Al Sharpton is only 59!?!?!?
i thought he was a bit north of 70

When I heard they were holding the Sharpton press conference on the stops of the Old Courthouse in the city of St. Louis, I figured the location only made sense as a great backdrop for the cameras and more attention for Sharpton.
But I was impressed. Rev. Sharpton said all of the right things. He wasn't loud (for the sake of being loud), he wasn't race baiting, he wasn't bringing attention to himself. He was calm and genuine and asking for the right things in the right order.
I think there's a reason why Sharpton has the reputation he does, but nonetheless this has changed my view of him.
Everyone involved in this press conference even beyond Sharpton was well-spoken and on point. More of this, please.

Antonio French is definitely looking to make a name for himself. I wouldn't say he's inciting violence or anything, but it does seem odd that he's been in full reporter mode and zero elected official/leader mode. Still, maybe one of the jobs of a politician in this information-obsessed age is to be on the front lines of a situation and actively document what's happening. If nothing else it's gained him a ton of new Twitter followers.

Alderman Antonio French is doing an excellent job. I had been invited to be a contributor to his PubDef publication years ago.
He is literally on-the-ground-reporting more-so than any other media outlet from what I can tell thus far. He is risking himself to get images that other media haven't.
What Alderman French is doing in Ferguson - and now downtown Clayton - is ultimately going help St. Louis City - and the metro region as a whole.
Keep up the good work, Alderman.

You should follow these people more often. There are many more like them across the United States. They are on Twitter.jstriebel wrote:Everyone involved in this press conference even beyond Sharpton was well-spoken and on point. More of this, please.
Al Sharpton hasn't been "loud" or self-aggrandizing in years. It's the right-wing media and blogs that continue to portray him as such.jstriebel wrote:But I was impressed. Rev. Check out his show on MSNBC, Politics Nation. It, along with Rachel Maddow, represent the best block of political shows on cable during the weekday.

Anonymous threatens St.Louis County PD Chief if he doesn't publish the name of the officer involved within an hour or they will publish info on his daughter...
They have also posted a photo of his son what they say is in his house with a Confederate flag....
Now that's just stupid.
The decision to withhold the name is unconscionable and frankly baffling, but releasing info on someone totally uninvolved will solve nothing. Strikes me as nothing more than vigilante bullying.
The stars-and-bars image, if true, is troubling, though...

Death of a celebrity > trouble in flyover country. You can get any more "flyover" than St. Louis.Ebsy wrote:I thought it was ridiculous that all the networks had wall to wall coverage of Robin Williams' suicide, but only dedicated 5 minutes to an actual protest/riot in the United States. If that picture is real, and Anonymous continues spreading chaos, things might get a lot worse.
I have to respectfully disagree. A) He is not a reporter nor employed by the county. He is an elected public servant of the city in a leadership role B) He is picking and choosing what he reports based on his own agenda/viewpoint C) He chose not to speak up when 30-40 people looted a store in the city he represents last night. D) It is obtuse to think that he is not using this tragedy as a vehicle for his own benefit.arch city wrote:Alderman Antonio French is doing an excellent job. I have no doubt Alderman French cares about the city and his ward but his public actions especially via social media are often childish and counter-productive. His constant "everything is the mayor's fault" rants are a prime example of this.

Yeah Sharpton has mellowed out quite a bit since his outlandish rhetoric and behavior in the 80s.
Right wing talk radio hacks know that just mentioning his name gets all the dittoheads blood boiling though, so even though he was very reasonable in his comments today they will still lie and say he is inciting violence and he is the "real racist".
Apparently to these right wingers racism against people of color is over and the only racism remaining is against white straight Christians.

One only needs to read the post-dispatch comment section to see that racism is alive and well in the United States.
STL Today comments are the worst, and at this point they're becoming so notorious that I wonder why they don't disable commenting altogether, or at least on certain sensitive articles.
Of course, there's also something to be said for letting people speak freely so their hideous and small-minded opinions can be seen for what they are.

This, and also, the mainstream media exists to keep the American people divided and distracted. Corporate interests, to which our most powerful media outlets are bound, benefit greatly. So I suppose this strategy works well for them.dweebe wrote:Death of a celebrity > trouble in flyover country. Those comment sections drive considerable traffic ($$$) to the website.

The content of comments sections is also remarkably similar from city to city in most cases. I suspect comments might skew differently along the coasts, but when I read comments in Chicago, Cleveland, and Houston, they're all roughly the same.moorlander wrote:wustl_eng wrote:STL Today comments are the worst, and at this point they're becoming so notorious that I wonder why they don't disable commenting altogether, or at least on certain sensitive articles.
